Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding division is partnering with the Commonwealth of Virginia in support of its major hiring initiative. Gov. Ralph Northam announced that various state agencies and regional community colleges will work with Newport News to augment ongoing efforts to hire as many as 7,000 new shipbuilders over the next five years. Navis, a part of Cargotec Corporation, and provider of operational technologies, today announced that The Port of Virginia successfully went live at Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) on June 20 with the Navis N4 terminal operating system (TOS). The implementation of N4 took place with no major disruptions to NIT’s operations. NIT is a key terminal at The Port of Virginia, a growing, deepwater container port on the U.S. East Coast that is capable of handling the largest vessels afloat.

A recent white paper by marine data analytics software provider ESRG outlines the way forward for operators who embrace the latest in technology. Today, only a minority of vessels are positioned to capture industrial internet benefits. That said; almost every new-build ship will have technology built in to capture these benefits. Substantial fuel savings, reduction in maintenance and repair costs, and greater assurance of environmental compliance are the largest drivers. Early results of a pilot to test 100 percent scanning of U.S.-bound containerized cargo shows both promise and challenges, a top Department of Homeland Security official told lawmakers recently. Stewart Baker, assistant secretary of Homeland Security for policy, indicated there were many challenges to the goal of 100 percent scanning in every port but that the department will pursue that goal aggressively. The Sept. 11 commission recommendation law mandates the scanning of all U.S.-bound cargo containers at foreign ports by July 2012. The law gives the Homeland Security secretary leeway if he finds the available integrated scanning technology, which includes a combination of imaging — such as X-ray — and radiation detection, is not adequate.
