Capacity management is firmly on the minds of Maersk executives as the largest container ships in the world steam into service. Maersk Line’s first 18,000 teu vessel, the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller, which was doing the rounds on her maiden voyage in Northern Europe last week, has prompted much speculation on her economies of scale, particularly as HHI has just confirmed that it is negotiating an order for five slightly larger ships with UASC, says Drewry Maritime Research in a new paper. Cammell Laird Works To Save Costa Contract

Cammell Laird Holdings Plc is trying to hammer out a new agreement this week to save a nearly $76 million (51 million pound) cruise liner contract and protect hundreds of jobs, the Daily Telegraph reported. It said senior executives headed by Chief Executive John Stafford were studying fresh proposals on the cruise liner contract. They were put forward by Costa Crociere, the Italian cruise line owned by U.S. Carnival Corp., after two and a half days of talks in Genoa last week, the paper said.

GPS for Sydney Ferries

According to the Daily Telegraph, 30 of the 31 ferries in Sydney had global position systems installed, which will help improve the way ferries dock at a destination. In addition, the Hunter-based maritime firm Novamarine would install black boxes into the ferries, while Chipping-Norton based MTU Detroit Diesel would upgrade the engines on First Fleet and Rivercat vessels. The measures are part of a $5.4m safety upgrade announced in October last year after the Manly ferry Collaroy, with 200 people on board, hit a wharf as it was berthing at Circular Quay in September 19. Two people suffered minor injuries in the accident. (Source: Daily Telegraph)
