Japan 'Industry Day' Highlights Global Defense Partnerships

Earlier this year, a high-level defense event simply dubbed 'Industry Day' was held in Japan, an event aimed at strengthening the supply chain to the Japanese Self-Defense Forces equipment and strengthening Asia-Pacific Security and the Defense Industries.The event was significant in that the Japanese government has signaled its intention to increase defense spending, particularly with heightened tensions in the region from both China and North Korea. WISTA Japan Re-launched

Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) has announced the re-launch of WISTA Japan. "We are delighted to welcome Japan back to our WISTA family. Japan plays an important role in the maritime industry, being the second ship owing nation in the world and we are positive that WISTA Japan will contribute greatly to the aims and mission of WISTA International," said Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou, President of WISTA International. "I am very gland to re-launch WISTA Japan and to be registered as the official member of WISTA International. In the shipping industry in Japan, it is both socially and politically meaningful to create a women's association. ClassNK Reorganizes Management Team

Classification society ClassNK has announced that it will reorganize its Board of Directors as part of a larger corporate reorganization, effective July 1, 2011. As part of the reorganization, ClassNK’s four current Managing Directors -- Shosuke Kakubari, Koichi Fujiwara, Takuya Yoneya, and Yasushi Nakamura -- will be promoted to Executive Vice Presidents and take up positions alongside current Executive Vice Presidents Hiroshige Kitada and Toshitomo Matsui. In addition to the promotion of the four executives, ClassNK will also establish a new second tier of Operating Officers who will oversee the day to day operations of the 110 year old classification society. S. San Fran. Ferry Terminal Construction Begins

Construction on the South San Francisco Ferry Terminal begins at Oyster Point Marina with an official groundbreaking ceremony. At 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 19, 2009 civic leaders will kick-off the start of construction of the $26m ferry terminal. Ferry service is scheduled to launch in 2011. Congresswoman Jackie Speier, along with South San Francisco Mayor Karyl Matsumoto and WETA Board Chair Charlene Haught Johnson will turn over the first spade of dirt commencing the start of construction. The project will provide one hundred seventy (170) construction-related jobs & over twenty new full-time maritime operations and supervisory jobs.

New Ax-Bow to Increase Ships' Efficiency

Considerable effort, particularly following the oil embargo of the 1970s, has been placed on reducing the fuel oil consumption of ships, a task readily handled by a series of improvements in hull shapes, the fitting of energy savings devices, and improvements to the performance of main engines. A group of engineers from the Tsu Research Laboratories — Koichiro Matsumoto, Kazuyoshi Hirota and Kenji Takagishi - however, noted that while performance in still water was gaining, other factors, namely wave resistance was taking its toll. Thus a study was launched to develop new ship shapes in order to reduce the resistance increase due to waves, in order to lower sea margin. NKK Corp.
