Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has tested technology to precisely analyze the radiated noise of ships underwater using sonar.The technique measures the intensity, direction, and distance, and SHI has used it to precisely analyze the cause of noise emitted from a 174,000cbm LNG carrier.SHI is using the technology to forecast noise depending on speed and draft and aims to expand it beyond propellers to include underwater radiated noise from engines and machinery.The IMO is considering regulations on underwater noise, as it can adversely affect animals such as whales.

"This robustly-tested technology can offer considerable commercial advantages to the offshore industry," says Ivar Fjermeros, Senior Sales Manager, Advanced Offshore Solutions. "MacGregor understands the complexity of ship-to-ship load transfers and the limitations imposed by unpredictable, non-synchronised movements in a seaway. With the systems currently available, a crane's capacity is effectively de-rated because of the conservative approach required to minimise risks associated with the relative movements of the vessels.

FLNG deal-making has been sporadic since Woodside Petroleum at the end of 2013 delayed a final investment decision for the giant Browse FLNG project off Northwest Australia. The previous year had seen go-aheads for most of the floating liquefied natural gas projects (FLNG) underway today, including Shell’s Prelude FLNG — Woodside’s choice, it seems, of a liquefaction solution for fields 200 kilometers offshore. The official christening of the World Sapphire marks the completion of a six-ship order whereby Damen Shipyards has delivered six Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) to Norwegian company World Wide Supply (WWS) AS in just six months. The Damen PSV 3300 features a radical design rethink, with a wave piercing bow, slender hull lines and diesel electric propulsion with azimuth stern drives, combining to optimize seakeeping and fuel efficiency. Statoil reported that on Feb. 18, the partners in the Gudrun license resolved to submit a plan for development and operation (PDO) of this North Sea discovery to the Norwegian authorities. “The decision marks an important milestone in the continued development of this part of the Norwegian continental shelf,” said Øystein Michelsen. “We’re pleased that work will now begin on recovering Gudrun’s assets.” Michelsen is executive vice president for Exploration & Production Norway at field operator Statoil.

Simrad has been selected to supply radar and VHF communications equipment to 100 patrol boats currently in production for the Yemen Coast Guard. Delivery and installation of the CR44 radar and RD68 dVHF radios for the first 25 boats is underway. Installation will continue throughout the year with the final patrol boat completed by the end of 2004. The CR44 multi-function radar from Simrad’s xx44/54 series of professional GPS ChartRadars, Chartplotters, ChartSounders and ChartRadarSounders has been chosen as the main navigation tool onboard. Including an easy to operate control panel with quick response keys for each function, the CR44 has been designed with user-friendly, yet advanced operation at its core.

A high-tech infrared camera system now monitors the port of Valdez and vessels transiting Prince William Sound.
