Emerson Invests in Frugal Technologies

Automation technology and software company Emerson announced it has invested in Frugal Technologies, a Danish-based company that offers fuel optimization technologies that reduce energy use and emissions in shipping fleets.Frugal’s cloud-based propulsion optimization software uses AI technology to collect data related to dynamic conditions such as weather, cargo load and propulsion and develop optimal engine models for ships. Bosch Rexroth Appoints North and Central America CEO

Bosch Rexroth has appointed Erwin Wieckowski, P.Eng. as the new President and CEO of Bosch Rexroth North and Central America based in Charlotte, NC, effective October 1, 2023.The role has been performed on an interim basis by Reinhard Schaefer in addition to his role as a member of the Divisional Board of Management with responsibility for Manufacturing. AST Forms Joint Venture with Wright Technologies

Intelligent remote communication solutions provider Applied Satellite Technology Ltd (AST) said it has entered into a joint venture with Wright Technologies, a provider of marine electronics services to the South Pacific markets.AST Group Managing Director, Gregory Darling, said the companies will jointly offer remote data applications through new technology and software to improve operational effectiveness.The newly formed company, AST Wrights Ltd, has its headquarters in Wellington, New Zealand, with offices in Auckland and Christchurch.The combined companies bring expertise in remote monitoring and control of fixed and mobile assets, extension of coverage beyond GSM, integration of radio and satellite networks.

DNV GL, Tsakos Join Forces on Cyber Safety

The Tsakos Group of Companies has selected DNV GL to assist in preparing a cybersecurity management system for its fleet and onshore facilities – the first such management system developed by a shipping company in cooperation with DNV GL’s Advisory Services. The Greek shipping organization will implement a comprehensive system of safeguards and procedures to protect their assets from cyber risks. Kongsberg Oil & Gas Technologies Acquires Advali AS

Norway and India based software firm to integrate with Kongsberg Oil & Gas Technologies` Software & Services Division. Kongsberg Oil & Gas Technologies AS (KOGT), a wholly owned company of Kongsberg, has entered into an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares in Advali AS. The acquisition, which is expected to be completed mid-December 2012, will strengthen KOGT's capabilities and efficiency in software development, testing and support. Advali is a provider of software development services to the Nordic region. The company was originally founded in Norway in 1997. In 2003 it established facilities in Bangalore, India, focusing on software development and testing. All 120 employees are now based in Bangalore.

The demand on naval and commercial fleet assets has never been greater than it is today. Owners and operators are looking to reduce their current year capital expenditures as much as possible, which in turn is pushing the currently operating vessels into longer than planned service lives. This industry trend is driving a greater number of complex repairs, overhauls and large service life extension programs. In order to support this effort, the industry has started to turn to 3-D Computer Aided Design (CAD) as a repair and overhaul tool.

ABS is drawing upon the industry experience of Horton Wison Deepwater, a leader in deepwater technology development, to further strengthen its knowledge for the certification of risers and flowlines as a certified verification agent (CVA) for these installations. As part of its overall offshore platform verification program, the US Minerals Management Service (MMS) requires the use of a CVA specifically for riser systems. Risers connected to floating platforms are subject to stringent MMS requirements for design, fabrication and installation.

Economic Sanctions Update: Door Opens to U.S. Business in Libya, Closes on Syria

By Barbara D. Recent changes to U.S. economic sanctions programs have resulted in both new opportunities and new restrictions for offshore service vessel operators. In April, the United States substantially reduced restrictions on trade with Libya. However, these actions were followed in early May by the imposition of a new embargo against Syria. In addition, over the past several months, many additional individuals and entities have been designated as subject to trade sanctions, and the Secretary of Homeland Security has been granted authority to take various measures to prevent the unauthorized entry of vessels into Cuban territorial waters.

Schlumberger, Yukos To Create Field Development Planning Center in Moscow

Schlumberger Oilfield Services and Yukos have agreed on a three-year contract to create a field development planning center in Moscow. Representative reservoir models created at the center will provide the basis for determining the most economical design for field development lowest operating cost and capital expenditure for highest recovery and production rate. Yukos will use the field development plans to produce drilling and workover programs, surface facility designs, environmental impact evaluations, economic evaluations, and secondary recovery plans. The new Yukos center will serve as a key technology hub for the accelerated development of production and provide a training ground for Yukos engineering staff.

Naval Shipyards To Get More User-Friendly Advanced Industrial Management Software

A more user-friendly version of the computer software naval shipyards use to plan and execute availabilities will soon be available to all naval shipyard project teams. On Aug. 12, The Navy Systems Support Group (NSSG) made the Windows NT version of its Advanced Industrial Management (AIM) software available to all shipyards. The four naval shipyards will train and test AIM NT until placing it in production between now and the end of October. Bernie Clark, NAVSEA's Deputy Director for Industrial Operations signed out the official release letter on Aug. 13. The AIM NT software replaces a UNIX-based version in use by the naval shipyards since 1994. The "new and improved" NT version is expected to make data entry and data manipulation easier and faster.
