German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd announced it has signed a binding agreement today under which it will acquire 35% of J M Baxi Ports & Logistics Limited (JMBPL) from a Bain Capital Private Equity affiliate.Additionally, Hapag-Lloyd AG signed a binding agreement with JMBPL and its promoters, the Kotak family, to subscribe to a capital increase by the company and raise Hapag-Lloyd’s shareholding to 40%. The contracting parties agreed to not disclose any financial details of the deal.J M Baxi Ports & Logistics Limited is a private terminal and inland transport service provider in India.

German container liner Hapag-Lloyd on Thursday announced it has completed its acquisition of a minority stake in Italy-based logistics company the Spinelli Group as global shipping firms continue to expand their port presence amid prolonged supply chain disruption.The deal was first announced in September but remained subject to the approval of antitrust authorities.With today’s closing, Hapag-Lloyd has acquired a 49% stake in one of Italy’s leading terminal and transport operators.

Hapag-Lloyd AG and SM SAAM have signed a binding agreement under which Hapag-Lloyd will acquire 100 % of the shares of SAAM Ports S.A. and SAAM Logistics S.A. and thereby the entire company’s terminal business and associated logistics services.The contracting parties agreed upon a price of around $1 billion, which also includes real estate assets related to the logistics business.Chile-based SM SAAM is a terminal operator, logistics company, and towage provider active in multiple countries in the Americas.

German logistics and transportation company Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) and its partners began research and development work on the publicly funded FRESH  project at its Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA).FRESH stands for flexibility management and control reserve provision of heavy goods vehicles in the harbour, said the firm which operates three container terminals at the Port of Hamburg: Altenwerder, Burchardkai and Tollerort, as well as cargo handling and transport services by rail, road and sea.The goal is to integrate the battery capacities of the automated guided container transport vehicles (AGVs) that are in use…

Hapag-Lloyd held a naming ceremony in Hamburg for the Guayaquil Express, the fourth of five newbuildings in its 10,500 TEU class. The patron is Christine Kühne, wife of Klaus-Michael Kühne, majority shareholder and Honorary Chairman of Kühne + Nagel International AG. Among those attending the christening at the Container Terminal Altenwerder in the Port of Hamburg were Olaf Scholz, the Mayor of Hamburg, and Angela Titzrath, the CEO of Hamburg Hafen und Logistik AG. “This naming ceremony is a symbol of the close connection to our home port, which is simultaneously the home port of the Guayaquil Express,” said Michael Behrendt, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Hapag-Lloyd AG. “For us, the Guayaquil Express is a ‘smart ship’,” said Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd.

For the first time a vessel from Turkish ARKAS Line is expected in the Port of Hamburg on April 20. The WANDA A is deployed in the West Africa Express Service (WAX) operated by ARKAS and Hapag-Lloyd and will be cleared at HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder. Since December ARKAS has already been booking slots on Hapag-Lloyd’s WAX service. The demand is running so well that now, with the WANDA A, one of ARKAS’ own ships is being taken into the service. The weekly liner service operates from Hamburg via Algeciras, Dakar, Lagos/Apapa, Tincan Island, Tema, Abidjan and Tangiers, then back via Antwerp to Hamburg. Hapag-Lloyd deploys five 1,700 TEU vessels in the service.

The Port of Hamburg continues record performance handling a total of 72.6 million tons (+ 6.6 percent) in the first six months of 2014. Hamburg’s universal port with 50.7 million tons of predominantly container handling achieves a result of 4.8 million TEU (20-ft standard containers), an increase of 6.8 percent. The largest seaports on the north European continent show an average growth in total handling of 1.8 percent and in container handling of 2.6 percent. The Port of Hamburg can look back on above average growth in container traffic, building up its market share from 25.7 to 26.7 percent.

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) said it needs 50 additional commercial employees for the container terminal Burchardkai (CTB). The company continues its personnel actions started last year with which they respond to the growing peak loads in container handling. Heinz Brandt , Chief Human Resources Officer of HHLA, explained, "Everyone involved in the entire supply chain must adjust to the fact that peak loads in future be even stronger than previously occur regularly. In order to offer our many years of quality continue, we need additional staff. Ten battery-operated heavy goods vehicles now transport containers between ships and the yard at the highly automated handling facility in the HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA). The aim is to charge the batteries of these container transporters when the grid has a surplus of renewable energy generated in northern Germany. The first battery-powered heavy goods vehicles in the world went into use at the HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) back in 2011. Now, a project is bringing together businesses and research institutions that are keen to find out how the batteries for these automated guided vehicles (AGVs) can be charged using surplus green power generated in northern Germany.

The Swedish paper and timber products manufacturer Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget (SCA) and its transport and logistics unit SCA Transforest have been operating a regular scheduled liner service called Container Express since March 1 2010, linking northern Sweden and the Port of Hamburg. The vessel Flintercape, with a carrying capacity of 809 TEU, sails from the ports of Sundsvall and Holmsund (Umeå) in northern Sweden to Hamburg every 10 days. The 1Aclass ice-strengthened FLINTERCAPE is 465 ft long and 71 ft wide. The vessel had not been in service since it was delivered to the Dutch Flinter Group. With a deadweight tonnage of 9,500 tons, the Flintercape has a draught of 24.5 ft. The maximum service speed is more than 18 knots.

The Hanover Express, which is capable of carrying 8,750 containers, is one of the world’s largest containerships. The newbuilding was recently named in Hamburg. The patron was Gabriele Frenzel, wife of TUI’s CEO and chairman of the supervisory board of Hapag-Lloyd, Dr. Michael Frenzel. Naming ceremonies for large containerships are still something special even in Hamburg, and nearly 300 guests from business and politics – including the Mayor of Hamburg Ole von Beust and the Mayor of Hanover Bernd Strauch – attended the event at Container Terminal Altenwerder, at the quays of which the Hanover Express had berthed. Hapag-Lloyd’s latest newbuilding was named by Gabriele Frenzel. The new ship sailing under German flag can carry 8,750 standard containers.

In Hamburg, one of the largest training ships in the world, the Chicago Express, has for the first time taken a group of future officers on board – eight nautical officer cadets have reported for duty. The 8,750 TEU container is the second training ship in the Hapag-Lloyd fleet. On August 31, the nautical officer cadets boarded the vessel at Container Terminal Altenwerder. They complete their time at sea (in total one year) towards qualifying to study at a nautical college. On October 19, the ship’s mechanic apprentices, who are learning a skilled trade, will follow. In total, alongside the crew, there will be 15 apprentices on board, aged between 18 and 22, coming from the whole of Germany, plus two training officers.
