EURONAV has selected Jotun’s Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) for two of its Suezmax vessels. The agreement will see Samsung-built sister ships M/T Cap Guillaume and M/T Cap Philippe receive coatings of Jotun’s advanced SeaQuantum X200 antifouling, alongside full suites of measurement sensors applied to their hulls. The applications, taking place at upcoming dry dockings at Keppel Shipyard in Singapore, will increase vessel efficiency, cut fuel costs and reduce CO2 emissions substantially compared to standard market alternatives.

ABB, a global leader in power and automation technology, has secured an order to deliver total power solutions to Ocean Rig’s two seventh generation new integrated design mobile offshore drilling units (MODU) that is being built by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) at Goeje shipyard in Korea. The contract includes an option to extend the delivery to two additional vessels. ABB’s scope of delivery to the ultra deep water (UDW) drillships includes total power and propulsion solutions for drilling and propulsion, system engineering and project management, calculations, analysis and interface coordination and site management and commissioning service. Solstad Offshore ASA, Rolls Royce Marine, Norled AS and Maersk Line have been shortlisted for the prestigious Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award 2014. The prize recognizes candidates from the shipping industry that have made an outstanding contribution to the environment. The award is presented to the winner by H.M. King Harald at the Norwegian Shipowners’ Annual Conference on March 31. Eitzen Chemical A/S has decided to implement Jotun's Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) on two of their largest chemical carriers. Following a contract signed on May 15, 2013, echosounders from Kongsberg will play a part in the American Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI), for the monitoring of subsea life along both U.S. coasts. OOI is a cable-based array of scientific sensors designed to monitor the marine habitat. Everything from fish and plant life, to chemical, physical and geological changes will be measured. “Given the global climate changes, it is vital for researchers to learn as much as possible about ocean life and any changes that are taking place.

Aker Solutions has entered a frame agreement with Petrobras to provide subsea equipment for the oil company's deepwater pre-salt field developments in Brazil. The contract value is approximately $800 million (USD). The scope of work is for 60 well-sets with vertical subsea trees, subsea control systems, tools and spares within the 2014-2018 period. Petrobras will deploy the 60 well-sets in the pre-salt field developments located 300 kilometres off the São Paulo coast in the Santos Basin. "We are committed to developing the subsea industry in Brazil by growing our Brazilian expertise supported by our international competence network," says Luis Araujo, president and country manager of Aker Solutions in Brazil.

A new position paper from DNV Research and Innovation, gives hope for a future of reduced emissions from shipping. With rising fuel prices and impending environmental regulations, the pressure is on for more efficient and environmentally friendly ships. DNV Research and Innovation has taken a leading role in facilitating the demonstration of safe and reliable fuel cell applications for ships. In the joint industry project, FellowSHIP, a 330 kW fuel cell was successfully installed, and demonstrated smooth operation for more than 7000 hours on board the offshore supply vessel Viking Lady. Fuel cell technology of this magnitude has never before been installed in a merchant vessel, and the project is innovative on a global scale.

With its Volvo Penta’s innovative propulsion system the ships are to reduce fuel consumption by approximately 30% compared to traditional installations. To give the vessel the best overall performance the highly efficient Volvo Penta IPS 1050 complete propulsion system was selected. The system consists of triple Volvo Penta IPS 1050 based on 3 x D13-800 rated at 588 kW each, giving  total propulsion power of 1764 kw. with 3 x IPS 3 fully integrated pod units ( gearbox, exhaust system, rudder and steering machinery).

ITT Corporation, the leading manufacturer of military night vision equipment for the U.S. Armed Forces, has admitted sending classified materials overseas and will pay a $100 million penalty, Assistant Attorney General for the National Security Division Kenneth L. Wainstein and U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia John L. Brownlee announced today, along with the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The corporation will pay a total monetary penalty of $100 million, one of the largest penalties ever paid in a criminal case. Rising Korean aspirations as to market influence and technological standing could alter the established order in an important segment of the engine business. While MAN B&W announced opening contracts for its new L21/31 design as a marine auxiliary, Hyundai Heavy Industries was preparing to roll-out its first-ever, self-originated engine type targeted at a similar power range. The H21/32 signals the emergence of Hyundai, the world's largest producer of marine diesels, as a designer in its own right.
