Zero emission is a nice idea, but who’s going to pay for it? The U.S. EPA is readying big money for zero emission ports. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is working on two high-profile port initiatives that it hopes will move the needle in a big way towards U.S. ports’ zero emissions (ZE) operations and clean air goals. The first initiative started last May when EPA published a request for information and comments that would help the Agency develop Guidance it could use to evaluate funding requests for projects for zero-emission vehicles, port equipment and related infrastructure.

USCG Releases Draft Cyber Guide for Maritime Facilities

James Espino (Photo: Gnostech)

Cyber risk has hit a critical peak within the maritime industry, and the significant impact of the Petya ransomware attack on scores of maritime entities only amplifies it. The attack effectively shut down major ocean carriers, including shipping conglomerate Maersk, and impacted marine terminal operations across the globe. Every maritime company, no matter the size or business function, is a potential target. The industry has seen a recent wave of guidelines and resolutions from maritime regulatory bodies related to maritime security and cyber risk mitigation.

Industry 4.0 on the High Seas

Photo: Siemens

Werner von Siemens’ mission to lay 50,000 nautical miles of transatlantic cables might not have been destined to fail – but at least one business rival tried to make sure that it would. It wasn’t enough to merely execute a risky project that had never been done before. The crew aboard the Faraday, the ship that Siemens and his brothers commissioned, also had to move faster than saboteurs who planted false reports in the press and even broke cables. And it was in this pressure

Monitoring System Takes Guesswork Out of Mooring Mega Vessels

Fenders are primarily designed to withstand the onshore motion of a ship against jetties, wharfs and quaysides by minimizing impact damage and withstanding parallel ship movements.

Mooring of large vessels in the LNG, petrochemical and container sectors is an intricate and critical procedure. The process entails bringing together a moving object with a static object, and with the imminent advent of even larger vessels (liquefied natural gas tankers with a capacity of 200,000 cubic meters and container ships with a capacity of 22,000 TEU*), the forces involved are enormous. For tankers and bulk carriers, mooring frequently takes place alongside jetties at the end of finger piers

Exhaust Gas Emissions – Impact on Cruise Industry

Limits set out by the Marine Environment Protection Committee will reduce the maximum levels of sulphur in marine fuels to 0.1% and will come in to force in 2015. This regulation is a positive step towards improving the environmental reputation of the maritime industry. However it also presents a significant challenge to the cruise industry, which has enjoyed an exceptional rate of growth in recent years. The costs of low-sulphur fuels are set to rise and it remains to be seen what, if any, market-based mechanisms and incentives will be put into place to encourage emission reductions and soften the economic impact on operators. Cruise lines now have three years to come up with a technological solution to the dilemma of regulations which will be expensive to adhere to.

Upgraded Wärtsilä RT-flex68-D Successfully Tested For IMO Tier II Compliance

The first upgraded Wärtsilä RT-flex68-D engine equipped with a Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) turbocharger was successfully tested at Doosan Engine Co Ltd in South Korea. It is fully compliant with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Tier II regulations. The engine has a slimmer outline to better suit installation requirements for container ships. Moreover, the engine provides extended flexibility over a broader load range when equipped with a VTG turbocharger. The tested engine is the first of eight for installation in eight ships for a Chinese owner at a Chinese shipyard. The engine has a contracted maximum continuous power of 21,910 kW at 95 rpm.

AIS: When & Where? Here & Now!

The events of September 11, 2001 will continue to have lingering effects on the world indefinitely. The most visible remnant in the maritime world is the drastically heightened sense of safety and security, as officials in countries around the globe seek to secure their borders from the threat of attack — either direct or covert — via ship. Many of the issues currently on the legislative fast track were already in the works pre-September 11. False crew documentation, enhanced vessel tracking and beefed-up harbor controls were much-discussed topic in previous years. As is the case more often than not, though, a disaster of some proportion is inevitably the impetus in moving from discussion to action.
