Lubricants: Mitigating Risk without Sacrificing Performance

A new entry to the EAL lubricant race emerges from RSC Bio Solutions. Deep roots, new technologies and familiar names create the basis for a different way of approaching marine lubricants. It isn’t surprising that RSC Bio Solutions, a provider of environmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs) and cleaners, chose the SMM 2016 trade exposition in Hamburg, Germany as the platform to launch its newest product. The U.S. EPA’s 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP) requirements are now in place, requiring the use of environmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs) in oil to water interfaces for vessels over 79 feet. The VGP revision also requires any above water line hull cleaning or deck washdowns resulting in discharge to be conducted with appropriate cleaners and detergents. A webinar, Complying with New EPA Lubricant, Cleaner Requirements for Marine, Offshore Industries, will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at 2-3:15 p.m. EDT to help clarify the VGP EAL rules and requirements.

RSC Bio Solutions: Product for VGP Requirement

RSC Bio Solutions said that its EnviroLogic Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs), including hydraulic, stern tube and thruster oils, and Safecare cleaners and their constituent components have been evaluated by independent laboratories to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s definitions of biodegradable, minimally-toxic and not bioaccumulative. RSC Bio Solutions, therefore, certifies its hydraulic fluids and cleaner products as 2013 VGP Compliant. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that all vessels use an “Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant” (EAL) in oil to water interfaces unless technically infeasible.
