Cargotec division Navis has signed an agreement to acquire the assets of New Zealand-based Jade Logistics.Jade Logistics provides Master terminal operating systems (TOS) for mixed cargo terminals.With N4, Octopi and Jade Master Terminal, Navis can offer the flexibility of the right TOS for any prospective customer’s cargo requirements. The Georgia Ports Authority and the Virginia Port Authority filed on Friday, Feb. The agreement encourages voluntary cooperation in the areas of operational and supply chain efficiencies, safety, communications and customer service. “The U.S. East Coast continues to see larger vessels and cargo exchanges since the opening of the expanded Panama Canal last year,” VPA CEO and Executive Director John Reinhart and GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch said in a joint statement. “Increasingly, our customers are seeking gateway ports on the East Coast that can leverage sufficient landside infrastructure to ensure the free flow of cargo. The states of Georgia and Virginia have made the necessary investments to prepare for this new era in global trade.

The Hague, Netherlands - With just 50 days until SOLAS Verified Gross Mass (VGM) comes into force APM Terminals is taking the lead to ensure a smooth transition into the new regulatory environment facing over 120 million containers entering the international supply chain. Under international law from 1st July, 2016 shippers are required to provide a VGM for every container before it can be loaded with the shipping line. In 2014, the International Maritime organization (IMO), the agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating international seaborne trade, approved amendments to the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) which as of 1st July 2016 will require verification and documentation of loaded containers (Verified Gross Mass, or “VGM”) before they can be loaded onto vessels.

Automation is rapidly gaining ground in container terminals of all sizes. However, until now, one area of container handling has still required manual work, often in dangerous conditions. Stevedores are still removing twistlocks during the discharge process and fixing twistlocks during the load process. They work close to suspended loads and move in the same area as the horizontal transport (straddle carriers or trucks). The handling of centre twistlocks on twin and twin-tandem lifts is particularly dangerous and only possible if the containers are first placed on a rack. At the same time as vessel sizes are growing, terminals are under increased pressure to increase productivity and provide shipping lines with the most cost-effective service possible.

The mega container ships raising concerns among vessel operators, insurers and regulators about the potential for catastrophic accidents. Shipping lines have sought to stay competitive by running larger, more fuel-efficient container ships in major shipping lanes, holding down the cost of ocean shipping and reducing their cost per container. But the gigantification of container ships and tanker vessels, as well as more particular stability problems of car carrier designs, need to be addressed from an insurance risk perspective, says Dieter Berg, president, International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI). In this Insurance Institute of London Lecture, Peter Townsend, Head of London Marine at Swiss Re cautioned how these new bigger ships were bringing new concerns to the insurance industry.

Peel Ports Group has committed £5.5 million to introducing advanced infrastructure and AutoGates technology as part of its ongoing investment at the Port of Liverpool. With the £300 million deepwater Liverpool2 expansion due to be open next year, this latest development is set to strengthen the port-side logistics required to support increased cargo volume. At present, a manual system is currently in place, requiring drivers to register at a site office, where they complete a form and wait for clearance before entering.

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, will deliver Kalmar SmartLane automated gate system to Port of Liverpool, operated by Peel Ports Group. The new system will reduce waiting times and administration for hauliers, resulting in faster turnaround. The implementation is scheduled to be completed by early 2015. Investment in Kalmar SmartLane automated gate system is part of Peelport's £5.5m package of improvements to port infrastructure. Tideworks Technology, Inc., a premier provider of full-service terminal management and planning software solutions, today announced that the new Barranquilla Container Terminal (BCT), located at the Port of Barranquilla, Colombia, has successfully implemented and gone live with Tideworks’ terminal operating system (TOS) solutions. Global maritime IT services company, Versiant, says that its Lynx™ mobile software solution has been installed by the Port of Houston Authority (PHA) providing real-time accurate information for their customers at Barbours Cut and Bayport Terminals. By this means, customers are now able to verify container availability, view vessel schedules, review bookings and retrieve gate EIRs prior to arriving at the terminal, with an intuitive user interface, simply by using virtually any mobile device.

In July 2013 Konecranes received an order for eight Rubber Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes from Bolloré Group. The cranes will be delivered to container terminals operated by Bolloré Africa Logistics in Pointe Noire, Congo, and in Douala, Cameroon in the second half of 2014. The parties have agreed not to disclose the value of the order. “Our cooperation with Bolloré goes back to 2007, when Bolloré purchased its first RTG for Abidjan Terminal in Ivory Coast. We have delivered 35 RTGs to container terminals operated by Bolloré Group in West Africa, and we are very proud to get this new order which will bring the total to 43,” says Antoine Bosquet, Konecranes’ Sales Director, Port Cranes, region IMEA.

Process control and artificial vision technology specialist Orbita Ingenieria launched a new optical character recognition (OCR) system to automate freight container identification and damage inspection during vessel loading and unloading at port terminals. The Orbita CraneOCR system provides real-time ISO code recognition for 20ft, 40ft, 45ft and twin-20ft containers as they are moved to and from multiple lanes under and behind ship-to-shore (STS) gantry cranes. Tideworks Technology® announce that Barranquilla Container Terminal chooses its Terminal Operating System (TOS). Barranquilla Container Terminal is a joint venture between SSA International and Sociedad Portuaria del Norte (SNP). The new facility will be managed by Santa Marta International Terminal Company (SMITCO) and will initially have capacity for approximately 122,000 TEU annually. Barranquilla Container Terminal plans to expand the container yard to five hectares and increase capacity to 190,000 TEU during a second phase of development. Cargotec has won a contract to supply ten state-of-the-art Kalmar automatic stacking cranes and 17 customer specific automatic shuttle carriers to leading terminal services' provider TraPac Inc, in Los Angeles, USA. The equipment will be delivered to TraPac Inc, a subsidiary of Mitsui OSK Lines, in 2012 and 2013. The parties have agreed not to disclose the value of the order. The order has been booked in the third quarter of 2011. Lennart Brelin, Cargotec Executive Vice President, Americas said this order reinforced the company's position as a leading supplier in port automation.

Cargotec to partner with DP World in port automation project for London Gateway. Cargotec has been chosen as the preferred partner to supply 40 Kalmar automatic stacking cranes with related technology and 28 Kalmar shuttle carriers to DP World's deepsea container port London Gateway. Cargotec and DP World have signed a cooperation agreement and aim to finalise the contract shortly. The parties have agreed not to disclose the value of the intended contract however, a typical value of this size of a project is around EUR 100-150 million depending on the scope of the delivery.

The completion of the first phase of Jeddah Islamic Port's newest world-class container facility, Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT), was celebrated on 22 December 2009 with the arrival of UASC's Vessel Al Muttanabi. Located at the northern end of the Jeddah Islamic Port (JIP), work at the two billion Saudi Riyal (approx USD 510MM) Greenfield container-terminal, commenced in January 2008. The 1.8 million TEU, second-generation terminal constructed under a BOT agreement with the Saudi Port Authority, is due to be fully completed by Q3 2010.
