Bulk Carrier Rescues Fishermen Off Manila

A bulk carrier picked up four fishermen stranded at sea on June 12 off the coast of Manila, the ship's operated NYK said.The Singapore-flagged CSK Zephyr, owned by Tai Chong Cheang Steamship Co. (Shanghai) Ltd., was sailing from Port Hedland, Australia, to Caofeidian, Tangshan in China, when its crew spotted four fishermen clinging to their boat, which had reportedly capsized in bad weather.The master of the 108,362-gross-ton bulker immediately informed shore management, the Philippine Coast Guard…

MPA to Promote Marine Biodiversity

Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Our Singapore Reefs (OSR) have embarked on a three-year collaboration to promote the importance of Singapore’s marine biodiversity.As part of this partnership, underwater clean-up activities and public outreach events will be organised annually.To kick off the partnership, an underwater clean-up exercise involving 20 volunteer divers, was organised in the waters around Lazarus Island earlier this morning. About 140 pieces of marine debris weighing around 75 kg were retrieved and sorted for proper disposal.The data gathered on the types, sources and location of marine debris collected will be compiled and reported to Project AWARE’s global database under its flagship Dive Against Debris programme…

TCC, USC Join Forces to Cut Emissions

Leading Hong Kong ship-owner Tai Chong Cheang Steamship Co. (TCC) and the University of Southern California’s Viterbi School of Engineering (USC) announced a significant research breakthrough aimed at tackling harmful ship-source emissions today. The research was conducted as part of a research program focused on improving marine diesel combustion efficiency and the reduction of exhaust gases via the application of nanosecond pulsed generation technology. With the support of TCC, researchers at USC Viterbi’s Pulsed Power Research and Combustion and Fuels Research Laboratories have for the past five years focused upon improving combustion efficiency in vessel diesel engines.

Latest Dry Bulker Shipbuilding Orders Worldwide

It has been an active week in the shipbuilding market, especially in the dry bulk sector, according to Clarkson Hellas's 'Weekly S+P report'. Apart from a single Panamax order and declaration of some Capesize options, ordering has been primarily focussed on the smaller Handysize and Supramax sectors. Starting with the Capes and taking its total orderbook at the yard to 12 firm vessels, we understand that Clients of Frontline 2012 have declared four further options for 180,000 DWT bulk carriers at SWS. Delivery of these latest vessels is scheduled towards the end of 2015 and into the first half of 2016. It was also reported that Tai Chong Cheang S.S. has declared an option for the second in a series of 76,500 DWT Panamax bulkers at Imabari’s Marugame facility.

Schat-Harding Strengthens Shanghai Service

High and increasing demand from international shipowners and local shipyards has led lifeboat and davit manufacturer Schat-Harding to invest in a state-of-the-art lifeboat servicing facility in Shanghai, China. Umoe Schat-Harding LSA Service (Shanghai) Co Ltd began work as a company in its own right in December 2009. Located in Pudong Shanghai, with service offices in Guangzhou and Qingdao, it is a development of Schat-Harding's fast growing Chinese servicing network. "We started a service station in China in 2006 in Qingdao, moved to Shanghai in 2007, opened a second office in Guangzhou in 2008 and now we have this superb new facility here," said Andrew Lemmis, managing director.

Daewoo Heavy Gets $110 M For Two Ships

Daewoo Heavy Industries Co. Ltd., a unit of South Korea's Daewoo Group, won $110 million orders to build two ships for Norway and Hong Kong, company officials said. Daewoo Heavy said in a statement that the Wilhelmsen Group of Norway placed an order for a RoRo ship worth $75 million. The Tai Chong Cheang Group of Hong Kong ordered a 173,000 dwt class bulk carrier for $36 million. Each of the contracts with the companies included an optional order to buy further identical ships, officials said. The RoRo carrier will be delivered by February 2001, and the bulk carrier is to be delivered by the end of 2001, Daewoo officials said.

Daewoo Wins Ship Orders

Beleagured Daewoo Heavy Industries won $230 million in ship orders from Companies in Hong Kong and Europe. Daewoo reported earned an order to build a bulk carrier from Hong Kong's Tai Chong Cheang Co. Ltd. and two bulk carriers from Oak Maritime Inc. Norway's Bergesen d.y. Group ASA is reported to have given Daewoo an order for one mineral carrier and Belgium's Bocimar N.V. an order for two bulk carriers. The orders tallied at $120 million. Daewoo said it planned to deliver the ships by June 2002.
