Aurora Botnia - RoPax Ferry + Greentech Proving Ground

Built by Rauma Marine Constructions, in Rauma, Finland, and launched in 2021, the 150-meter-long Aurora Botnia boasts a long list of onboard equipment that help it to earn its “green” designation, a label that is confirmed via a Clean Design notation from classification society DNV. NYK to Install Energy-Saving Technology on LNG-fueled Car Carriers

Seaspan Ferries to Run Its Vessels on Renewable Natural Gas

This week, Seaspan Ferries Corporation became the first Canadian marine company to pilot the use of renewable natural gas (RNG) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced by its roll-on, roll-off liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered marine fleet. MOL Orders Japan's 1st LNG-Fueled Ferries

Japanese shipping giant Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and its subsidiary Ferry Sunflower Limited have unveiled plans to construct Japan’s first two LNG-fueled ferries.Mitsubishi Shipbuilding will receive the order for the newbuild ferries that are designated to serve the Japanese market.Ferry Sunflower will charter the ferries after delivery and launch them on its Osaka-Beppu route from the end of 2022 through the first half of 2023, as replacements for vessels currently in service.The ferries will be equipped with high-performance dual fuel engines  and will provide passengers with comfortable accommodations and reliable schedules. SHI to Build Arctic LNG Ship for Zvezda

Russia's Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex has awarded the contract for the LNG carriers for the Arctic LNG 2 project to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI). Sembcorp Marine, ENGIE Ink Gravifloat Technology Deal

Sembcorp Marine Rigs & Floaters Pte. Ltd., and Paris-based ENGIE have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to cooperate in the development and deployment of Sembcorp Marine’s proprietary Gravifloat technology for LNG-to-Power near-shore terminals, focusing on small LNG power businesses with 10 MW to 300 MW capacities. Gravifloat solutions are steel-based modularised and floatable structures fixed to the seabed at site. As compelling alternatives to existing onshore and floating LNG facilities, these structures are re-floatable and can be redeployed to another location. They combine as such the advantages of floating and land-based solutions while avoiding their respective drawbacks.

Wärtsilä Dual-fuel Engines for Baltic Sea Ferry

A new fast ropax ferry ordered by the Estonia based Tallink Grupp for its Tallinn - Helsinki route, will feature Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines running primarily on liquefied natural gas (LNG). The ship is to be built at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland and is scheduled to be in operation from the beginning of 2017. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in February. By opting for Wärtsilä's dual-fuel (DF) engine technology with LNG used as the main fuel, the ship will comply with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) latest sulphur emissions legislation which came into force in January 2015. The Baltic Sea is designated as a Sulphur Emissions Control Area (SECA).

Onshore LNG Membrane Tanks Approved in Canada

The new Canadian Standard for LNG Production, Storage and Handling now includes and recognizes the membrane tank system as a possible technology for the land storage of LNG in Canada, reported Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT), a designer of membrane containment systems for the maritime transportation and LNG. The membrane containment system technology has been integrated into the newly published Canadian Standard CSA Z276 2015 edition. This request initiated originally from the LNG community to meet the challenges of LNG export projects in remote locations. Recent LNG export developments in British Columbia and other Canadian provinces sought solutions meeting the high standards of the LNG industry, but with advantages in schedule, cost and local work content.

Daewoo Shipbuilding Bags Order for LNG Carrier

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, the world’s second-largest shipbuilder, signed a $100 million contract to build an LNG carrier. It has now signed five deals this year, worth about $1 billion in total. The company declined to reveal the name of its partner. The new order is for a 174,000m³ eco-type LNG carrier which will be equipped with an in-house LNG supply system which offers a 20% reduction on fuel consumption compared to Dual Fuel Diesel Electric (DFDE) engines, as well as reducing the carbon dioxide, sulphur and nitrogen emissions by 30%. The Okpo-based shipbuilder did not reveal the buyer or a delivery date. The latest order cements DSME's status as a leader in the construction of LNG carriers.

GE unveiled today its new GE Marine organization which cumulates several GE businesses and will be led by Tim Schweikert, vice president, GE Marine. The new organization brings together GE’s commercial and technological expertise in the marine sector from gas turbines and diesel engines to motors and generators, variable speed drives and drilling systems to automation and control systems and all the electrical equipment in between. Wartsila Wins LNG Systems Contracts for Four Ships

A series of four LNG carriers being built by the Hudong-Zhongua Shipbuilding yard in China will feature Wärtsilä LNG reliquefaction plants and gas handling systems. The ships are owned by Bermuda based Teekay Corporation, China LNG Shipping (CLNG), CNOOC Energy Technology Co of China, and BW Gas of Norway. The contracts with Wärtsilä were issued by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding and were signed during the fourth quarter. GE’s Power Conversion business has received a new order from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. for electric power and propulsion systems for two LNG carriers.
