MPA Honors ABS

ABS has been awarded the Offshore & Marine Engineering Award by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). This award recognizes organizations that have made significant contributions toward the development of Singapore’s offshore and marine engineering sector. “ABS is honored to receive this award recognizing our leading role in Singapore’s marine and offshore industries,” says ABS Chairman, President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki. The MPA award recognizes ABS for its breakthrough work in the areas of innovation, safety, and environmental protection and is an affirmation of the organization’s efforts in developing guidance for environmental and operational performance and advancing safety in new areas, such as cyber safety and big data.

U.S. Navy Officer Guilty of Bribery

Second U.S. Navy Officer Indicted on Related Bribery Charges. A commander in the U.S. Navy pleaded guilty to federal bribery charges today, admitting that he provided a government contractor with classified ship schedules and other internal U.S. Navy information in exchange for cash, travel and entertainment expenses, as well as the services of prostitutes. A second U.S. Navy officer was also indicted today on related bribery charges by a federal grand jury in the Southern District of California. Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Singapore Port Authority Conducts Oil Spill Exercise

JOSE 2008 involved a scenario where a very large crude carrier (VLCC), ‘Moon Shadow’ (299,999 dwt), carrying 290,000 tons of light crude oil, was hit by an oil tanker MT (motor tanker), ‘Sun Explorer’ (8,722 dwt), carrying 7,700 tons of marine fuel oil. At that time, the VLCC was leaving the traffic separation scheme to discharge its cargo at Shell SBM. After the collision, the VLCC suffered severe damage to two of its cargo tanks containing 32,310 tons of crude each, while the oil tanker’s bow was damaged. The VLCC leaked around 8,000 tons of crude into the sea, causing potential threat to the environment. The ship master of the VLCC immediately reported the incident to MPA’s Marine Safety Control Centre and requested assistance. The first response craft arrived within 30 minutes.

Hyundai Wins $300M Contract

Hyundai Corporation won shipbuilding contracts worth $300 million through its joint shipbuilding venture in China. The company announced that an additional deal concerning nine units of 5,500-ton bunkering tankers had been signed in January 13 at the Shangri-La Hotel in Qingdao. The event, which was presided by President Mark Juhn and other related personnel, was also used as the signing ceremony for the new-building contract of 16 units of 5,600-ton chemical tankers with Greek shipping company Evalend. All in all, Hyundai Corporation has won contracts totaling $330 million to build 28 ships through its shipbuilding arm in China. (Source: www.azom.com)

Hyundai Corporation Signs Shipbuilding Contract

Hyundai Corporation has risen as a major player in the global small and middle sized vessel market as ‘Qingdao Hyundai Shipbuilding,’ a company it launched last June in Qingdao China, has won shipbuilding contracts worth $300 million within a mere month. Corporation concluded a new shipbuilding contract involving 9 units of 5,500-ton bunkering tankers with Aegean, a Greek shipping company. The contract was signed at the Shangri-La Hotel in Qingdao in the presence of President Mark Juhn, CEO of Qingdao Hyundai Shipbuilding Chung In-Mo and Eleftherious Albertis, CTO of Aegean. USCG Commandant Visits Singapore

Admiral Thomas H Collins, Commandant, US Coast Guard (USCG) is in Singapore for a 2-day visit under the Distinguished Visitors Program of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). Over the two days, ADM Collins will be calling on Yeo Cheow Tong, Minister for Transport. He will also be meeting Peter Ho, Chairman, MPA; Chen Tze Penn, Director-General, MPA; and other MPA senior officials. His itinerary will include meetings with key personnel from other Singapore maritime agencies. A highlight of ADM Collins’ visit will be the keynote address which he will be delivering at the opening of the International Maritime and Port Security Conference (IMPSC) on January 21. ADM Collins will be speaking on the “New Challenges to Maritime and Port Security”.
