Ship Designed to Collect Ocean Plastic and Convert It to Clean Hydrogen

(Image: H2-Industries)

An innovative ship is being designed to collect plastic waste from the worldā€™s oceans and then convert it into clean hydrogen, allowing surplus hydrogen to be shipped back to shore. At least 14 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This type of debrisā€”which is currently the most abundant type of litter in the ocean, making up 80% of all marine debris found from surface waters to deep-sea sedimentsā€”could more than double in oceans and other bodies of water by 2030ā€¦

Wind Powered Containership Concept Launched

(Image: TECHNOLOG services)

Winds of change are sweeping the maritime industry as vessel owners and operators seek ways to reduce vessel emissions. A new containership concept from Detlev Löll and TECHNOLOG joins a raft of new wind-powered cargo vessel designs aimed at reducing, or in some cases, entirely eliminating shipping emissions. The partners have designed a sailing ship that can carry 500 containers across the world's oceans with zero emissions, not only in favorable winds, but also in calm or unfavorable areas.

GTT LNG Tank Ordered for Hapag-Lloyd Retrofit

French LNG containment specialist GTT has been notified by the Chinese shipyard Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding for the design of the LNG Fuel tank as part of the retrofit of Hapag Lloyd MV Sajir container ship.Sajir is an ultra large container vessel with a capacity of 15,000 TEU, being built on behalf of the ship-owner Hapag-Lloyd.The retrofit project of the vessel has been carried out with the Hamburg based ship designer Technolog, the maritime solution provider MAN Energy Solution and its subsidiary MAN Cryo. The design of the project is based on the use of an exoskeleton-type structure which obtained a GASA (General Approval for Ship Application) by DNV-GL in 2017.

ABS Issues AIP for Containerized LNG System

(Photo: ABS)

ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to TECHNOLOG for a liquified natural gas (LNG) fuel gas container system. The portable tank system, which will ultimately come in 20- and 40-foot containers, is designed to be filled at land-based LNG terminals and shipped to vessels via rail, road or cargo ship before being loaded onboard an LNG-fueled vessel. Once connected to the power supply system, it is considered part of the vessel and must comply with the IGF Code. All LNG shipmentsā€¦

DNV GL presents GTT and TECHNOLOG with GASA

The classification society DNV GL presented GTT, together with its partner TECHNOLOG, a General Approval for Ship Application (GASA) statement for the retrofit of very large container vessels (VLCVs) with exoskeleton membrane LNG tanks. LNG membrane tanks will generally offer more efficient space utilisation for cargo storage and as fuel tanks. The exoskeleton concept offered by GTT, and developed in partnership with TECHNOLOG, consists of a structure that can be prebuilt on the dock and then installed as a complete unit in the hull of the vessel. This greatly reduces the construction time of the ship at the yard and eliminates the necessity to go into dry dock.

Reederei NSB Widens Panamax-class Container Vessels

In an unprecedented endeavour, the ship manager Reederei NSB is widening its Panamax-class container vessels. DNV GL, the class in charge, is on board, says a report in DNV GL, Maritime Impact. Too young for scrapping, too old to compete: Roughly 500 Panamax-class container ships are currently less than ten years old, barely half their useful life. But facing overcapacities, low charter rates and ierce competition, the Panamax class is under intense pressure. Compared with state-of-the-art and much more capacious newbuildings, its prospects are dim. This is mainly due to the way these vessels were designed. To pass the old locks of the Panama Canal, they were built with unusual dimensions ā€“ long and thin and with a large amount of ballast water to compensate the poor stability.

LNG Container Ship Design Gets GL Approval

GL Certificate Presentation: Photo credit GL

Germanischer Lloyd presents an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate to TECHNOLOG for the IPP designed STREAM range of 3,000 TEU to 5000TEU ships. The design of the STREAM 4200 LNGā€™s 32.25-metre beam allows passage through the existing Panama Canal locks. A draft of 10.50m to 12.00m means the vessel can operate worldwide, including the Kiel Canal (future dimensions) between the Baltic and North Sea. The entire vessel design concept is focused around saving energy. A single screw is directly driven by a dual-fuel, two-stroke, 22.9 MW engine developed specifically for LNG applications by MAN.
