Cosco Acquires Stake in Greek Intermodal Firm

Milaha Launches BSX

Middle East's maritime and logistics company Milaha (Qatar Navigation) will start a direct container shipping service connecting the Black Sea and the Mediterranean in its first foray into Europe.According to a press release from the Qatar-based maritime transport and logistics conglomerate the new feeder service marks Milaha’s first European service linking the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Ocean Alliance Launches Day Two Product

The Ocean Alliance has launched its new Day Two Product with an estimated 3.6 million TEU carrying capacity provided by approximately 340 containerships deployed on 41 services. The new offering will commence in April 2018. Alliance partners CMA CGM, COSCO, Evergreen and OOCL will offer 20 Transpacific services, six Asia-Europe services, four Asia-Mediterranean services, four Transatlantic services, five Asia-Middle East services and two Asia-Red Sea services. “Ocean Alliance has been a fantastic success from a customer perspective since its launch last spring and we are very enthusiastic to announce our Day Two Product,” said Olivier Nivoix, Senior Vice President Ocean Alliance Lines.

CMA CGM Otello Largest Box Ship to Call Indonesia

CMA CGM Otello has arrived Indonesia as the largest container vessel to call the country at the Jakarta International Container Terminal. The occasion also celebrated her impending maiden voyage for the industry’s first direct service from Indonesia to the United States (U.S.) on 24 April. Officiating the event was Minister of Transportation, Mr. Budi Karya Sumadi. He joined some 350 guests including various government officials as well as industry stakeholders at the milestone celebration. The 8,238-TEU vessel is deployed for the Java Sea Express (JAX) service and Pendulum Loop 1 (PE1) service by CMA CGM and APL respectively – two operating brands of the CMA CGM Group.

APL Expands Asia-Middle East Service Network

APL today announced the launch of a new Red Sea Express 2 (RE2) Service. Directly linking China to the Red Sea ports of Jeddah, Sokhna and Aqaba, the new RE2 Service expands APL’s Asia-Middle East service network to meet its customers’ growing shipping needs. Designed to enable fast connections between Asia and the Middle East, the RE2 Service offers competitive transit times to Jeddah, Sokhna and Aqaba. Serving the Shanghai and Ningbo export market with additional shipment booking cutoff times, the RE2 Service complements the APL Red Sea Express (REX) Service and provides an alternative choice for customers to tap on the China market. The new RE2 Service will call the ports of Shanghai, Ningbo, Kaohsiung, Shekou, Port Klang, Jeddah, Sokhna, Aqaba, Djibouti and Singapore.

China's Acquisition of Piraeus Port a Booster for Greek Economy?

Greece has formally signed an agreement to sell a 67% stake in the Port of Piraeus to Chinese shipping company China Cosco Holding Co. Under the deal, COSCO, the fourth-largest container shipping firm and second-largest port operator in the world, will pay the cash-strapped country 368.5 million euros (418.8 million U.S. dollars), and also promises to invest another 350 million euros (398.9 million dollars) over the next decade in infrastructure work at the port. In five years of operation, COSCO aims to make the Piraeus port the south gate of the China-Europe land-sea express to speed up transportation between China and Europe, said Xu.

CMA CGM Upgrades Ethiopian Services

CMA CGM develops its Ethiopian intermodal service by linking Djibouti to 6 inland key destinations (Addis Ababa, Mekele, Nefas Meewcha, Gibe, Shashemene and Jinga). It also adds 2 strategic calls in Djibouti, the Ethiopian market gateway, on its MEX1 and REX2 services. CMA CGM announced its Ethiopian services upgrade thanks to new strategic calls added on its Mediterranean Express (MEX) and Red Sea Express (REX) services, as well as the development of its intermodal offer between Djibouti and Ethiopia. CMA CGM links Ethiopia to Djibouti and strengthens inland transportation solutions: A large majority of cargo destined for the landlocked Ethiopian market transits through the Djibouti Dolareh Container Terminal.

Zim Improves Asia-Mediterranean Loops

The Israeli ocean carrier Zim Integrated Shipping Services is upgrading its Asia-Mediterranean service network, comprising the East Med-Black Sea Express, or EMX, and the Asia-India Subcontinent East Med, or AME, by adding new port calls and upsizing tonnage deployment. The upgraded its Asia-Med Services  due to commence in mid-October 2015. The improved rotation will include extended port coverage, two weekly calls in Haifa and Ashdod and other improvements suited to the needs of the Asia-Med market. COSCO Piraeus Pier III Inaugurated

The Inauguration of the Expansion of Pier III of COSCO Piraeus Container Terminal(PCT) was held yesterday. Premier Li Keqiang of China sent a congratulatory message, which was read by Mr. Zou Xiaoli, Chinese Ambassador to Greece during the ceremony. Prime Minister Antonis Samaras of Greece attended the event and made congratulatory remarks. Containership Alliance Launches Asia-Europe Service

Members of the G6 Alliance announced today that their groundbreaking cooperation in Asia-Europe container shipping will begin operation in the first week of March – one month ahead of schedule. “We are eager to roll out our competitive products to benefit customers by offering a comprehensive and increased coverage of 40 ports in the Asia-Europe market with more sailing frequency,” the members said in a statement. The G6 Alliance, serving the Asia-to-Europe-and-Mediterranean market was announced last December. Joint Black Sea Service Suspend

The New World Alliance (TNWA) –Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), APL, and Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) – and Grand Alliance (GA) – Hapag-Lloyd, MISC Berhad, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) –announced on Feb. 3 the suspension of their joint Black Sea service, the EBX (East-Mediterranean/Black Sea Express).   The EBX has been operating since mid-June 2008 and deployed eight ships, each with a capacity of 5,000 TEU. Evergreen, Cosco and Hapag-Lloyd Integrate Red Sea Services

Evergreen, together with its joint service partners Hapag-Lloyd and Cosco Container Line, is to merge its two Red Sea services, the Far East - Red Sea (FRS) service and the Strait - Red Sea Express (SRX) service, into a single new FRS service linking China, South East Asia and the Red Sea. The first sailing on the revised schedule will be made by Evergreen's LT Going, expected to sail from Nansha on November 7. While the two existing services use ships of approximately 1600 – 1800 TEU, the new FRS service will utilise six vessels of around 2700 TEU, four of which will be provided by Evergreen and one each from the other two partners. The port rotation is as follows: Nansha - Hong Kong - Shekou - Singapore - Tanjung Pelepas - Aden - Jeddah - Aqaba - Sokhna Port - Singapore - Nansha.
