Shipbuilding: HII Celebrates 154 Apprentice School Grads

Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) hosted commencement exercises on Saturday, April 17, 2021, for 154 graduates of the company’s Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding. The Apprentice School Approved as Higher Education Institution

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced that The Apprentice School at its Newport News Shipbuilding division has been approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia to operate as a postsecondary institution. The certification gives the school the authority to grant academic degrees, further enhancing its national reputation as the model apprenticeship program.The school plans to grant associates of applied science degrees in maritime technology in 26 disciplines…

HII Celebrates the Centennial Graduating Class

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) hosted commencement exercises on Saturday for 145 graduates of the company’s Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding. The ceremony, held at Liberty Baptist Church Worship Center in Hampton, commemorated the school’s centennial graduating class.“Graduates of the 100th class of the Apprentice School, you know what it takes to do this amazing and important and difficult work,” said retired Adm. John Richardson, the former chief of naval operations, who delivered the commencement address.

The Apprentice School at Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding division celebrated its 100-year anniversary just last month. That's worthy of inclusion in this year's MN100 list, for more than one reason. Certainly, this fine school deserves to be mentioned among our very best 100 organizations for this year. That 100-year anniversary is bigger news than you might otherwise think. Accordingly, the company held a ceremony to mark the day – July 1, 1919 – when the school was established.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) hosted commencement exercises on Saturday, March 2, 2019, for 157 graduates of The Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding. The apprenticeship is a rigorous four- to eight-year program designed to develop the next generation of shipyard leaders. The Apprentice School, which first opened in 1919 with 126 apprentices, is celebrating its centennial anniversary this year. Senator Kaine Tours NNS Apprentice School

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) apprises that it has hosted Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., for a tour of The Apprentice School at the company's Newport News Shipbuilding division. The visit provided Kaine an opportunity to meet with shipyard and Apprentice School leaders and discuss the importance of Career Technical Education (CTE) programs as an alternative to traditional four-year colleges. Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin and Newport News Shipbuilding Vice President of Operations Danny Hunley accompanied the senator during the tour, which showcased the facility's eight computer labs, two videoconferencing classrooms, physics lab and gymnasium. During the tour, Kaine took the opportunity to interact with teachers and students in drafting and physics classes.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) hosted Virginia Secretary of Education Anne Holton Wednesday for a tour of The Apprentice School at the company's Newport News Shipbuilding division. Huntington Ingalls Industries hosted commencement exercises for the company's Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding. The graduation, held at the Liberty Baptist Church Worship Center in Hampton, celebrated 137 apprentices representing 18 trades and four advanced programs. Danny Hunley, vice president of operations at Newport News and an Apprentice School graduate, served as the keynote speaker. He shared lessons learned during his 40 years of service at the shipyard and reminded the future shipbuilders of the importance of their daily work.

Huntington Ingalls Industries informs it will host commencement exercises for The Apprentice School's graduating class of 2013. Danny Hunley, Newport News Shipbuilding's vice president of operations and Apprentice School graduate, will provide the keynote address on Saturday, 29, February 2014. The Apprentice School accepts about 250 apprentices per year. The school offers four- to eight-year, tuition-free apprenticeships in 19 trades and eight optional advanced programs. Apprentices work a regular 40-hour week and are paid for all work, including time spent in academic classes.

I have been here at BAE Systems going on seven years now. I was just doing odd jobs out of high school – Hardee’s, driving jobs like delivering pizzas – anything that was making money. I have a cousin, who at the time was an electrician apprentice, and he was telling me about the shipyard. I’d never heard of a shipyard even though I drove past it all the time.

NNS Employee Named Outstanding Apprentice 2012

Newport News Shipbuilding employee Greg Hoefflin has been named an Outstanding Apprentice for 2012 by the Virginia Apprenticeship Council. Hoefflin, a 2012 graduate of The Apprentice School at NNS, is the ninth Apprentice School graduate to receive the honor since it was first awarded in 1998. The Virginia Apprenticeship Council, in association with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry, sponsors the annual awards program to honor outstanding apprentices who represent the best of what apprenticeship has to offer. Apprentices are nominated by their sponsoring organizations.

Newport News Shipbuilding's Apprentice School, 92nd Anniversary

Huntington Ingalls Industries will celebrate the 92nd anniversary of its Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School on July1. The school has grown from three instructors and 126 apprentices in 1919 to more than 100 faculty and 750 apprentices today. The Apprentice School is expected to award its 10,000th diploma later this year. Bay Diesel & Generator announced the promotion of John Small to the position of Inside Sales Coordinator. Small joined Bay Diesel & Generator in 2008 as a field service technician. After an exemplary performance in technical training and product orientation, Small was asked to join the Bay Diesel & Generator Sales team. Small's change in position coincides with a change in his career path, as he begins to pursue a degree in Business Management from Tidewater Community College.

Va School to Introduce Training Center in 2008

According to the Daily Press, Tidewater Community College on Wednesday announced a new training center designed to help alleviate anticipated critical workplace shortages in shipbuilding and other waterfront related work. The Maritime and Transportation Center, set to open in 2008, will operate out of a building at the community college's forthcoming campus in Portsmouth -- training workers in everything from welding to truck driving, from computer aided design to port security. Shipyard workers are expected to be in great demand over the coming decades. Baby boomers are approaching retirement age even as Navy shipbuilding is going strong with an entirely new aircraft carrier class at Northrop Grumman Newport News and continued submarine building there.
