Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Nihon Shipyard -- a Tokyo-based joint venture for ship design and sales between Imabari Shipbuilding  and Japan Marine United Corporation -- have started joint study for the development of an ocean-going liquified CO2 (LCO2) carrier. Nihon Shipyard is pursuing this project with the aim of completing construction of the vessel from 2027 onwards.Demand for LCO2 carriers is expected to grow in the future as a means to transport large volumes of CO2 safely for CCS (Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage) projects, in which captured CO2 is stably stored underground.

The Port of Prince Rupert, in collaboration with the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), as well as input from the Pacific Pilotage Authority (PPA) and BC Coast Pilots (BCCP), has established another aid to navigation with advanced technology capabilities at the mouth of Prince Rupert’s Fairview Channel. Prince Rupert’s shore-based radar project also progressed toward completion with the arrival of several metric tons of technical equipment last week. Over the past five years the Port of Prince Rupert has invested millions of dollars in capital to assess risk, streamline practices and procedures, and create a marine safety regime rivaling the world’s largest ports.

Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) announced that crude oil and natural gas production has begun at the Jack/St. Malo project in the Lower Tertiary trend, deepwater U.S. Gulf of Mexico. Jack/St. Malo is a key part of Chevron's strong queue of upstream projects and was delivered on time and on budget. The Jack and St. Malo fields are among the largest in the Gulf of Mexico. Drum Cussac and Ambrey Risk have agreed the sale and purchase of Drum Cussac’s maritime transits security division. Drum Cussac’s transits security division provides security consultants in all marine environments to protect commercial shipping from seaborne piracy threats, predominantly in the Lloyds of London High Risk Area (HRA) of the Indian Ocean. Drum Cussac has provided this service to a large number of clients since 2008. Ambrey Risk will integrate Drum Cussac’s maritime transits operations staff and equipment into its existing business.

ABS, a provider of maritime and offshore classification services, appointed Dr. Richard Korpus as Chief Scientist, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). In the Chief Scientist role, Korpus will support the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and the organization through his focus on developing and applying CFD technology. "We see technology as the road forward," said ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki. Leading independent offshore survey company UTEC has announced the appointment of a new Vice President of Measurement Technology at its Houston HQ. Mark Klusza – who holds a Bachelor in Design in Architecture from the University of Florida – brings to the role more than 20 years of experience in the industrial measurement arena. During that time he has owned successful metrology and software companies, and most recently ran the Industrial Measurement and Dimensional Control (IMDC) division for Trimble in the US.

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) and the Tampa Port Authority (TPA) have signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to increase cooperation, such as joint marketing, between the Panama Canal and the Port of Tampa. It will also seek to bolster trade along the “All-Water Route,” the route from Asia to the U.S. Gulf Coast via the Panama Canal. The two entities first signed an MOU in 2005, which was renewed in 2008. Thales North America has announced that Frank T. Lockheed Martin will provide the Arab Republic of Egypt with a fully integrated maritime search and rescue (SAR) system for the Gulf of Suez (GOS) under a $50 million contract signed today in Cairo. The SAR system will complement the Gulf of Suez Vessel Traffic Information Management System (VTIMS) provided by Lockheed Martin under a 1998 contract and provide the Egyptian Ministry of Transport with all the necessary capabilities to manage and respond to any maritime distress in the Gulf of Suez. The SAR contract was signed in the presence of the Prime Minister of Egypt, His Excellency Dr. Atef Ebaid; the Minister of Transportation, His Excellency Dr. Ibrahim El-Demairi; U.S. Ambassador C.

With more than 60 percent of Panama Canal traffic originating from or moving to the East Coast of the United States, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced a move to boost U.S.-Asia trade through a strategic alliance with the Dallas NAFTA Trade Corridor Coalition (DNTCC). The DNTCC is working in collaboration with the U.S. Maritime Administration to pursue the development of an agile port system in southern Dallas County to improve the speed and efficiencies of cargo movement between the Port of Dallas and various domestic and international seaports. The ACP-DNTCC alliance will increase cooperation – such as joint marketing – between these two entities and seek to boost trade along the “All-Water Route,” the route from Asia to the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts via the Panama Canal.

Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN) has signed an agreement with Carnival Cruise Lines to provide complete wireless technology to its entire fleet of eighteen vessels. As a result of the agreement MTN will provide wireless Internet capabilities to Carnival’s entire fleet, in addition to the communications service and Internet connections for Carnival guests and crew that MTN already provides. MTN said that the process of equipping Carnival’s fleet with the new WiFi technology would be completed shortly. With MTN’s wireless remote technology capabilities at sea, guests and crew can connect with the World Wide Web and pursue a complete range of Internet activities, enjoying the convenience of the Internet just as if they were in a land-based hotel.
