Singapore Orders Two More Fire and Rescue Vessels

Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) have yet again selected BMT and Singapore’s homegrown shipbuilder Penguin Shipyard International to design and build the next generation of fire and rescue boats called “MFV-R”. Wärtsilä Adds Gate Rudders to Its Propulsion Lineup

Wärtsilä announced it will include Japanese-designed gate rudders as part of it propulsion offering for newbuild vessels and retrofit.The Finnish-based firm said it signed a license and cooperation agreement with Kuribayashi Steamship Co for future development, sales and servicing of the gate rudders. As an authorized license holder and partner, Wärtsilä intends to fully integrate gate rudders within its propulsion product designs for all vessel classes and focus on global markets outside Japan.

Senior Defense Officials Discuss Polar Priorities

Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Mat Winter met in Finland last week with counterparts from five nations in a first-ever gathering of senior defense officials to coordinate science and technology research in high latitudes. Dubbed the International Cooperative Engagement Program for Polar Research (ICE-PPR), defense officials and scientists from partner nations with Arctic and Antarctic interests, including the United States, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden met in Helsinki to advance collaboration on polar research that could prove pivotal to not only scientific understandings but also U.S. and international naval operations.

ABG Ties Up with GTT for LNG Technology

ABG Shipyard Ltd has tied up with Gaztransport and Technigaz (GTT) of France for the maritime transportation and storage of liquefied natural gas (LNG), reports Livemint. With this pact, ABG has become the third Indian company to secure technology collaboration to build LNG carriers. The Shipyard is preparing for a tender set to be issued by GAIL (India) Ltd for hiring nine new LNG ships that will haul gas from the US from December 2017. “We have signed an agreement with GTT for technology transfer for building LNG ships,” a spokesman for ABG Shipyard said. Coast Guard to Test Oil Spill Technologies in Arctic

The U.S. Coast Guard Research and Development Center (RDC) plans to test and evaluate oil spill detection and recovery technologies in the Arctic Ocean as part of Operation Arctic Shield 2013. A multi-agency team of engineers and scientists led by RDC researchers will conduct a series of demonstrations in September aboard Coast Guard Cutter Healy to test and evaluate capabilities of various unmanned aerial systems (UAS), an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to search for simulated oil spills.
