UK Seeks Maritime Dominance of Yore

“Britannia rules the waves” paid a glowing tribute to the maritime past of the United Kingdom. Over the past three centuries as the sun began to set on the British power, resilient U.K. with its pioneering characteristics began its voyage of transformation to become a world-class maritime services center, with one of the largest clusters of marine insurance, ship finance, law, classification societies, ship broking, education and consultancy organizations. Significantly, two factors were responsible for this change. The first being marine transport, since it was the only point of access to the British Isles, and the second was the maritime trade and naval power that have had a great impact on the maritime sector influencing the country’s economy for several centuries.

Damen Workboat Delivered to Green Marine

Marine operations company Green Marine Energy Support Services, based in Stromness, Orkney, took delivery of a Damen Multi Cat 2712 workboat for its offshore wave and tidal activities, the builder announced. The vessel’s first job was laying the moorings for and towing Green Marine’s heavy-lifting barge and the removal of the HS1000 tidal turbine for Andritz Hydro Hammerfest. New Tidal Wave Energy Device Completes Sea Trials

In the continuing quest to harvest efficient, renewable energy from the power of the world’s tides, an organization called Sustainable Marine Energy’s announced that its PLAT-O tidal energy platform has successfully completed its first field trials. Despite the tremendous power and predictability of the world’s waves and tides, efforts to successfully build and bring to market a device to harness, store and transmit power in an efficient manner have been largely unsuccessful in the commercial sense.

Red7Marine Offshore Win Rich Slew of Contracts

UK-based Red7Marine Offshore Ltd announces the award of a number of new contracts for 2013. Cable protection work has recently been awarded on the Paimpol-Brehat Tidal Energy Converter project, Brittany, France. The scope of work includes the installation of more than 100 concrete mattresses to provide additional stabilisation of the export cable connecting tidal energy devices to the shore. The scope includes a number of supporting operations with site work due to commence summer 2013. The company’s subsea cable installation expertise also continues to expand with the recent award of the export cable installation for the Biscay Marine Energy Platform project near Bilbao, Spain.

GL Garrad Hassan marked the 20th anniversary of the launch of 'Bladed' software at the recent EWEA Conference in Vienna. GL Garrad Hassan pioneered the development of design tools for wind, wave and tidal energy devices and Bladed is now recognised as the industry standard design tool for wind turbines with 450 licences held by 250 clients worldwide. consultants, Bladed has been used to analyse hundreds of turbine designs and thousands of installed turbines. Bladed was introduced in February 1993. Since then the tool has been under continuous development.
