Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT) on Thursday launched the first of three Multi Mission Inshore Patrol Vessels (MMIPV) procured by ARMSCOR for the South African Navy (SAN).The vessels will augment South Africa’s maritime security by enhancing the country’s capability to respond effectively, rapidly and cost-effectively to threats such as illegal trafficking and fishing.The more than 600-ton vessel was transported from the DSCT shipyard on the evening of March 23 to the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) synchrolift at the Victoria & Alfred (V&A) Waterfront Basin.

International oil and gas service specialist HSOG has joined forces with the Chowgule Group, a multi-industrial International conglomerate, to offer a full range of maintenance and modification services to the offshore sector to service the international market. HSOG will now offer services to the world offshore market from the Chowgule Groups newly built Lavgan Dockyard, situated midway between Mumbai and Goa on the west coast of India. The $200m shipyard development has been completed over the last five years, and offers full Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU) and Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) repair capability from a range of sheltered deep-water quays off the Arabian Sea.

At less than 10 years old, Nor Crane is a relatively new name in deck machinery. While short on years, it is long on experience, with an impressive order book, too. Nor Crane is not unlike a number of other Norwegian technology companies in that it has a history strongly rooted in the country’s offshore and fishing fleets, espouses the mandate of quality over costs, and is truly global in its scope and reach. Nor Crane was established in 2004 by Finn M. Nilsen, Managing Director, as an engineering company from pulling and lifting technology for the marine and offshore support industry.

In the more than two years since its founding, Mississippi-based TY Offshore, the former Trinity Offshore, has invested in a new yard in Gulfport and repaired its storm-damaged New Orleans holdings. The company has doubled its capacity and racked up new orders, president and CEO John Dane III said. TY Offshore designs and builds offshore barges, tugs, oilfield-support vessels and spill-response and patrol vessels. The company's new name, adopted in late June, should make business simpler. “We decided to rebrand for two reasons,” Dane said.

The oil industry is one of the primary motivators in current boat building and the Middle East is one of the primary sources of oil. To reflect the central importance of this region Grandweld Shipyard in Dubai, United Arab Emirates is gaining an ever-larger reputation in the construction of vessels to meet the oil industry requirements. Of particular note are their Cummins-powered aluminum crew boats. In 204 and 2005 Arabian Gulf Mechanical & Contracting took deliver from Grandweld of a series of five 30.5-meter crewboats each powered by a pair of Cummins KTA38 M2 engines. In the same time period Inchcape Shippping took delivery of a 33.5-meter crew boat powered by three Cummins KTA38 M2 engines.

In Seward, Alaska, the rain and snow season starts in September and ends roughly seven months later in April. It is understandable, then, when D.J. Whitman of Seward Ship's Drydock and Ship's Chandlery talks about the shipyard's new covered area for its ship repair and conversion facilities, that there is a certain glee in his voice. "Covered ship repair facilities in (northern climate) European shipyards are pretty common, but not so in the U.S.," said Whitman. The company recently completed a yard upgrade with the installation of a 110 ft. high, 220-ft. long coverered facility, an investment that should pay off handsomely as it will allow work to proceed when weather conditions otherwise might shut them down.

Syncrolift Inc., a Rolls-Royce company, has won a contract worth more than $1 million to supply Ocean Marine LLC, a subsidiary of Marine Hydraulics Intl. (MHI), with a Synchrolift® at its new facility, currently being built in Portsmouth, Va. MHI's premiere Synchrolift will lift luxury yachts measuring up to 235 ft. (71.6 m), and weighing up to 1,230 tons for repair and dry storage. With a 210 x 40 ft. platform, the shiplift will be paired with a 100-ton Travel Lift, utilizing eight specially refurbished 240-ton hoists. Scheduled for an April 2000 commission, the project also includes a marina with 130 wet slips and 320 dry boat storage slots.

Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding (ADSB), has granted a major construction contract worth $12.2 million to a joint venture of Arabtec and Overseas AST Co. The contract is the first of two major construction contracts planned in ADSB's ongoing facility expansion. This past August, the company signed a separate contract with Synchrolift for a new shiplift system, which is currently being manufactured. This contract with Arabtec and Overseas AST includes the construction of shiplift piers, dry berths, a new quay wall, two large assembly halls and the basic site infrastructure.
