SENER Wins Engineering Company of the Year

The engineering and technology group SENER has been awarded in The European Energy Awards 2013 as Engineering Company of the Year. The technology group has more than 5,500 professionals across 50 offices globally. SENER received this award for innovative projects such as the Gemasolar solar thermal plant. Located in Seville, Spain, this is the first commercial central tower power plant with molten salt storage system in operation in the world and also the only solar plant capable to produce electricity round the clock.

Unmanned aircraft accomplishes first ever ‘touch-and -go’ aboard aircraft carrier CVN 77. The Navy's X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstrator (UCAS-D) has begun touch-and-go landing operations aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush following on board launching. For UCAS-D, this represents the most significant technology maturation of the program. Ship relative navigation and precision touchdown of the X-47B are critical technology elements for all future Unmanned Carrier Aviation (UCA) aircraft.

Cambridge Consultants Completes Iridium Radio System Trials

Cambridge Consultants completes new trials on Iridium-based global push-to-talk radio system; Successful trials of new components of US Department of Defense Distributed Tactical Communications System. Cambridge Consultants, a technology design and development firm, today announced it successfully completed initial trials with Iridium Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: IRDM) of new key components of the world’s largest push-to-talk (PTT) radio system – the US Department of Defense (DoD) Distributed Tactical Communications System (DTCS). DTCS enables soldiers in isolated areas to communicate without the need for ground infrastructure – and in locations where they often can’t pick up a geostationary satellite’s signal unless they move to higher ground.

Bureau Veritas Guidance, Floating Offshore Wind Turbines

International classification society Bureau Veritas has issued guidelines for the Classification and Certification of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines. The guidelines specify the environmental conditions under which floating offshore wind turbines may serve, the principles of structural design, load cases for the platform and mooring system, stability and the structural division and design criteria for the top structure. The Guidance Note NI 572 covers floating platforms supporting single- or multiple-turbines with horizontal or vertical axes. Maxime Pachot, Offshore Wind Turbine Manager, Bureau Veritas, said, "There is growing demand for offshore wind turbines which can be safely installed in very deep water locations.
