Singapore Announces Maritime Scholarship Awards

At an award ceremony in Singapore this week, 60 MaritimeONE Scholarships and seven Tripartite Maritime Scholarships (TMSS) were presented, sponsored by 34 partners from industry, foundations, and unions.The number surpassed last yearā€™s award of 54 scholarships by 27 partners. More companies have come onboard to support MaritimeONE Scholarships in recent years, reflecting the focus on talent development by Maritime Singapore. To date, 584 MaritimeONE Scholarships, with a sponsorship value of $16 million have been awarded since the program started in 2007.Besides maritime-related coursesā€¦

OSM Thome and PGS Collaborate on Ammonia-Fuelled Vessels

Norwegian companies OSM Thome and Pherousa Green Shipping (PGS) have entered into a Letter of Intent outlining their collaboration on six 63,000dwt Ultramax bulk carriers to be ordered by PGS.The collaboration involves Phases I, II, and III, encompassing Drawing Approval, Project Development, and Site Supervision. Furthermore, OSM Thome will manage the crew and technical management of the constructed vessels.PGS, established in 2023, is in the process of initiating the order for these zero-emission vessels, designed by Deltamarin in Finland.

Marlink to Provide Hybrid Network Connectivity to 100 Ships operated by Thome Group

Maritime communications specialist Marlink has signed an agreement to provide hybrid network connectivity services to at least 100 ships operated by shipmanager Thome Group. The contract will guarantee that the vessels are equipped with Marlinkā€™s high speed VSAT service as well as L-band back-up to ensure flexible guaranteed bandwidth at all times. Based in Singapore, the Thome Group provides integrated ship management services, as well as offshore management, oil and gas marine services and crewing.The company has about 200 vessels under full technical management.

Thome Opens Fleet Operations Hub in Mumbai

Marlink Helps Drive Odfjellā€™s Digital Strategy

Marlink signed an agreement with Odfjell Management AS to provide seamless access to global enterprise and crew applications across 52 vessels. Six giants in the global maritime industry have joined forces to address diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) issues.The Maritime Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Innovation Lab 2022, launched by Thome Group, Hafnia, Anglo American, RightShip, Rio Tinto, and Wilhelmsen, is an open competition for interested participants (individuals, institutions, companies, students etc.) to submit their ideas on addressing DEI in the maritime industry.Shortlisted teams will participate in the innovation lab to hone their pitches in preparation for a ā€˜Dragonā€™s Denā€™ session with industry leaders.

The Crew Change Crisis is Getting Worse

The crew change crisis that has been plaguing the maritime industry for more than a year and a half is raging on and only getting worse, data from 10 of the world's top ship managers suggests.The number of seafarers onboard vessels beyond the expiry of their contract has continued rising from 7.2% to 8.8% in the last month, and the number of seafarers onboard vessels for over 11 months has risen from 0.4% to 1%, according to the latest monthly Neptune Declaration Crew Change Indicator.Theā€¦

Relief Fund Raises $530,000 for Seafarers Impacted by COVID-19

Only three weeks after launching, a relief fund established to help seafarers and the families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic has collected $530,000 in pledges to date, nearly $400,000 of which has already been allocated to help those worst affected.The Seafarers International Relief Fund (SIRF), set up by seafarer welfare charities and the wider shipping industry, said the first three SIRF grants were enabled through The Seafarersā€™ Charityā€™s agile and established grant making processes and will provide funds to three seafarer charitiesā€¦

Thome Group, Carsten Rehder Form Ship Management JV

Singapore-base ship management firm Thome Group and German shipowner Carsten Rehder have agreed to cooperate in a joint venture to take over the ship management of the latter's owned and managed fleet of dry bulk, container and multipurpose vessels.The new company is to be called Thome Shipmanagement Germany GmbH & Co. KG with the Thome Group and Carsten Rehder as the two shareholders. Wilhelmsen Delivers 3D Printed Parts to Berge Bulk

Norway-based global maritime industry group Wilh. Wilhelmsen Holding ASA  announced that Bergeā€ÆMafadi, a Berge Bulk vessel has received the worldā€™s first commercial delivery of 3d printed scupper plugs, as part of Wilhelmsenā€™s Early Adopter Program.According to a press release, the program, where customers have exclusive access to on-demand additive manufacturing was launched by Wilhelmsenā€™s Marine Products division in December 2019. Customers include Berge Bulk, Carnival Maritime, Thome Ship Management, OSM Maritime Group, Executive Ship Management and Wilhelmsen Ship Management.ā€œWe are very excited with this milestone - completing one of the first commercial deliveries of 3D printed parts in the maritime industryā€¦

Wilhelmsen has launched an early adopter program for 3D printed marine spare parts. A strategic move by the six early adopters, Carnival Maritime, Thome Ship Management, OSM Maritime Group, Berge Bulk, Executive Ship Management and Wilhelmsen Ship Management have all signed up with Wilhelmsenā€™s Marine Products division to begin utilizing on-demand additive manufacturing.Wilhelmsen, in cooperation with Ivaldi Group, will provide spare parts on demand to the selected six customersā€™ vessels around the globe.

Saudi Tankers Among Those Hit off UAE Coast

Saudi Arabia said on Monday that two of its oil tankers were among those attacked off the coast of the United Arab Emirates and said it was an attempt to undermine the security of crude supplies amid tensions between the United States and Iran.The UAE said on Sunday that four commercial vessels were sabotaged near Fujairah emirate, one of the world's largest bunkering hubs lying just outside the Strait of Hormuz, but did not describe the nature of the attack or say who was behind it.The UAE had not given the nationalities or other details about the ownership of the four vessels. Riyadh has identified two of them as Saudi and a Norwegian company has said it owned another.

Shipping Firms Pay $1.9 Mln for Pollution Cover-up

Two shipping companies based in Egypt and Singapore will pay $1.9 million in penalties after pleading guilty in federal court to violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS) and obstruction of justice for covering up the illegal dumping of oil-contaminated bilge water and garbage into the sea. Defendants Egyptian Tanker Company and Thome Ship Management are the owner and operator of the offending vessel, the 57,920 gross ton, 809-foot long, oceangoing, oil tank ship called the M/T ETC Mena. The plea agreement was announced by Acting Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey H. Wood for the Department of Justice Environment and Natural Resources Division and Acting U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston for the Eastern District of Texas.

Radio Holland, Thome Ship Management Ink SRA Deal for 200 vessels

Thome Ship Management Pte Ltd and Radio Holland Singapore have concluded a Service Rate Agreement (SRA) covering the NavCom service and maintenance needs of its entire fleet of more than 200 vessels. Headquartered in Singapore, Thome Ship Management has worked together with Radio Holland for many years. The two companies have now taken a next step to a new format of cooperation with the SRA, which includes everything from annual radio surveys to servicing bridge equipment, to the delivery of spare parts and on-the-spot troubleshooting. Irene Yoong, Radio Holland Sales Manager Services, comments: ā€œThome Ship Management was looking for cost efficiencies in terms of managing the maintenance and repair of its global fleet.
