Birdon Taps Master Boat Builders to Build WCC Superstructure

Birdon America announced it has selected  Coden, Ala. shipbuilder Master Boat Builders to build the superstructures for the U.S. Coast Guard's Waterways Commerce Cutter (WCC) program.In 2022, Birdon was awarded a contract worth up to $1.187 billion to design and build up to 27 new vessels under the WCC program, including 16 River Buoy Tenders (WLR) and 11 Inland Construction Tenders (WLIC). Birdon Announces Subcontracts for Waterways Commerce Cutter Builds

Birdon America, Inc. on Tuesday announced it has awarded the first wave of major subcontracts in support of its $1.187 billion contract to design and build 27 Waterways Commerce Cutters (WCC) for the U.S. Coast Guard. This announcement follows a successful initial Program Management Review (PMR), the first major milestone of the WCC program.The subcontracts range in value from $10 million to $50 million and are firm-fixed price (FFP), indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) for design, development, manufacturing and delivery.

Port of Corpus Christi Obtains Texas Cybersecurity Certification

New Partners in Autonomous Shipping Alliance

Three 'influencers' in the international maritime sector have joined One Sea,  the industry alliance that brings together leading exponents of autonomous ship technology.Global satellite group Inmarsat and NYK Group research subsidiary MTI (Monohakobi Technology Institute) have joined One Sea as full members, while the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to become a One Sea associate member.One Sea members ABB, Kongsberg Maritime and Wärtsilä ran separate autonomous ship trials off the Finnish and Norwegian coasts at the end of 2018.

Five Container Shipping Gaints Form Digital Collaboration

Five container shipping companies - MSC, A.P. Moller – Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, and Ocean Network Express -  intend to create an association with the purpose of paving the way for digitalization, standardization and interoperability in the container shipping industry.IT executives from the shipping groups are currently discussing the creation of common information technology standards which shall be openly available and free of charge for all stakeholders of the wider container shipping industry.“It’s in the customers' and all stakeholders’ best interest, if container shipping companies operate with a common set of information technology standards”, said André Simha, CIO of MSC and spokesperson of the group.“We are striving for less red tape and better transparency.

Mein Schiff 1 & 2 Builds Progressing at Meyer Turku

TUI Cruises and Meyer Turku shipyard have jointly designed the New Mein Schiff 1 & 2 to be an evolution on the successful foundation of Mein Schiff 6. Today the construction of these ships is entering a next stage: The keel laying of New Mein Schiff 1 and the start of production of New Mein Schiff 2 were celebrated by invited guests, Meyer Turku employees, the CEO of TUI Cruises Wybcke Meier and the CEO of Meyer Turku Jan Meyer. At the same time Mein Schiff 6 is being completed for delivery at the outfitting key. New Mein Schiff 1 & 2 will be longer with 315 meters compared to the 295 meters of the previous ships. This lengthening allowed for a substantial redesign giving the ships several new features and interesting spaces for guests to enjoy.

Enseda Shipbuilding & Surviving the Petrobras Crisis

Enseada Shipbuilding was established to build deepwater drillships for Petrobras. DNV Reommends Changes to U.S. Safety Regime

Houston: “A step change can be achieved with respect to prevention and mitigation of major accidents through a performance based safety regime supported by a risk management approach. Empirically, the risk can be reduced by a factor of ten,” says Elisabeth Tørstad, DNV COO in the Americas and Sub-Saharan Africa. Large Shipbuilders Keep Profits Despite Steel Price Hike

An analyst from CITIC Securities Co., Ltd., said that the prices of steel products for shipbuilding would not increase as much as others, thanks to the long term partnership between shipbuilders and steel producers. Baosteel, a flagship in China's iron and steel industry, is a shareholder of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, and the two parties have co-invested in a leading shipbuilding base in China, Gao noted.
