ABS Awards AiP for SHI Structural Health Monitoring System

Shell to Install Kongsberg's JAWS Software on 45 LNG Carriers

Shell has signed a five-year contract for the installation of Kongsberg's JAWS (Just Add Water System) software on board 45 of the LNG carriers chartered by Shell.These are LNG carriers that already utilize the Kongsberg Maritime K-IMS Information Management System application suite. Australia’s New Antarctic Icebreaker Begins First Voyage

Australia’s new Antarctic icebreaker RSV Nuyina departed Hobart Thursday on its first voyage south.There are 67 expeditioners and crew onboard for the five week voyage to refuel Casey research station and transport helicopters to Davis station.They will also undertake marine science commissioning including tests of the acoustic instruments mounted on the hull and drop keels, and deploying the CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) sampler.The CTD is the workhorse of oceanography research…

Yılport Awaits 2 STS, 6 E-RTG Cranes

Yilport Puerto Bolivar, Ecuador’s first deep-sea terminal, will soon have a new fleet of ship-to-shore (STS) and electrified rubber tired gantry (E-RTG) that set sail from Oita, Japan, on December 30, 2019.Yilport said in a press release that the cranes will arrive on January 27, 2020, and will be part of a fleet comprising 6 STS and 18 ERTG cranes.The cranes forms the first shipment of overall 6 new STS cranes and 18 E-RTG cranes order of the Terminal. Eco Marine Power, ClassNK to Collaborate

Ecochlor Harmonizes USCG and IMO Type Approvals

The provider of ballast water treatment solutions for ship builders Ecochlor announcef the complete harmonization of United States Coast Guard (USCG) Type Approval to their International Maritime Organization (IMO) Type Approval for their line of Ecochlor Ballast Water Treatment Systems.During Ecochlor’s USCG Type Approval amendment process, minor updates and improvements were made to aspects such as documentation, available filter models, and control system software, said a press release from the company.Once the USCG Type Approval amendment was complete, Ecochlor worked with DNV GL as the Recognized Organization for the Norwegian Maritime Authority to harmonize all aspects of the USCG approved system with the existing IMO Type Approval.

Combat Systems Ordered for German K130 Corvettes

ATLAS ELEKTRONIK and Thales Deutschland have jointly been commissioned to deliver the combat system of the German Class K130 Corvette. The order comprises five corvettes as well as the Test and Training Centre (EZ/BUZ) in Wilhelmshaven.With completion scheduled for 2025, the FüWES K130 consortium formed by the two companies and led by ATLAS ELEKTRONIK will deliver the combat system hardware and also adapt and update the existing Combat Management System software of the K130, first batch (ships 1-5).The contracted solution for ships 6-10 is identical to the original contract (2003) for the K130, first batch. In line with the re-build requirement, changes in the solution are only related to obsolescence and compliancy with German regulations.

Fuel Management Tech Helps CalMac Reduce Emissions

Fuel management technology is helping Scottish ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) to meet its targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. VARD Acquires ICD Software

Vard Holdings Limited (VARD) has announced that through its subsidiary Seaonics, it has acquired ICD Software, a leading provider of automation and control system software for the offshore and marine sectors. Established in 2011 and 51% controlled by VARD, Seaonics delivers winches, cranes and handling equipment to the offshore and maritime sector. The company has developed cranes for critical offshore lifting operations up to 250t, and is one of the market leaders for Launch and Recovery Systems (LARS). Prior to the transaction, Seaonics employed 50 employees in Norway and a subsidiary in Poland. ICD Software is specialized in the development of automation software and control systems, and employs 63, half of which in Norway and the remainder in two subsidiaries in Poland and Estonia.

Georgia Ports Enhance Breakbulk Cargo Handling

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has instituted a new tracking system to process breakbulk cargo more quickly, and provide real-time freight tracking for GPA and its customers. "The new system means faster service and better communication with our breakbulk customers," said GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz. The General Cargo System software shows cargo headed to the Port of Savannah and its current stage in transit. This enables GPA to prepare for and expedite handling of shipments, down to the item level.

This multimillion-dollar testing site is capable of performing unprecedented trials on large-scale wind turbines due to the help of HYTORC’s advanced and reliable industrial fasteners, the HYTORC Nut and the HYTORC Washer. The CURI building originally served as a U.S. Navy warehouse used to store nonhazardous materials, and upon completion the facility will become a multimillion-dollar testing site capable of performing unprecedented trials on large-scale wind turbines.

DNV GL Acquires Marine Cybernetics

DNV GL, a ship and offshore classification society and technical risk service providers, has acquired Marine Cybernetics, a company for third-party testing of computer control systems. The acquisition expands DNV GL’s scope of services in the offshore and maritime industries. Marine Cybernetics was established in 2002 as a spin-off from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Based in Trondheim, Norway, the company introduced the concept of Hardware-In-the Loop-Testing (HIL) to the maritime and offshore industries.

Polish officers have earned respect in the engine rooms and on the bridges of the international shipping fleet. With more than 4,000 full or part-time students and about 600 graduates per year the AkademiaMorska in Szczecin, Poland, is assuring the continuity of this reputation. In addition to Polish students, the Maritime University is serving international members of the maritime community with a number of English language programs. They also offer specialized courses tailored to the specific needs of individual shipping companies.
