ClassNK Opens Survey Office in Brazil

Japanese classification society ClassNK has opened a new exclusive survey office in Paranagua, Brazil with operations beginning September 1, 2023.The move comes amid increasing number of surveys and audits in the southern Brazil port and the neighboring region as the country continues recent expansion of its port facilities, ClassNK said.ClassNK said it aims to provide more streamlined service in Paranagua, one of Brazil's premier port cities.

ClassNK Opens New Survey Office in Rome

Classification society ClassNK announced it has opened a new exclusive surveyor office in Rome, Italy with operations beginning August 1, 2022.ClassNK said it has opened its newest office, located at the center Italian Peninsula, in response to the recent increase in the number of surveys and audits required in the southern part of Italy and Malta. The new site will provide more efficient service in these areas, ClassNK said.

Classification society ClassNK has opened its new Nantes Office in western France, with operations commencing June 1, 2016.   With survey offices already established in Dunkerque and Marseille, ClassNK’s newest location marks its third exclusive survey office in France.

ClassNK opens Office in Charleston

Leading classification society ClassNK (Chairman and President: Noboru Ueda) has opened a new exclusive survey office in Charleston, USA with operations beginning 1 January 2016. Charleston is a major port city located in South Carolina and home to one of the fastest growing ports in the USA. It has the deepest channels in the southeast region and plans are underway to increase its depth to 52 feet by 2019 to accommodate the ever-increasing size of containerships. Once the project is complete, Charleston will become the deepest harbor on the east coast. The Charleston office joins an expanding network of ClassNK survey offices along the coast including in New York, Norfolk and Miami.

ClassNK Open Survey Office in Novorossiysk

ClassNK opened a new exclusive survey office in Novorossiysk, Russia with operations beginning January 1, 2016. Novorossiysk is a port city in southwest Russia facing the Black Sea. It is the country’s main port on the Black Sea and a leading Russian port for trade with Asia, the Middle East, the Mediterranean region, Africa and South America. The Novorossiysk office joins an existing network of survey offices throughout the region including in Constanta (Romania) and Istanbul (Turkey).

ClassNK Opens New Survey Office in Brunei

Classification society ClassNK has opened a new exclusive survey office in Brunei with operations beginning today.   Brunei is located in Borneo which faces the South China Sea. Together with its neighboring Malaysia, Brunei is a key port on the maritime transportation route due to its location. In addition, it is advanced in oil and natural gas production.   ClassNK has already established survey offices throughout the region including in Sibu, Miri, Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia), and Balikpapan (Indonesia) but through the opening of the Brunei office, the classification society said it aims to provide the Southeast Asian region with even more convenient vessel survey services.   ClassNK said it intends to continue to expand its survey offices.

ClassNK Opens Office in Cadiz

ClassNK has opened a new exclusive survey office in Cadiz, Spain with operations beginning today. Cadiz is a port city located in south-western Spain home to well-established shipyard facilities. The Cadiz Office joins an existing network of five survey offices throughout Spain in Bilbao, Algeciras, Barcelona, Ferrol, and Las Palmas. Through the opening of the Cadiz Office, ClassNK will respond swiftly to its clients in the region and provide shipowners with further improved services.

ClassNK Releases EEDI Verification Software – Free

ClassNK has released its new PrimeShip-GREEN/MinPower software, developed to help shipyards comply with the EEDI requirements of the Amendment to MARPOL Annex VI by calculating minimum propulsion power requirements in compliance with ‘IMO 2013 Interim Guidelines for Determining Minimum Propulsion Power to Maintain the Manoeuvrability of Ships In Adverse Conditions’. To evaluate minimum propulsion power requirement, added resistance in irregular waves should be calculated based on ship’s Lines, and this calculation can be difficult especially at the initial design stage. Consequently ClassNK has  developed this simplified formula to calculate added resistance in waves using only basic information such as main ship specifications…

ClassNK Opens New Office in Casablanca

Classification society ClassNK established a new exclusive survey office in Casablanca, Morocco, which began operation on January 1, 2014. Located on the Atlantic Ocean in northern Africa, Casablanca is Morocco’s largest city and one of North Africa’s largest ports. The new ClassNK Casablanca Office will strengthen ClassNK’s service network in the region, and cover surveys at ports across Morocco, as well as support clients and shipowners in northwestern Africa and the western Mediterranean. The Casablanca Office joins an existing network of 11 offices in the Mediterranean region and is ClassNK’s 6th office on the African Continent. With the establishment of the Casablanca Office, ClassNK now operates a global service network of 129 exclusive survey offices worldwide.

Korean Register Patents World’s First “Smart Fleet” App

The Korean Register – an IACS member classification society – has obtained a patent on its “Smart Fleet” app which was launched earlier this year. This unique and world leading app delivers up-to-the-minute information on vessels, fleets, surveys, audits, port state control and more direct to a smart phone or tablet. Surveyors and others working in the field are now able to access this vital survey and technical information rapidly and without fuss while on the move. Jung Dong-jae, general manager of KR’s information technology team and in charge of developing this application, said: The “Smart Fleet” app is a great tool that is already making efficiency improvements to shipping companies.

Varadkar to Overhaul Safety/Emergency Response Services

ClassNK Signs Agreement with Myanmar Govt.

ClassNK announced that it has signed an agreement with the Government of Myanmar granting ClassNK authorization to carry out statutory surveys on its behalf. The signing ceremony took place in the Park Royal Hotel in Yangon on April 26, 2013, with Director General of the Department of Marine Administration Mr. Maung Maung Oo signing on behalf of the Government of Myanmar. ClassNK has been carrying out surveys for Myanmar-flagged vessels for various international conventions since receiving Recognized Organization status from the Government of Myanmar in 1986.

ClassNK Chairman and President Noboru Ueda has announced that on 1 October 2012, 3 new overseas survey offices have opened, bringing the total number of ClassNK’s overseas survey offices over the milestone of a 100 locations. With the establishment of 3 new survey offices, ClassNK’s survey network will be ever more extended, allowing a faster dispatching of surveyors that will result in providing a better service to clients. Furthermore, based on clients’ needs and movements of the market, other survey offices are expected to open in the future.

Ballard ABS Asst. Chief Surveyor, Naval Programs

ABS veteran surveyor Robert (Bob) Ballard has been named to the position of Assistant Chief Surveyor (ACS) for Naval Programs, a position created last year by the class society to better coordinate the provisions of the specialty survey services demanded by increased naval activity. Since the introduction of its Rules for Building and Classing Naval Vessels (NVRs) ABS has seen a growing volume of newbuilding activity to ABS class standards by the US Navy. Ballard will oversee the training of ABS survey staff in naval procedures and survey techniques. Ballard has nearly 20 years of survey experience having worked in various port offices in the US and Canada.
