The Virginia-class submarine Indiana (SSN 789) was launched into the James River at Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Newport News Shipbuilding division, the shipbuilder announced. The boat was moved to the shipyard’s submarine pier for final outfitting, testing and crew certification. “Launch is a true testament to our shipbuilders’ roughly four years of hard work,” said Matt Needy, Newport News’ vice president of submarines and fleet support. “Over the next several months, we will work closely with the Indiana crew to bring this great ship to life.

The U.S. Navy has accepted delivery of its newest warship, a state-of-the-art aircraft carrier to be named in honor of the 38th president of the United States. The product of years of construction, planning and design, the future USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) was delivered from Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding division to the Navy in Newport News, Va., on May 31, following the ship's completion of acceptance trials May 26. Ford will be commissioned into the fleet this summer, formally placing the ship into active service.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) launched the Virginia-class submarine John Warner (SSN 785) into the James River on September 10 at the company's Newport News Shipbuilding division, kicking off the final outfitting, testing and crew certification phase of construction prior to sea trials next year. "The John Warner team has made tremendous progress over the last year," said Jim Hughes, Newport News' vice president of submarines and fleet support. A video of the launching is available here. QinetiQ’s Paramarine Ship and Submersible Design Software has been selected by Newport News Shipbuilding (NSS) as its primary naval architectural software. QinetiQ Paramarine Software will be used for all ships designed and built at its shipyard, including use on the U.S. Navy’s latest class of aircraft carriers and to support submarine research and development. Huntington Ingalls Industries welcomed the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) to its Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division today, following a six-week delay in its arrival. Lincoln was originally scheduled to arrive Feb. 14 for its refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH), but it was among the Navy projects delayed due to uncertainties surrounding the defense budget and funding of the work. Northrop Grumman Corporation successfully redelivered the nation's newest and most advanced nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), to the U.S. Navy after a post shakedown availability (PSA). The Ronald Reagan returned to the company's Newport News sector shipyard in December for the PSA, a typical availability in the early life of a carrier that allows the Navy and Newport News team to resolve any items that came up during early cruises and make any last-minute changes and upgrades.

Newport News Shipbuilding, Newport News, Va., is being awarded a $76,847,120 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for planning yard, design, configuration management and logistics support for SSN 688, SSN 21 and SSBN class operational submarines and design services for new construction SSN 21 class submarines. Work will be performed in Newport News, Va., and is expected to be completed by September 2002. Contract funds in the amount of $39,960,000 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was not competitively procured. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C., is the contracting activity.

Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., Newport News, Va., is being awarded a $5,878,888 cost-plus-fixed-fee modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-99-C-2100) for aircraft carrier engineering support services. The contract will provide engineering, technical and design agent services in support of aircraft carrier programs. This effort includes conducting and supporting feasibility and tradeoff studies on new and modified shipboard systems and supporting ship design efforts. Work will be performed in Newport News, Va., and is to be completed by September 2003. Contract funds in the amount of $5,878,888 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.
