Americas Cup Innovation & a Carbon-Free Shipping Future

The Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC) represented by BMW Oracle Racing and the Société Nautique de Genève (SNG), the Americas Cup defending champion, represented by Team Alinghi were entwined in a 2.5-year legal battle over multiple court cases, including hearings in the New York Supreme Court and the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court, prior to the 33rd edition of the race, due to take place in 2010.The parties disagreed about the location, format, and restrictions on boat design, all of which were changed by the courts prior to the race.

Hurtigruten Norway Upgrades Its First Ship to Battery-hybrid Power

Ulstein Debuts Zero-Emission Offshore Ship Design

Ulstein Group unveiled a hydrogen-powered ship design that it claims is market-ready, offering zero-emission marine operations.Recently, DNV GL identified the five most promising alternative fuels for shipping, with hydrogen as the ultimate zero-emission solution. The first complete hydrogen fueled prospect has been put together by Ulstein Design & Solutions BV and Nedstack fuel cell technology BV. The ULSTEIN SX190 Zero Emission DP2 construction support vessel is Ulstein’s first hydrogen powered offshore vessel, featuring a Nedstack fuel cell power system. The DP2 vessel can cater for a large variety of offshore support operations.“The maritime industry needs to align and be ambitious in bringing green solutions forward for a sustainable future.

Forward Ships Receives South Korean Patent

Forward Ships, which enables the adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as the fuel of choice for ships at a global scale, said that its  innovative machinery arrangement received its first official patent right from South Korea, a major shipbuilding nation.The Korean Intellectual Property Office Examiner decided to grant this patent application pursuant to Article 66 of the Korean Patent Act to Arista Shipping S. A.  The Project Forward initiative led by Athens-Based Arista Shipping, demonstrates that with LNG as fuel, an advanced hull design, and highly efficient propulsion machinery, it will be possible to meet the IMO’s target for a 40 percent reduction in carbon intensity by 2030.

Project Forward Initiative Cuts CO2 Emissions

The Project Forward initiative led by Athens-Based Arista Shipping, with Wärtsilä as one of the participants, demonstrates that with LNG as fuel, an advanced hull design, and highly efficient propulsion machinery, it will be possible to meet the IMO’s target for a 40 percent reduction in carbon intensity by 2030.Model tests of the Project’s concept vessel indicate that the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is well below the currently most stringent Phase III level. Rolls-Royce has unveiled a sophisticated situational awareness system that fuses multiple sensors with intelligent software to mitigate against the safety risks navigators face when operating vessels at night, in adverse weather conditions or in congested waterways. Harvey Gulf Acquires Shipbuilding Assets

Harvey Gulf International Marine (HGIM) is launching a new affiliate, Harvey Shipyard Group, to manage its shipbuilding assets, the company announced today. Harvey Shipyard Group is acquiring Gulf Coast Shipyard (Gulfport, Miss.) and Trinity Yachts (New Orleans, La.). HGIM Chairman and CEO Shane J. HGIM said it intends to work with its affiliates to catapult the Gulf Coast Shipyard, which constructed the nation’s first LNG OSVs for the offshore market, in addition to tank and hot oil barges. HGIM alone is investing $350 million to construct its dual-fuel fleet.

Harvey Gulf Breaks Ground with LNG Facility

Australian Navy Launches International Fleet Review Mobile App

Those planning to attend the many activities associated with the International Fleet Review will have an easier time keeping track of what’s on offer with mobile phone application being launched next week by the Royal Australian Navy. The app, slated to officially launch on Monday, September 9, 2013,  has been developed to support the International Fleet Review (IFR) and will have information on the myriad of related events occurring in and around Sydney Harbour from October 3-11, including the IFR Warship Open Days. “The International Fleet Review celebrates the centenary of the first RAN Fleet entry into Sydney, so it’s fitting that we’re commemorating our history, while utilizing the technology available today,” said Director of the IFR, Captain Nick Bramwell.

Crowley Sends ATB to Guantanamo Bay

Crowley Sends First Articulated Tug-Barge to Guantanamo Bay to Deliver Fuel at U.S. Naval Base. Crowley Maritime Corporation’s shipping services to Cuba reached another milestone this past weekend with the first delivery of petroleum products to the U.S. Naval Station in Guantanamo Bay via articulated tug-barge (ATB) tank vessel. Mobilarm to Supply MSLD's to Dutch Navy

Global marine safety equipment provider, Mobilarm Limited announced today that it has secured its first production order for 90 Crewsafe V200 Maritime Survivor Locating Devices (MSLD) from the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNN) for use in submarine escape and rescue. The order forms part of a RNN upgrade of all submarine escape and rescue equipment, including new escape systems, escape suits and emergency locating beacons. The order was secured following successful field trials of the Crewsafe V200 for the United States Naval Sea Systems Command (“NAVSEA”) in June and July 2011. The NAVSEA testing was the final stage of the Foreign Comparative Testing (FCT) contract awarded to Mobilarm in April 2010.

Stena Bulk Orders Another Suezmax Tanker

Stena Bulk, which recently confirmed an order at Samsung Shipyard for six in-house designed Suezmax tankers for delivery in 2011/2012, has now placed further one order of a Suezmax tanker – the seventh in the series. The vessels have been designed by Stena’s own design department in accordance with the most advanced technology available today. The result is dramatically improved energy efficiency, which will, among other things, reduce fuel and bunker consumption by up to 15% compared with most efficient, conventionally designed Suezmax tankers currently in operation.

Marlink Extends Crew Calling Programs

Marlink, a subsidiary of Telenor Satellite Services, announced that it is extending its "Super Quiet Time" and "Inmarsat A to Fleet" maritime communications programs offered via Telenor. Both programs, first offered in early 2003, are designed to make "at sea" satellite communications more affordable and easier for mariners. Marlink is extending its Super Quiet Time program through March 2005, offering customers substantially reduced prices for prepaid voice calls over Inmarsat-B, -M, Mini-M, GAN, Fleet and Swift services. Marlink has significantly increased the SQT calling hours in all ocean regions, including 24-hours-a-day SQT calling on Saturdays and Sundays.

Lockheed Martin Wins $25M Crewboat Contract

Lockheed Martin won a contract valued at more than $25 million to perform detailed design, construction, test and delivery of two Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) crew transport vessels that will provide service to Mexico’s national oil company, PEMEX. The Lockheed Martin design is based on its SLICE Small Waterplane Area hull form. The contract, awarded to Lockheed Martin by Hoteleria y Servicios Petroleros, S. A. de C.V. (HSP), calls for the delivery of two SWATH crew transport vessels that can safely and swiftly transport people and limited cargo from Ciudad del Carmen to the Campeche Basin Oil Field 90 miles offshore. HSP will operate the two Lockheed Martin SWATH crew transport vessels for PEMEX for five years after delivery.
