Swire Shipping Opens Branch Office in Japan

Swire Shipping commemorated the opening of its new Japan branch office in Tokyo on February 21,2024 with an event at The Palace Hotel in Tokyo, marking Swire Shipping’s official return to Japan with a physical presence.A highlight of the evening was the Kagami-biraki ceremony – the customary breaking open of a sake barrel – a tradition steeped in respect and appreciation. Esteemed long-serving former employees of Swire, who had served the company with dedication in the past, shared a toast of sake alongside the current Japan team onstage.

China Navigation Signs Fleet-wide Contract for Sperry Marine Connected ECDIS

Sperry Marine received a fleet-wide order for its new SperrySphere Connected ECDIS, with a roll-out to 36 vessels operated by The China Navigation Company (CNCo), a member of the Swire Group. Connected ECDIS is the latest addition to Sperry Marine’s portfolio of smart bridge solutions, connected via the unique SperrySphere platform.China Navigation will upgrade 24 of its bulk carriers and 12 of its containerships with Connected ECDIS, simplifying and securing the transfer of chart data from back of bridge to the regulated navigation systems, Sperry Marine said.According to Sperry Marine, Connected ECDIS supports improved cyber risk management by removing the need to use USB memory devices when transferring electronic chart data.

Swire Bulk Taps Norborg as CEO

CNCo Acquires of Hamburg Süd Units

German container shipping line Hamburg Süd and The China Navigation Company (CNCo) have completed the sale of Hamburg Süd’s dry bulk shipping business to CNCo after receiving regulatory approval.Earlier in January, Hamburg Süd announced that it is selling its bulk shipping business, which includes Rudolf A. Oetker (RAO) and the bulk activities in Furness Withy (London and Melbourne) and Aliança Navegação e Logística,  to Singapore’s CNCo, part of the Swire Group,  as it focusses on its liner business with its two container shipping brands, Hamburg Süd and Aliança.The RAO Tankers business unit is not included in the agreement and will remain part of the Hamburg Süd Group.The affected dry bulk shipping units with offices in Hamburg…

Teekay Joins SRTI

Teekay Shipping Corporation, the global marine energy transportation, storage & production company, has signed up to the Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative (SRTI).The Canadian shipowner thus  joined A.P. China Navigation Buys Bulk Shipping Arm of Hamburg Süd

German shipping group Hamburg Süd announced that it is selling its bulk shipping business to Singapore’s China Navigation Company (CNCo), part of the Swire Group,  as it focusses on its liner business with its two container shipping brands, Hamburg Süd and Aliança.The agreement includes Hamburg Süd subsidiaries Rudolf A. Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative Launched

Industry leaders and non-profit the Sustainable Shipping Initiative announced the launch of the Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative’s (SRTI) online platform - a tool for sharing information on ship recycling to drive responsible practice.According to a press release, the platform comes nine months after a group of shipping companies first announced their collective effort to use the market-drivers that transparency brings to make responsible ship recycling the norm. Demanding transparency holds the shipping industry to account, raising the bar for current practice as well as creating fair competition among ship-owners.In 2017, 835 ships were recycled out of a world fleet of 50,000.

USP, CNCo Join to Research New-Generation Low-Carbon Ships

China Navigation Company Opens Vancouver Branch

China Navigation Company (CNCo), part of the Swire Group, has expanded its presence in North America by establishing a branch office in Vancouver, Canada.The opening ceremony was graced by Bruce Ralston, Minister of Jobs, Trade & Technology, British Columbia, who unveiled a plaque in the CNCo office located at W Hastings Street.Minister Bruce Ralston said, “The Province recognises the significant contribution that The China Navigation Company makes to the shipping industry worldwide. CNCo, SPREP Ink Recycling MOU for Pacific Islands

The China Navigation Company (CNCo) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment (SPREP) have today signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to address critical waste management issues in the Pacific islands. Known as the “Moana Taka Partnership”, this MOU allows for CNCo vessels to carry containers of recyclable waste from eligible Pacific island ports, pro bono, to be sustainably treated and recycled in suitable ports in Asia Pacific. “This historic partnership will be of great benefit to our Pacific islands, and one for which we are very appreciative to The China Navigation Company,” said Kosi Latu, Director General of SPREP. “Our Pacific islands face an immense waste management challenge.

Naming Ceremony for CNCo Newbuilding

Following the naming of its new cement carrier, MV Aotearoa Chief, in New Zealand yesterday, The China Navigation Company (CNCo) christened its last newbuild, MV Tunsin, on 16 November at the Imabari Shipyard in Japan. Tunsin is the 241st CNCo newbuilding and the 86th vessel in this series. CNCo ordered four handysize bulk carriers (Imbari38 loggers) from Imabari Shipbuilding in 2014. Deliveries of the first three vessels, MV Taiyuan, MV Tientsin and MV Tsingtao took place between July and October this year. The names chosen for the vessels reflect CNCo’s long history in the Asia Pacific region since its first ships sailed on the Yangtze River in 1872. MV Tunsin was named by lady sponsor, Sara Cutler, wife of Robert Cutler, Staff Director of John Swire & Sons Ltd.

CNCo Orders Remote Monitoring for 35 Vessels

Radio Holland, a global NavCom and service company in the maritime industry, said it has concluded  a maintenance and remote monitoring agreement with The China Navigation Company (CNCo) for 35 vessels. Radio Holland already provides CNCo’s newbuild, multipurpose vessels and bulk carriers with NavCom packages, and the latest agreement now covers the maintenance of this equipment on board 35 vessels. This further cooperation follows a remote monitoring pilot project. Radio Holland will now introduce remote monitoring throughout CNCo’s fleet.

Swire Bulk Expands Atlantic Footprint

Swire Bulk, the dry bulk operating arm of The China Navigation Company (CNCo), opened an US Atlantic desk in the City of Miami, Florida, United States, on 25 January 2016. This new desk, headed by Ronald Cellucci, Swire Bulk’s newly appointed Regional Office Manager for Atlantic North America, is located at the Brickell City Centre. Andrew Kidd, CNCo’s Swire Bulk General Manager, said, “The Miami desk will be working closely with our London and San Francisco offices to grow Swire Bulk’s dry bulk handy business in North and South America. “Despite the challenging trading conditions, China Navigation takes a long term view of growing its business and has invested in a newbuilding programme to renew and expand its fleet since 2013.

Radio Holland Awarded Remote Monitoring Agreement

Radio Holland, part of the newly formed company RH Marine Group, has been awarded a Remote Monitoring Agreement from The China Navigation Company (CNCo). Sustainable Shipping Initiative leans on shipping ahead of COP21

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) is stepping up pressure on the shipping industry ahead of the COP21 Climate Change Conference in Paris, says The Chamber of Shipping of British Columbia. SSI want the IMO to support the UNFCCC global CO2 reduction targets on the basis that climate change is one of the biggest risks to the future of global trade and to the shipping industry. In its response, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has pointed out that mandatory CO2 reduction measures already adopted by the IMO combined with the aggressive fuel efficiency measures being taken by merchant ships worldwide, will proportionately deliver far more ambitious CO2 reductions than the pledges so far made by governments.

Swire Upgrades Asia-Pac Coverage

Singapore-based liner trade division of The China Navigation Company (CNC) Swire Shipping has upgraded its multipurpose liner service coverage in the Asia Pacific region. The company’s dedicated Trans-Tasman service operating between New Zealand and Australia will be enhanced to provide a 15-day frequency. Swire will also start providing 12 additional Brisbane calls by a direct service from New Zealand. Swire Shipping’s weekly liner service from Brisbane to Lae, Papua New Guinea (PNG) will be further improved with two additional sailings per month with four-day transit times. The upgraded service will provide six direct sailings per month. A regular service connecting Brisbane to ports in Southeast Asia will be reintroduced to Swire Shipping’s network coverage.

Clarksons Appoint New Prospective Chairman

Leading shipping services group, Clarkson PLC, says that James Hughes-Hallett will join the Board as a Non-Executive Director with immediate effect and will take over as Chairman from 1 January 2015 when Bob Benton will retire from the Board. Clarksons explain that James Hughes-Hallett brings a wealth of experience in the world of shipping, transportation, offshore and global trade, having worked for the Swire group since 1976. He is currently chairman of John Swire & Sons Limited, a Non-Executive Director of Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Swire Pacific Ltd and Swire Properties Ltd. He is a Director of Steamships Trading Co Ltd and is Chairman of United States Cold Storage Inc.

Baltic Exchange Appoint Guy Campbell Chairman

Guy Campbell of the China Navigation Company has been appointed by the Baltic Exchange Board of Directors as Chairman for a two year term of office. He replaces Quentin Soanes who served as Chairman from 2012. Guy Campbell, FIFC, MCIArb is aged 47 and began his shipping career at shipbroker JE Hyde & Co Ltd in 1990. A dry cargo specialist, he became a Baltic Exchange member in 1991, remained at JE Hyde for seven years before joining Koch Industries, where he spent 10 years as a chartering manager and eventual Director, Ocean Freight for Koch Carbon LLC. After six years as Dry Cargo Managing Director at shipbroker Clarksons, he now works for The China Navigation Company, the deep sea ship owning and operating arm of the Swire Group.

China Navigation to Buy Pacifca Shipping (New Zealand)

The China Navigation Company (CNCo), the deep sea shipping arm of the multinational Swire Group, has signed a conditional sale and purchase agreement to acquire Pacifica Shipping (Pacifica) from the Skeggs Group of companies in New Zealand. CNCo has been a long term participant in the New Zealand’s maritime and transport industry. The first Swire vessel called to New Zealand 130 years ago. Today Swire explains that it has extensive interests in agencies, stevedoring, logistics and multipurpose liner shipping services. Swire Shipping, CNCo’s liner shipping arm, currently operates five independent multi-purpose liner services from New Zealand to Asia, Australia, North America and the Pacific Islands.
