Damen Ramping Up Composites Shipbuilding

The Realization and Demonstration of Advanced Material Solutions for Sustainable and Efficient Ships (RAMSSES) project recently reached a key milestone. On July 18, at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding’s (DSNS) location in Vlissingen-East, the Netherlands, the project’s partners unveiled the recently assembled full scale composite ship’s hull section they have been developing these past three years. This, entitled Custom Made Hull for Offshore Vessel, represents one of 13 demonstrators that make up the RAMSSES project.

India Intros Maritime Technology Center

Indian Ministry of shipping has signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with IIT Kharagpur on Wednesday for setting up a Centre for Inland and Coastal Maritime Technology (CICMT).CICMT will provide technological, vessel design and applied research support for inland waterways and coastal shipping, said a government release.Speaking on the occasion, Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State for Shipping said, “Indigenous technology is the need of the hour for the maritime sector, and we are determined to promote Make- In- India as per the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.”Detailing about the state-of-the-art centre which is being set up the under the flagship Sagarmala Program…

MHI Consolidates 5 In-house R&D Facilities

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) will reorganize its research and development structure. The reorganization initiative calls for the creation of a new Research & Development Center consolidating the five currently existing Research & Development Centers. According to MHI, the move is targeted at shifting to a cross-organizational system based on companywide business units, timed to coincide with the company's transition from its earlier structure of business segments to its current systems of business domains and strategic business units (SBU). By consolidating its research and development operations, MHI anticipates new synergies in technologies and skills, enhanced development of human resources and greater efficiency in work performance and facility utilization, the company said.

While there are just two questions, the ensuing answers from leaders at ABS, BV, ClassNK, DNV GL, LR and RINA are voluminous & enlightening. The stricter environmental regulations and rising fuel costs lead to technology development in design, size, propulsion and operations. This goes well beyond LNG as fuel, and we believe we will see a more diversified mix, with batteries, hybrids, methanol and so on.

Glacier Energy Services Acquires Ross Offshore

International oilfield specialist Glacier Energy Services confirmed the acquisition of Aberdeen-based Ross Offshore in a multi-million pound deal, further extending its onsite specialist technical support offering to the energy industry. The purchase sees Glacier Energy Services establish an offshore division headquarters at Ross Offshore's modern facility at Peterseat Drive in Aberdeen. Following the acquisition, Glacier has a combined turnover of more than £15million, with a global staff of 110 people across its operational hubs in Glasgow…

AMSEC Gets 'Big Win' Navy IT Contract

Huntington Ingalls Industries subsidiary AMSEC LLC wins IT support services contract to support Department of the Navy. "This is truly a big win for AMSEC," said Michael Bernardi, program manager within the AMSEC's logistics, engineering, technology and training solutions group. The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity, firm-fixed-price contract contains a one-year base period with two one-year option periods which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of the contract to approximately $19.6 million.

Seaspan Signs Contract with STX Offshore & Shipbuilding

Seaspan Marine entered into a technology support agreement with STX Offshore and Shipbuilding Company Ltd. This partnership will optimize Vancouver Shipyard’s planned facilities upgrades for the Federal Government’s recently awarded $8 billion Non-Combat National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) program. Tokyo, February 27, 2012 - Effective April 1, 2012, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) will establish two new companies to perform nationwide operations in engineering and control systems businesses, respectively, through integration of its group companies currently handling those businesses regionally in Japan. The two companies, both to be wholly owned by MHI, are: MHI Plant Engineering Co., Ltd. (MHIPEC), dedicated to engineering business, and MHI Control Systems, Co., Ltd. Alion Science and Technology, an employee-owned technology solutions provider, has been awarded a $97m contract to support the Chief of Navy Information Office (CHINFO) with media relations, community outreach, visual information systems, information technology support, Web site portal management and business case analysis development and assessment. CHINFO is responsible for coordinating, planning and implementing public affairs policies and programs, visual information services and community relations efforts for all naval fleet and forces. Under the contract, Alion will support evolving public affairs requirements globally. Pragma, Maersk Oil Agree on $2.8M Deal
