Harvey Gulf Upgrading Liquid Mud Tanks on Five OSVs

First Emissions-free Pusher Tug Elektra Delivered

A first-of-its-kind emissions-free push boat has been christened and delivered in Germany.The unique and innovative vessel, Elektra, was built over the course of nearly 2.5 years at Hermann Barthel GmbH in Derben and features battery-electric propulsion system combined with hydrogen and fuel cell technology, reportedly the world's first for a push boat. Caterpillar to Power Edda Wind's New Vessels

Caterpillar Marine said it has been selected to be the power solutions provider for Edda Wind’s four new commissioning service operation vessels (CSOV) being built at Astilleros Gondán and two new service operation vessels (SOV) to be built at Astilleros Balenciaga shipyards in Spain. The series of vessels six will be delivered in 2022-2024.Of the six confirmed units, the first four in the series have been contracted to work on offshore wind farms under long-term agreements with Ørsted, Vestas and Ocean Breeze.

Østensjø Wins Long-Term Charters for Offshore Wind Vessel Duo

Østensjø Group's offshore wind business Edda Wind has signed long term time charter deals with MHI Vestas and Ocean Breeze Energy respectively for two of the four offshore wind vessels ordered from Spanish yards. The charter agreement with MHI Vestas for a newbuild Service Operation Vessel (SOV) will start in the second quarter of 2022 and has a firm period of 15 years.The charter agreement with Ocean Breeze will start in the first quarter of 2021 and has a firm period of 11 years.

Parker Bestobell Marine Launches Compact Valve

Parker Bestobell Marine has launched a new compact version of its Float Isolation Valve (FLIV). The patented Parker Bestobell Marine FLIV is installed on top of the cargo tanks of LNG carriers and isolates the gauge and float from the cargo tank. These essential valves prevent boil-off gas from the cargo tanks, which could potentially be extremely dangerous. Parker Bestobell Marine’s original FLIV valve is available in 300mm and 200mm diameters. The first FLIV was supplied to an LNG carrier in 2007 and since then has been fitted to over 120 LNG carriers, making it the preferred choice for the majority of ships built since then. FLIV…

CargoFlexX Bags US Order for 6 Bulk Handling Systems

Netherlands-based cargo handling innovator CargoFlexX BV has secured a contract to deliver six dry bulk handling systems to the Gulf of Mexico. The dry bulk handling systems will be installed on-board the new SOLAS OSVs under construction for SEACOR Marine LLC’s new building program. The FlexXVac system is an alternative for the up to now often used conventional P-tank dry bulk handling systems, CargoFlexX xplains. As a result of the implementation of the FlexXVac system SEACOR Marine LLC will be able to carry 33% more of dry bulk on-board of the newbuildings, compared to the conventional setup, the manufacturer said. SEACOR Marine LLC will be the first U.S. Offshore Support Vessel operator with the FlexXVac system sailing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Interferry Welcomes IMO Decision on LNG Fuel Tank Placement

Interferry has welcomed a decision at last week’s IMO Maritime Safety Committee meeting (MSC94) setting out rules for the location of fuel tanks on LNG-powered ships, a decision that the trade association said will safeguard further development of the LNG option. Following concerted cross industry coordination, member states agreed a way forward that offers impact protection of the tanks in the event of collision or grounding while avoiding the potentially prohibitive requirements of proposals previously under discussion. Until now the IMO’s efforts to avoid damage to LNG tanks and the consequent fire hazard have focused on placement of the tanks according to a mix of prescriptive rules and sophisticated calculation models…

Over the past couple of decades, natural gas (NG) has become a fuel of choice for power generation. One way of increasing the availability of NG is through the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Global LNG trade is expected to grow by 30% in the coming few years. In connection to LNG production growth, receiving and re-gasification capacity must grow as well. A substantial part of this growth will come from the development of small-mid scale LNG receiving and re-gas terminals.

Gas Ships: Large LNG Carriers ABS Addresses Tech Concerns

As the LNG trade significantly increase over the next decade, transporting the fuel in ever larger, more sophisticated ships means particular attention must be paid to technical issues to ensure the present and long-term viability of the new generation of larger LNG carriers. Operators continue driving the demand for larger LNG ships to take advantage of the economies of scale. "By increasing the size of the standard LNG carrier from about 145,000 to 200,000 cu. m. and even larger, it is estimated that there could be a reduction in transportation costs by as much as 15 percent," said James Gaughan, ABS Senior Consultant, Energy Project Development Group. Another advantage with larger LNG ship designs is a reduction in the amount of cargo boiled off as a percentage of volume.

ABS Provides Approval In Principle To Ocean LNG Tank And Carrier Design

Class society ABS has issued Approval In Principle (AIP) to a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) tank containment system and carrier design developed by Houston-based Ocean LNG Inc. The tank design consists of a cylindrical tank with spherical dished ends. The 180,000m3 carrier design features five of these large 36m diameter and 40m high cylinder tanks each holding a volume of 36,000m3 of LNG. Ocean LNG asserts that the design maximizes the void spaces in the ship’s hull yet still provides full access around the tank for inspections of both the insulation and tank structure.
