EU's Piracy Fight Continues Amid COVID-19 Crisis

The European Union's counter-piracy military force said it continues to patrol and work with global partners to fight piracy at sea during the coronavirus pandemic. Seafarers face continuing threats from pirates and armed robbers, says the ICC International Maritime Bureau (IMB), who reported 47 attacks in the first three months of 2020, up from 38 in the same period last year. HHI Receives AIP for Bulk Carrier Design

Offshore Wind Cable Market to Reach $3B

The global offshore wind cable market is estimated to grow at CAGR above 16% over the forecast time frame 2019 to 2026 and reach the market value around $3 billion by 2026.The demand for offshore wind cables has seen significant development due to the paradigm shift towards fresh renewable techniques with increasing consciousness of carbon emission limits, said a report by Acumen Research and Consulting."Offshore wind turbines are rapidly growing, with a higher capacity production more than onshore wind generation. In addition, offshore wind wires play a major part in the transport of fresh produced electricity from offshore wind farms to the coast.

US, Iraq, Kuwait Complete Trilateral Exercise

The U.S. Navy and Coast Guard completed a trilateral exercise with Iraqi navy and Kuwaiti navy partners in the Northern Arabian Gulf, August 15.The exercise focused on improving collective proficiency in maritime security tactics between the three nations and ensuring the freedom of navigation throughout the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations. Participants included the guided-missile destroyer USS The Sullivans (DDG 68), U.S. coastal patrol ships USS Tempest (PC 2) and USS Chinook (PC 9), U.S. Coast Guard Island-class patrol boat USCGC Monomoy (WPB 1326), Iraqi navy patrol boat P 303, and Kuwaiti navy patrol boat KNS Al-Garoh (P 3725). The Sullivans led command and control of each event throughout the exercise.

Fisherman Medevaced off New York Coast

A U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew medevaced a 51-year-old man, early Thursday morning from a fishing vessel approximately 45-miles south of Montauk. Watchstanders at Sector Long Island Sound command center received notification at approximately 2 a.m., on VHF-FM channel 16 from the master of the vessel who was suffering severe stomach pains. The watchstanders notified the Coast Guard flight surgeon who recommended a medevac for the man to receive medical care within four hours. The crew safely transported him to T.F. Green Airport in Rhode Island, where emergency medical service personnel transferred him to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. The man is reported to be in stable condition.

US to Commission USS Lewis B. Puller

The Navy will commission the Expeditionary Sea Base USS Lewis B. Puller (ESB 3) during a 5 p.m. AST ceremony Thursday, August 17, at Khalifa bin Salman Port in Al Hidd, Bahrain. The future Lewis B. Puller - currently USNS Lewis B. Puller (T-ESB 3 )- is the second ship to bear the name of Lt. Gen. Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller, a distinguished combat veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Puller is the only Marine to have been awarded the Navy Cross on five separate occasions and is the most decorated individual in the history of the USMC. The first Lewis B. UK, France, US Sign Trilateral Submarine Agreement

Naval leaders from the United Kingdom, France and the United States signed an agreement June 1, designed to increase coordination for anti-submarine warfare activities of the three countries as they operate in the 5th Fleet area of operations. Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) Vice Adm. Kevin M. Donegan signed the trilateral agreement with Vice Adm. Louis-Michel Guillaume, commander, French Submarine and Strategic Oceanic Forces (ALFOST) and Rear Adm. Robert K. Tarrant, commander, Operations of the Royal Navy, at Donegan's headquarters in the Kingdom of Bahrain. This agreement follows the signing of a document by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson, First Sea Lord of the United Kingdom Adm. Sir Philip Jones, and French Chief of Naval Staff Adm.

1917 - Destroyer Division 8, commanded by Cmdr. Joseph K. Taussig, arrive at Queenstown, Ireland, to protect convoy escorts against German U-Boats. 1942 - Battle of the Coral Sea begins when TF 17 attacks the Japanese Tulagi Invasion Force at Tulagi, Solomons. 1945 - Marine Sgt. Elbert L. Kinser throws himself upon a grenade during the Okinawa Campaign and saves his fellow Marines. He is posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. 1945 - During the Okinawa Campaign, the Japanese attempt to land on Okinawa but are repulsed by the Allied naval forces.

SC Ports Authority Plans 2nd Inland Port Facility

The South Carolina Ports Authority announced plans to pursue a second inland port facility, driven by the success of Inland Port Greer and demand for enhanced efficiency of international container movements between the Port of Charleston and growing markets in South Carolina and North Carolina. "Inland Port Greer is one of SCPA's most successful investments, as the growth of intermodal container volume movement in our state and region requires appropriate facilities in the interior to ground loaded and empty containers and to leverage the efficiency and sustainability of rail transportation," SCPA president and CEO Jim Newsome said. "If it is feasible, an additional inland port will be a great diversification of our logistics footprint.

1862 - Navy ship USS Ethan Allen, commanded by acting-Lt. William B. Eaton, captures the schooner Olive Branch at sea off the Florida coast. 1943 - Submarines USS Pollack (SS 180) and USS Gato (SS 212) attack and cause the sinking of two Japanese ships. 1945 - TF 38 aircraft attacks Japanese shipping and airfields on Formosa and in the Pescadores, sinking approximately 15 vessels. 1954 - The world's first nuclear submarine, USS Nautilus (SSN-571) is christened and launched at Groton, Conn.

Mustin makes first underway catapult launch from a ship, USS North Carolina, at Pensacola Bay, Fla. 1917 - German submarine torpedoes USS Alcedo off French coast. 1923 - Tests designed to prove the feasibility of launching a small seaplane from a submarine occur at Hampton Roads Naval Base. A Martin MS-1, stored disassembled in a tank on board USS S-1, was removed and assembled.

Today in U.S. 1812 - U.S. sloop of war Wasp captures HM brig Frolic. 1859 - U.S. Marines reach Harper's Ferry, Va. and assault the arsenal seized by John Brown and his followers. 1867 - USS Ossippee and USS Resaca participate in formal transfer of Alaska to U.S. authority at Sitka and remain to enforce law and order in new territory. 1944 - Third Fleet Carrier aircraft attack Japanese ships in harbor and land forces around Manila. 1968 - In Operation Sea Lords, the Navy's three major operating forces in Vietnam (TF 115, 116, and 117) are brought together for the first time to stop Vietcong infiltration deep into South Vietnam's Mekong Delta. TF president Paddy Crumlin condemns those responsible for seizure of 'Fragata Libertad', an Argentine navy training ship, in Ghana. The detention of the ship was ordered on application to a court by Elliott Capital Management, which has bought up debt associated with bonds on which the Argentinian government defaulted in 2001. Piracy – Airborne Surveillance Boosted by French Aircraft

The deployment of this Atlantique 2 is part of French forces’ permanent contribution to Task Force 465 : one frigate/destroyer and a maritime patrol aircraft in associated support. These two assets are engaged in support of the EU Naval Force commanded by Rear Admiral Jorge Manso. During its deployment, the Atlantique 2 will carry out regular flights above the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. The imagery and data collected by the different sensors and crew members are very important to help fight piracy. They are analysed by intelligence specialists, for example on board Task Force 465 flag ship, and make it possible to better focus the action of the ships and their helicopters.

Portuguese Take Command of EU NAVFOR Counter Piracy

On April 14, in a ceremony held at the Commercial Port of Djibouti, Portuguese Commodore Alberto Correia took over the command of Task Force 465 (TF 465) as the new European Union Naval Force Headquarters – Operation ATALANTA Force Commander. Commodore Correia takes over the duty from his predecessor, Spanish Rear Admiral Juan Rodriguez. During the handover, presided over by EU NAVFOR Deputy Commander, Rear Admiral Guido Rando, Commodore Correia congratulated Rear Admiral Rodriguez for the results achieved during his command and thanked him for his outstanding efforts. He emphasized that ”The mission priorities given to TF 465 are absolutely clear to me.

Hijacked Dhow Faize Osamani Freed

The M/V Asian Glory put to sea on Friday Jan. 29 and headed south to rendezvous with suspected pirate groups in the Indian Ocean. On Saturday Jan. 30, she headed north and eventually made a rendezvous with the hijacked Dhow Faize Osamani. The Faize Osamani was last reported leaving Karachi, bound for Mogadishu with a cargo of rice, on November 28, 2009. The ship’s Master, an all crew Indian crew of 14, reported to the owner that the ship had been hijacked on Jan. 6, 2010 off Kismayo on the Somali coast. The pirated Faize Osamani was spotted by EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) approximately 150 nautical miles North East of Socotra, off the Horn of Africa and appeared to be dead in the water.

Kota Wajar Released by Pirates

On 28 December 2009, the Singapore flagged Container Ship Kota Wajar was released outside Haradere off the coast of Somalia. EU NAVFOR is monitoring the situation. On the early morning of October 15 2009, the Container Ship Kota Wajar, with a crew of 21, was hijacked in the Indian Ocean by Pirates some 300 nautical miles north of the Seychelles. The Canadian warship HMCS Fredericton from TF 508 is now providing medical and logistical assisting to the Kota Wajar.
