Denmark Says Fatal Fall of Polish Mother, Son from Ferry Was Not an Accident

The deaths of a Polish woman and her 7-year-old son last week following their plunge from a Baltic Sea ferry travelling from Sweden to Poland was not an accident, a preliminary investigation by Danish authorities has found.The case was being investigated as a possible murder, Swedish prosecutors said on Friday.The case had been handed over to the police, the public prosecutor and the Danish Maritime Authority for further investigation. Mother and Son Dead After Plunging from Baltic Sea Ferry

A Polish woman and her 7-year-old son have died after plunging from a Baltic Sea ferry travelling from Sweden to Poland, a Polish police spokesman said on Friday.Swedish authorities said on Thursday the child had fallen off the vessel and that the mother proceeded to jump overboard in an attempted rescue. The two were later winched to a helicopter and taken to a Swedish hospital."Unfortunately, in the morning we received information from the Swedish side that we have to pass on this terrible news to the family, because both the boy and the woman are dead," police spokesman Mariusz Ciarka.Swedish police could not confirm that the mother and child had died.

Petty Officer Third Class Travis Obendorf died in a Seattle hospital Dec. 18 as a result of injuries he sustained during search and rescue operations near Amak Island, Alaska, Nov. 11, while serving aboard Coast Guard Cutter Waesche. Obendorf’s family was by his side when he passed away in Swedish Hospital following surgery. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Petty Officer Obendorf's family and his shipmates aboard Coast Guard Cutter Waesche during this difficult time,” said Vice Adm. Paul Zukunft, commander, U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Area.

Obituary: Michael Jean Markey

Michael Jean Markey died peacefully at Swedish Hospital on March 2, 2013. Mike was born in Seattle, Wash., in 1932. He graduated from West Seattle High School in June 1950, and he received a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from Stanford University in June 1954. In 1958, Mike joined his father, William C. Markey, at the family firm, Markey Machinery Company, Inc. in Seattle. MMCo was founded in 1907 by Mike's grandfather, Charles H. Markey. Mike was with the company until his retirement in 1996.
