Navy's Surgeon-General to Receive Honorary Degree
Franciscan Alvernia University is to award an an Honorary Degree of Humane Letters to Vice-Admiral Matthew L. Nathan before he addresses the Class of 2014 at the upcoming May 2014 Commencement. Nathan is Surgeon General of the Navy and Chief of the Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. Alvernia inform that Nathan’s education and naval background is extensive: he is board certified and holds Fellow status in the American College of Physicians and the American College of Healthcare Executives. He also holds an appointment as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and is a recipient of the American Hospital Association’s Excellence in Leadership award for the Federal Sector.
CLIA Welcome 'Whodunit' Proposals
Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) commend the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Legal Committee's proposals for on-board crime procedures. The International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Legal Committee recently adopted a proposal which CLIA co-sponsored on international standards for crime reporting, cooperation between governments, evidence preservation and care for victims. CLIA first offered the proposal to the IMO in 2011, marking the continuation of the Association's efforts to have such standards adopted globally. In addition to CLIA, other co-sponsors were the United Kingdom, the International Federation of Shipmaster's Associations, and the International Association of Airport and Seaport Police. The proposal was also supported by the United States.

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) President, Dr. William J. Brennan, has announced that Peter G. Vigue, chairman and chief executive officer of The Cianbro Companies will address the graduating class at the college’s 68th Commencement on Saturday, April 30, 2011, at 11 a.m., in Alexander Fieldhouse. Vigue, a 1969 graduate of Maine Maritime Academy, will receive an honorary doctorate from the college. “Pete Vigue exemplifies the talent and drive so typical of many of our graduates,” said Brennan.
Homeland Security Certification
More than 50 Navy professionals – Sailors and civilians – earned their homeland security certification Nov. 6 after attending a two-day seminar in Pearl Harbor. Following the days of Sept. 11, 2001, a call to action was made for all Americans to come together in defense of the county, and the discussion of homeland security became a leading topic of the day. The American College of Forensic Examiners (ACFEI) developed a program in January 2003 for people around the nation to become certified in homeland security. The Certified in Homeland Security (CHS) program, according to the program's Web site, provides certification, training and continuing education to professionals committed to improving homeland security.
Senate Hearing on Emission Reductions
Pictured is Senator Boxer. On February 14, the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works conducted a legislative hearing on the Marine Vessel Emissions Reduction Act of 2007 (S. 1499). Committee Chair Barbara Boxer (D-CA) discussed the harmful air emissions from ships and the measures that would be required if her proposed legislation were enacted. Ranking Member James Inhofe (R-OK) pointed out that adoption of MARPOL Annex VI is preferable to enacting unilateral legislation.
