3sun Group, a specialist provider of products and services to the global energy industry, has appointed Andrew Elmes as Renewables Director. This is a new role which has been created to drive forward the company’s strategy for offshore and onshore wind turbine installation, operations and maintenance. Prior to joining 3sun Group, Elmes spent four years as Head of U.K. Projects with Siemens Energy Renewables, where he was responsible for establishing and leading the strategy, organization, profitability and resourcing of U.K. project delivery capabilities.

Siemens Marine Solutions has been commissioned by the Spanish shipyard Navantia S.A. to equip two new multi-functional supply ships with pod propulsion units and power supply equipment. The final customer is the Australian navy which intends to use the two ships to improve the range of its amphibian deployment capabilities. To this end, the ships (LHDs - Landing Helicopter Docks) will be equipped with up to twelve helicopters. Both ships will be built in Ferrol in the north-west of Spain and the final equipment will be installed at the Tenix shipyard in Australia. The order is worth some $67.5m. Siemens is responsible for all the electrical propulsion and power supply equipment for the two ships.

GE Marine announced that it will supply the Spanish shipbuilder, , with two LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines. The LM2500s will power two new Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) amphibious ships. In February 2007, Navantia and ’s Tenix Group announced the two companies will jointly construct the two new LHD vessels. Navantia will oversee the ships’ design and construction, power plants and platform control system. The Tenix Group will handle the construction of the superstructure and the bulk of the fit-out at its facility.

Saab Systems signed a contract worth $87m with Tenix Marine to design and develop the Combat Management System for Australia's new Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) amphibious class of ships. Saab and Tenix have agreed on a contract that will see Saab responsible for design, development and integration of the new ships' Combat Management System. Saab will supply the next generation 9LV Combat Management System based upon open architecture and the naval surveillance radar Sea Giraffe AMB. Special features of the system will include helicopter control, watercraft control and close in self defense against military and asymmetric threats.

Merwede Shipyard won a contract to design, engineer and build one Multi-Role Vessel for Tenix Defence PTY, Ltd..of Australia. The Multi Role Vessel meets or exceeds all operational requirements of the New Zealand Ministry of Defence, including those for cargo and troop carriage, speed, endurance, helicopter operations and the secondary role of Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) patrol and response. The 2,925 dwt vessel will measure 131 x 23 x 5.6 m, and will be able to achieve a maximum speed of 19.6 knots. This Multi-Role Vessel is part of a total of seven vessels that will be supplied by Tenix Defence to the Ministry of Defence of New Zealand. The building period for the Multi-Role Vessel is 22 months.

The go-ahead for six new search and rescue vessels for the Philippine Coast Guard confirms Tenix Defence as Australia’s leading patrol boat constructor, Tenix Group Managing Director Paul Salteri said today. Tenix Defence will build two 56-metre search and rescue vessels and four 35-metre high-speed search and rescue vessels for the Coast Guard, with an option for 10 more 35-metre vessels, under a contract worth up to US$150m. “Tenix Defence built two previous 56-metre vessels for the Philippines at our yard at Henderson in Western Australia, where the new vessels will also be built.” Mr Salteri said. “These vessels were delivered in June 2000 and December 2000, and their success in operational service has led directly to the second order.

Merwede Shipyard has been busy of late, announcing two significant jobs from the military and commercial sectors. On the military side, the company announced a contract for the design, engineering and building of one Multi-Role Vessel, for Tenix Defence of Australia. The vessel will meet or exceed all operational requirements of the New Zealand Ministry of Defense, including those for cargo and troop carriage, speed, endurance, helicopter operations and the secondary role of Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) patrol and response. This MRV is part of a total of seven vessels that will be supplied by Tenix Defence to the Ministry of Defence of New Zealand, and the vessel, built to the rules of Lloyd's Register, will take 22 months to build.

Offshore Systems International Ltd. said its Navigation Systems business has been awarded a CDN$800,000 contract for the Royal New Zealand Navy's Project Protector naval shipbuilding program. Tenix Defence Pty Ltd. is prime contractor for the construction of seven new ships. The contract is to supply and install ECPINS(R) 4000 (Electronic Chart Precise Integrated Navigation System) on all seven new ships.

In a speech published on the website of Australian Prime Minister John Howard, it was announced that Australia will make a multi-billion investment to bolster the Australian Navy. The two contracts, one for $3 billion and one for $8 billion, both specify Navantia (Spain) designed warships. The following is direct quotations from the presentation. "Now it's no secret that the two projects involve first of all two large amphibious ships which will be delivered by Tenix and they will cost approximately $3 billion. They are a Navantia design. They will greatly enhance Australia's ability to send forces in strength when required, particularly in our own region…

A $30 million center to coordinate an Australian air warfare destroyer project will be based in the southern city of Adelaide, creating up to 200 jobs, according to an Advertiser reports. Cabinet decided to base the center near the Outer Harbor base of ASC, the company which secured the $6 billion destroyer contract. The new AWD Systems Center will manage such major aspects of the complex shipbuilding project as design schedule and budgets. The 200 high-end jobs will include systems engineers, project managers and supply chain managers. In May, ASC beat Victorian shipbuilder Tenix for the $6 billion Federal Government contract to build three ships. The State Government is injecting $140 million into a maritime precinct next to ASC. Sea-Tow Limited has won a tender with Bechtel Australia Pty Limited to barge large fabricated modules from Brisbane to Gladstone for the construction of Comalco’s new alumina refinery. The 13-month contract will involve at least 30 voyages consisting of assemblies weighing between 50 and 380 tonnes. The assemblies will be rolled on and off the barge using a heavy lift platform trailer provided and operated by Mammoet. Mr Graham Phillips, from Adsteam Harbour – Brisbane, has been appointed as Sea-Tow’s Project Manager for the contract, bringing many years of marine project experience to the team. He will co-ordinate and oversee all aspects of the project in Brisbane and Gladstone.

The offshore patrol vessels to be built by Tenix Defence Pty Ltd for the New Zealand Navy will be equipped with Wärtsilä propulsion systems. Wärtsilä won contracts for propulsion systems for the seven-vessel Project Protector of the Royal New Zealand Navy. The main contractor for the project is the Australian defense supplier Tenix Defence Pty Ltd, on behalf of the New Zealand Ministry of Defense. The project is for the supply of seven vessels: a 429ft (131m) multi-role vessel (MRV), two 279ft (85m) offshore patrol vessels (OPV) and four 180ft (55m) inshore patrol vessels (IPV). The first will be delivered December 2006. The vessels are intended for military and civilian roles in New Zealand's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), in the South Pacific and the Southern Ocean.
