New Device Aims to Improve Docking Safety

A new innovative device has been engineered to improve docking safety.Designed to be installed on quay walls, the Dynamic Protective Barrier features a novel mechanism to dissipate energy for short duration impact caused by docking vessels.Matthew Czerniatewicz, founder of Dynamic Protective Barriers (DPB), said other solutions available on the market today typically absorb and accumulate the kinetic energy at the point of docking, which can cause micro and macro damages to the port infrastructure and as well as the ship.

New Device Protects Against RF Interference and Jamming

NovAtel, part of technology company Hexagon, has unveiled a new GPS Anti-Jam Technology (GAJT) device amid heightened interference and jamming in marine environments worldwide. The low size, weight and power (SWaP) GAJT-410MS is designed to protect civil and military operations from interference and jamming, with jammer direction-finding capabilities for enhanced situation awareness in the marine environment.Interference, both benign and malicious, is a challenge facing civilian and military operations.

The Dutch non-profit The Ocean Cleanup has just announced a new device to catch plastic before if flows into the ocean.The organization that develops advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic, unveiled its invention to prevent the unrelenting flow of plastic pollution into the world’s oceans.The Interceptor, under development by The Ocean Cleanup since 2015, complements the organization’s founding mission by attacking the flow of plastic garbage at its source, the world’s vast network of rivers.“To truly rid the oceans of plastic, we need to both clean up the legacy and close the tap, preventing more plastic from reaching the oceans in the first place.

Oil Spill Cleanup Device Tailored for the Arctic

A new oil spill response device capable of cleaning up spills in arctic conditions has been launched in an effort to bolster Norway’s spill preparedness.The new device, dubbed Arctic FoxTail, is a winterized version of H. Henriksen’s standard Foxtail vertical adhesion band (VAB) skimmer, which filters out oil spills from the seawater using its sorbent mops. NYK Develops Onboard Sulfur-in-oil Analyzer

NYK and Nippon Yuka Kogyo Co., Ltd., an NYK Group company, have teamed with Horiba Ltd. to develop a new sulfur-in-oil analyzer for ships. The new device is based on an existing device used at onshore analysis centers.Using this new analyzer, NYK will be able to thoroughly comply with regulations limiting sulfur oxides (SOx) from vessels, as well as optimize the company’s use of low-sulfur fuel oil.Certain areas around Europe and North America have been designated as emission control areas (ECAs) to prevent air pollution, and ships sailing though those areas are required to use onboard fuel oil having a sulfur content of no more than 0.1 percent.Therefore…

New Energy-saving Windshield on MOL MARVEL

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. today announced that it has started demonstration tests of a new windshield for containerships, which has the potential to reduce wind resistance, save fuel, and reduce CO2 emissions. MOL jointly developed the device with MOL Techno-Trade, Ltd. Ouchi Ocean Consultant, Inc., Akishima Laboratory Inc., and the University of Tokyo. The project was backed by the “Joint R&D for Industry Program”, in which Nippon Kaiji Kyokai promotes wide-ranging R&D activities in cooperation with industry, government and academia. Innovation Goes Global: Safely Testing Marine Bollards

A UK-based manufacturer has come up with a new solution for safely testing marine bollards and is now planning to take the innovation global. Working with the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS), Tyne and Wear Marine (TWM) has spent the last year developing the ‘Bollard Load Test’ (BLT), which uses a powerful hydraulic ram and specialist torque rope to recreate more than 100 tons of ‘pull.’ This breakthrough replaces the traditional method of a tug pulling against the bollard, a method that has previously caused damage to vessels and can be dangerous to the people involved in the test.

New Ship-based System Takes Out GPS Jamming Threat

With GPS jamming a growing worry for UK shipping, a new device seamlessly switches systems to counter the navigational menace. In development since 2005, the ACCSEAS project used a system on the vessel THV Galatea in the seas off Harwich to show that the PNT (Positioning, Navigation and Timing) technology was resilient enough to withstand the worst case scenario of a ship suddenly losing all GPS signals, reports PC Advisor. In theory it would be possible to simply turn off a GPS system and switch on the powerful, longwave eLoran (eLOng RAnge Navigation), but in the middle of a busy shipping lane sea captains don't necessarily realise what is happening to them quickly enough.

Tracerco Targets Fuel Fraud

New device will help combat multi billion dollar global crime. Tracerco, part of the Johnson Matthey group, has developed what it touts to be the world’s first fully portable, lightweight and rugged system to test for tampering in fuel. Dubbed Nemesis, the company claims it is the only analyser of its kind, and is the latest addition to Tracerco’s range of Product Assurance technologies and is expected to play a significant role in the global fight against fuel adulteration, substitution and smuggling. Fuel adulteration is a global problem in both the developed world and emerging economies, driven by significant price differentials between subsidised or rebated fuels, non-rebated fuels and industrial solvents.

New Device Fires a Painless Warning Shot to Boaters

The US Coast Guard implements a new non-lethal signaling, warning device in Long Island Sound. The Coast Guard is implementing the use of a non-lethal signaling and warning device to support the service’s ports, waterways, and coastal security mission in Long Island Sound. The LA51 signal and warning device is considered a safer alternative to the current warning devices used by Coast Guard personnel. It is a shorter range round, and the flash and noise produced by the device are more prominent than a splash in the water caused by the M16 tracer round. Additionally, the Department of Defense’s joint non-lethal weapons program has determined through their testing that the LA51 has a low risk of significant injury.

US-based 1EM to Provide Dubai Company With Compact SAT System

1 Engineering & Manufacturing (1EM) develops compact Saturation Diving System (SAT) for Dulam International of Dubai. After three months of internal design work that utilized the company’s years of experience in building 10 large-scale Saturation Diving Systems (SAT Systems), 1EM completed the model for a new “Mini” SAT System that incorporates features of a larger system and offers greater portability while accommodating four to six men. Dulam International signed on as the first customer in July 2012 and delivery is on track for early spring 2013.

Can the Hinge Ship Work?

Hinge-Ship is a patented concept designed to combine the advantages of both deep draft and shallow draft shipping within the confines of a single vessel. The concept, if proven viable, could help to further the mandate of shaving valuable time from the transportation of goods from "point A to point B," as it would literally eliminate the need for storage at transshipment points and the transfer of cargo to other vessels, and all of the time and cost inherent in both.
