Tacoma, Seattle Ports Ink Deals for Navigation Improvement Projects

Pacific Northwest seaports Seattle and Tacoma have signed design agreements with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for a pair of waterway navigation improvement projects.The Seattle Navigation Improvement Project, authorized by Congress in 2018, and the Tacoma Harbor Navigation Improvement Project, authorized in 2022, are part of a comprehensive modernization initiative for The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) gateway that began nearly a decade ago.Containerships navigating in the trans-Pacific trade are increasing in size…

SAFE Boats to Reopen Tacoma Shipyard for Naval Build Program

U.S. shipbuilder SAFE Boats International will reopen its Tacoma, Wash. facility following the award of a $20 million lead contract for the U.S. Navy to start construction of the Mark VI patrol boats headed for the government of Ukraine.The U.S. Navy announced in January it had awarded SAFE Boats a portion of the contract to purchase long-lead material and associated pre-production and planning support with the remaining $80 million award anticipated in June.SAFE Boats’ Tacoma…

Port of Seattle Co-Presidents Reelected for 2015

The Port of Seattle’s co-presidents Stephanie Bowman and Courtney Gregoire have been reelected by the port’s commission for another full-year term. The commission also elected John Creighton to serve as vice president, Tom Albro to serve as commission secretary and Bill Bryant to serve as assistant secretary. “We began 2014 with a focus on critical issues including enhancing the competitiveness of our seaport, finding the right executive leadership for the port and expanding job opportunities in our communities,” said commission co-president Gregoire.

Port Logistics Acquires Pacific Distribution

Acquisition of Seattle-based warehousing and transportation provider adds Northwest Gateway to Port Logistics Group's national footprint. Port Logistics Group , a provider of gateway logistics services, today announced that it has completed the acquisition of Pacific Distribution Services, a regional warehousing and transportation provider serving the ports of Seattle and Tacoma. The acquisition adds 600,000 square feet of multi-client warehouse space and several new national retail clients to Port Logistics Group's U.S. gateway logistics presence. Dale Scott, the former President and Owner of Pacific Distribution Services, will continue to lead his team as the General Manager of the Seattle/Tacoma gateway for Port Logistics Group.

Tacoma Port Workers Sign up for Security Credential

Port workers, longshoremen, truckers and others at the Port of Tacoma, will soon become the first in the region to enroll in the Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program. The program's goal is to ensure that any individual who has unescorted access to secure areas of port facilities and vessels has received a thorough background check and is not a security threat. Thousands of workers are expected to enroll over the coming months at the Port of Tacoma and Port of Seattle which begins enrollment mid-December. Nationwide, more than 1 million workers with unescorted access to secure areas will apply during the rest of 2007 and 2008.

Bottinger Honored as Maritime Elected Official of the Year

Port of Tacoma’s Commissioner, Ted Bottiger, is this year’s Seattle Propeller Club’s Elected Official of the Year Award recipient. The honor, bestowed annually at the Seattle Maritime Festival’s Maritime Luncheon, was presented on May 9 at a luncheon aboard the Royal Caribbean International's Serenade of the Seas. The luncheon was co-sponsored by the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce and the Seattle Propeller Club. Green Mega Ship Makes Call at Port of Tacoma

Port of Tacoma officials joined officials of Evergreen Group and its Hatsu Marine Limited subsidiary to mark the arrival of the new S-type, 7,024-TEU (20-foot equivalent container unit) green mega ship – the second is a series of 10 Evergreen Group S-type vessels – designed with a host of environmental features designed to protect the oceans and harbors the ships call on throughout the world. * The ability to shut down all shipboard generators while in port at terminals equipped with shore-based electricity. With an overall length of 984 ft. (300 meters) and a beam of 140.5 ft. (42.8 meters), Evergreen's new S-type vessels can transport a capacity of 78,200 short tons at a service speed of 25.3 knots.
