Chevron Marine Lubricants’ 100BN cylinder oil, Taro Special HT 100 has received approval for its use in another engine range – products made by Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd. (formerly Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd.). Following the completion of a 4,000-hour shipboard testing program on a Wärtsilä 8RT-flex82T engine conducted by Chevron and reviewed by the OEM, as well as and analysis of the engine and samples of the lubricating oil, Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd has now issued a full No Objection Letter (NOL) covering the use of the lubricant, Chevron announced today. The approval allows the use of Taro Special HT 100 oil in Wärtsilä RTA, RT-flex and W-X engines as well as in Sulzer two-stroke engines operating on fuels with sulphur contents in the range of 2 to 3.5 percent on a continuous basis.

Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd inform that it has signed a licence agreement for the manufacture and sales of Wärtsilä 2-stroke marine engines by China-based Jangsu Antai Power Machinery Co. Ltd. (JAD) which is the former large horse-power division of Wuxi Diesel Engine Plant). Under the terms of this agreement, JAD will be able to manufacture and sell the entire portfolio of Wärtsilä 2-stroke engines. Initially, JAD will focus on small and mid-sized engines up to and including the Wärtsilä X-72 bore engines. It is expected that the manufacturing capacity of JAD will make a significant contribution to the delivery of Wärtsilä low-speed marine engines to the large and still growing Chinese shipbuilding industry.

Wärtsilä announced that it will divest its shares in the Qingdao Qiyao Wärtsilä MHI Linshan Marine Diesel Co. Ltd. (QMD), the joint venture company established for manufacturing large low-speed marine diesel engines. Wärtsilä's shares in the joint venture will be transferred to the current majority shareholder, Qingdao Qiyao Linshan Power Development Co. Ltd., a company fully owned by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation. The agreement was signed today in Beijing, China. Wärtsilä said the value of the transaction is not significant, and the deal will have a positive effect on Wärtsilä's continuing operations but the impact is not significant. The closing of the transaction is subject to the required regulatory approvals.

Filling a perceived gap in the global calendar of technical gatherings in the power transmission sector, the first Torsional Vibration Symposium will be held from May 21-23, 2014 in Salzburg, Austria. The goal of the Symposium is to stage a unique event for experts involved with the subject matter from all over the world and from any affected branch of industry. The event is organized by the newly formed Vibration Association located in Salzburg and an Advisory Board of international experts.

The event aims to gather industry experts from around the world to discuss current torsional vibration developments, issues and technologies. Wärtsilä Corporation and CSSC Guangzhou Marine Diesel Co.Ltd (GMD), a member of the state-owned China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) Group, have jointly signed a licence agreement for the manufacture and sale of Wärtsilä 2-stroke engines in China. It covers the entire engine portfolio with a power range of between 4,300 and more than 80,000 kW per engine. The signing ceremony took place today in Guangzhou, China and was attended by representatives of both companies, headed by Mrs. Lu Xiaoyan, Vice President of CSSC and Dr. Martin Wernli, President of Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd. With the shipbuilding industry increasingly concentrated in Asia, the local manufacture of Wärtsilä's marine engines is a key element in the company's growth strategy.

Wärtsilä Group's first Environmental Report was ranked the best separate environmental report in 2001 alongside M-Real's report in a competition held in Finland annually to judge the environmental and social responsibility reporting of Finnish companies. The Wärtsilä report is the first report to be published by a Finnish mechanical engineering company. It has been prepared with highly ambitious objectives, adopting the model of the Global Reporting Initiative. The report describes the company's products and their environmental impact. The whole reporting competition, comprising the report, Internet pages and annual report, was won this year by the wholesale and retail chain Kesko Oyj. Wärtsilä Group published its first Environmental Report in June 2001.

ExxonMobil introduced a program to optimize cylinder oil feed rates in low-speed (crosshead) diesel engines. The "Feed Rate Optimization" program is designed to help minimize operating expenses by analyzing scrapedown oil as a way to detect changes in the condition of an engine¹s cylinders. The program, which is designed to help customers find a balance between the cost of cylinder oil and the expense of wear-related cylinder maintenance, analyzes scrapedown oil collected from the engine’s scavenge space, a technique pioneered by ExxonMobil. It is designed to provide comprehensive laboratory testing and analysis of the oil sample, and offers onboard testing tools that enable ship’s engineers to quickly detect substantive changes in cylinder condition.

Wärtsilä and Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) signed a license agreement for the manufacture and sale of Wärtsilä low-speed marine engines in Vietnam. The agreement was signed by Pham Thanh Binh, Chairman & CEO of Vinashin and Mr Martin Wernli, President of Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd. The agreement grants Vinashin the right to manufacture certain types of Wärtsilä modern low-speed engine types between 48 and 82 cm bore size at their works in Vietnam. The first delivery of a Wärtsilä engine is scheduled for the beginning of 2010, with production building up to a targeted annual output of 30 to 40 engines. At the same time Wärtsilä Corporation announced it is expanding its representation in Vietnam by opening a branch office today in Hanoi.

The new agreement enables YMD to deliver also certain types of low-speed engines designed and developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, Japan. Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd is fully owned by Wärtsilä Corporation, Finland, and is Wärtsilä's centre for low-speed marine diesel engines.
