Recent storms that crossed the San Francisco Bay Area earlier this week left multiple vessels, docks, and barges adrift, causing navigational safety issues around the areaThree 60-foot deck barges were adrift, causing an allision with the 3rd Street Bridge at McCovey Cove leading to Mission Creek. U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco's Prevention Department was made aware of the situation and broadcasted a Notice to Mariners, noting that the area was closed to navigation. A finalized assessment of the bridge is pending the completion of an inspection by engineers.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is embarking on a new chapter in its ocean research with the construction of a state-of-the-art ship, a vessel named in honor of MBARI’s founder, David Packard. The R/V David Packard will be capable of accommodating diverse expeditions in Monterey Bay and beyond to further the institute’s mission to explore and understand our changing ocean.It will measure 50 x 12.8 m with a 3.7 m draft, designed to  support a crew of 12, plus a science crew of 18.

The crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast returned home to Astoria, Oregon in late December after making several drug busts while on patrol in international waters off the coasts of Mexico and Central America. Over the course of a 50-day counterdrug patrol in the Eastern Pacific, Steadfast crewmembers interdicted five separate vessels engaged in suspected illegal drug smuggling. During the patrol crewmembers detected and boarded a low profile vessel, a custom fabricated boat specifically built to evade law enforcement.

Coast Guard members and local agencies responded to a fishing vessel taking on water with two people aboard west of Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay Wednesday afternoon. At 1:28 p.m., Coast Guard Station Golden Gate watchstanders received a VHF-FM radio transmission on channel 16 from a person aboard a 49-foot fishing vessel taking on water. Two rescue boatcrews were launched from Station Golden Gate, and marine units were dispatched from San Francisco Fire, Tiburon Fire and Richmond Fire departments. Personnel from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers vessel, Racoon, also responded. “The rapid response by multiple agencies ensured help was on scene within minutes,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew Whitlow, boatswain’s mate at Station Golden Gate.

The cabin is outfitted with shock mitigating seating for three personnel, a generous workstation, an array of Furuno navigation equipment, Motorola and Icom communications equipment and FLIR gyro-stabilized thermal imaging equipment with a dedicated Nauticomp display screen.

R/V Tiburon added a custom built Spectre ROV capable of working depths of up to 600m. It is named “Otis”, after Otis Barton the inventor of the Bathysphere and holder of world record 4500 ft. tethered dive in 1949. “We see this as a time to concentrate our skills to the important mission of collecting important environmental data in the wake of the BP Gulf oil spill” said Tim Taylor CEO of RV Tiburon, Inc. Moose Boats Announces Fire Boat Contract Award from West Pierce Fire and Rescue. Moose Boats, a boat designer and manufacturer in the San Francisco Bay Area, has been awarded a new contract from West Pierce Fire and Rescue in University Place, WA for the construction of a M2-37 Catamaran Fire Rescue Boat. The M2-37 is a 37’-0” aluminum catamaran powered by newly introduced twin Cummins 6.7ltr 425hp turbo diesels and is propelled by Hamilton 292 water jets. The vessel will provide West Pierce Fire and Rescue with fire fighting, rescue, dive and shore landing capabilities.

Moose Boats Awarded New Contract for City of New Orleans CBRNE Fire Rescue Vessel. Moose Boats, a boat designer and manufacturer in the San Francisco Bay Area, has been awarded a new contract from the New Orleans Fire Department for the construction of a M3-36 Monohull CBRNE Fire Rescue Boat. The M3 is a new product line for Moose Boats and incorporates the builder’s established design and quality reputation in a more compact platform than the M1 and M2 Catamaran Vessels. The M3-36 is a 36’-6” aluminum monohull powered by twin Yamaha 350hp four stroke outboard engines.

Water Emergency Transportation Authority Awards Ferry Operating Contract to Blue & Gold Fleet. At its October 6 Board of Directors meeting, the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) awarded Blue & Gold Fleet ("B&GF") a five-year contract for the operation of WETA's San Francisco Bay Ferry services. San Francisco Bay Ferry, which recently assumed operation of the Alameda/Oakland and Harbor Bay Ferries, provides daily commute and excursion service between Alameda, Oakland, San Francisco, and Harbor Bay. In early 2012, San Francisco Bay Ferry plans to launch new ferry service between South San Francisco and the East Bay and to assume operation of the City of Vallejo's Baylink ferry operating between Vallejo and San Francisco.

This act contained the first statutory use of term "Revenue Cutter Service."  Previous laws referred only to "revenue cutters". 1982- Attorney General William Smith declared at a press conference that Operation Tiburon was "the most successful international marijuana interdiction effort to date."  The operation began in November, 1980, and accounted for the seizure of 95 vessels.

Residents of Corte Madera located on the northeast side of the , saw an increased emergency response activity as area responders participate in an industry-led exercise on Wednesday, October 22, 2008. The interagency exercise, sponsored by Golden Gate Ferry in coordination with Coast Guard Sector San Francisco, took place at 4 which is located off the . The exercise was designed to test the Bay Area Vessel Mutual Assistance Plan including agency emergency evacuation capabilities, and mass rescue operations, as well as the ferry system transportation infrastructure. Tiburon Divers, a commercial diving company servicing the inland and offshore sectors, has signed an agreement with CapRock Communications to outfit its entire fleet with a communications package. Under the terms of the agreement, CapRock provides Tiburon's fleet of dive vessels with Voice over IP, Internet access and wireless access points supported by 24/7 customer service and network monitoring.

On Dec. 12, the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) christened the first of its fleet of ferries, Gemini, to enhance the region’s emergency response capability and water transit network. Representative Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) and WETA Board Chair Charlene Haught Johnson performed the christening ceremony. Ms. Haught Johnson applauded the Bay Area for coming together to forge strong partnerships to enable WETA to build a fleet of ferries that are revolutionizing the ferry industry.

The San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) and the City of Alameda today announced that starting June 8, Alameda Harbor Bay ferry riders will be treated to a daily ferry commute onboard Pisces, the Bay Area’s newest ferry. Pisces’ interior design responds to Bay Area commuters' desire for convenience and comfort. The ferry has several seating options to maximize passenger comfort, plus room for 34 bicycles, 20% more capacity than similar sized ferries on the Bay. Pisces will initially be used on the afternoon Harbor Bay ferry service to San Francisco, sharing service with the Bay Breeze--the existing primary vessel for Harbor Bay.
