Sanmar, CAT Work on Innovative Hybrid Tug

Turkey’s leading tug builder Sanmar Shipyards was selected by Caterpillar Marine to build the first tug to incorporate its hydraulic hybrid propulsion system. Construction is currently under way with delivery scheduled for October 2019. Furthermore the two companies, from different continents, are joining together to present their collaborative efforts at the Tugnology 19 Conference and Exhibition, scheduled to be held in Liverpool, England, May 14-15, 2019.Tugs represent some of the more power dense and cost competitive vessels…

Landay Joins Gibbs & Cox Board of Directors

Naval architecture and marine engineering firm Gibbs & Cox, Inc. said that William E. "Bill" Landay III, President of W.E. LANDAY Consulting LLC, has been elected to its Board of Directors effective June 20, 2017. "[VADM Landay’s] expertise in the areas of foreign military sales, DoD acquisition, and science and technology programs will be a tremendous addition to the future growth of Gibbs & Cox," said President and Chief Executive Chris Deegan. Vice Admiral Landay retired in 2013 after more than 35 years of Naval service. His final assignment was as Director of the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) where he was in charge of the $400 billion DoD program responsible for the sale of equipment, defense technologies, training and other services to foreign governments.

Finnish Minelayer Undergoes Midlife Refit

Minelayer vessel Pansio has been fully refitted and handed over to the Finnish Navy, following a midlife upgrade carried out by ATLAS ELEKTRONIK Finland Oy (AEFI ) together with Uki Workboat Oy (Uudenkaupungin Työvene Oy) as a subcontractor. Pansio is the first of three Pansio-class minelayers, including Porkkala and Pyhäranta, to undergo refit which aims to extend the use of the ships well into the 2030s. The machinery, satellite communications and light weapons systems required for the minelayers were purchased from abroad since there is no Finnish manufacturer.

IBAIZABAL TANKERS Opts for SeaCURE BWTS

Spanish IBAIZABAL TANKERS has purchased two SeaCURE ballast water management systems (BWMS) from Evoqua Water Technologies to help ensure compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) ballast water regulations coming into force in 2017. The systems will be installed on two IBAIZABAL TANKERS Suezmax vessels – the Montestena and the Montesperanza – with preparation work due to be completed at the end of October 2016. The project will see Evoqua provide the full suite of its offerings to IBAIZABAL, including design capability, equipment and maintenance services.

Landay Named SAFE Boats’ Board Director

SAFE Boats International announced that Retired Vice Admiral William E. “Bill” Landay III has been appointed as a Director of the Board at SAFE Boats International. Vice Admiral Landay retired in 2013 after more than 35 years of naval service. His final assignment was as Director of the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) from August 2010 until September 2013. DSCA oversees the U.S. Government's Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program and is responsible for the sale of arms, defense technologies, training and other services to foreign governments.

Wärtsilä Hybrid Scrubbers for 3 Box Ships

Wärtsilä has received an order for Hybrid Scrubber Systems to clean the exhaust emissions from three 2,500 TEU container vessels. The installation has been ordered by a major European owner and operator and will be carried out at the Jinhai Heavy Industry Co., Ltd in China. The contract was signed in March 2015 and the systems are scheduled for delivery in December 2015. The scrubber system, which comprises two scrubber units, will be installed to clean the exhaust from both the main and auxiliary engines. This arrangement enables great flexibility and cost savings when operating at different operational settings. In all, 28 MW of total power output will be handled by the Wärtsilä system. The system is designed to clean the sulphur oxide (SOx) and particulates from the exhaust gas.

SCHOTTEL Launches New Service Divisions

SCHOTTEL announced the creation of two new service divisions, Automation and Systems Engineering as well as Repair International. Stefan Buch was appointed director of the division Automation und Systems Technology. The electrical engineer has been working in leading positions in the SCHOTTEL area of software development, engineering and switchboard engineering since 2001. Buch’s aim is to respond quicker to customer demands with short ways of communication with cross linked competences between the areas service and engineering under one roof.

General Dynamics to Club Information Systems & Technology

General Dynamics announced today that, following a comprehensive review of the structure of its Information Systems and Technology business group, General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems and General Dynamics C4 Systems will be combined to create a new business unit, General Dynamics Mission Systems. David K. Heebner, executive vice president of the Information Systems and Technology group for General Dynamics, said, "This restructuring will make us more efficient, cost-effective and responsive to our customers. Chris Marzilli, current president of General Dynamics C4 Systems, will lead the combined organization. The company's headquarters will be in Fairfax, Va. The restructuring will be effective January 2015.

Alion Is Awardee of DoD IACs' $ 3 bln Contract

Ensuring that the US military is supported by the most advanced, effective technologies and tools is critical to the nation’s defense. To meet this need, Alion Science and Technology, a global engineering, technology and operational solutions company, was awarded a contract valued at up to $3 billion to compete for work supporting essential technical solutions by the Department of Defense Information Analysis Centers (DoD IACs). Under the contract, Alion will compete for technical tasks that include research & development, test & evaluation and advisory services. The Defense Systems Technical Area Task Multiple Award Contract (DS TAT MAC) replaces six Information Analysis Center (IAC) contracts. The IACs were designed as central sources for specific technical knowledge and expertise.

PaR Marine Debuts Fireproof Bulkhead Paneling

Marine Systems Technology Ltd. (MST), which is part of the PaR Marine division, has developed and successfully qualified a fireproof paneling system for A60 marine applications. According to the manufacturer, the COMFIRE A60 Bulkhead Paneling System is noncombustible, lightweight, completely stable in a wet environment, structurally robust, and has excellent sound dampening properties, making it ideal for the cruise ship/commercial marine market for which it was developed. It is also well-suited for offshore oil and gas top-side living quarter applications. The NATO Center for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), the Science and Technology Organization (STO) executive body in charge of scientific research and technology development in the maritime domain, showcased future solutions to address defense and security needs of the Alliance by using unmanned vehicles connected through the “Internet of Underwater Things.” It took place during the eighth meeting of STO Task Group IST-096 focused on maturity models, scenario definition and prototyping environments in cyber defense.
