SAAM Towage Taps Markey for Winch Retrofit Project

Markey Machine won a first-ever contract from SAAM Towage to retrofit the controls on a Timberland towing winch aboard the Point Valiant, a tug based in Vancouver, B.C.SAAM first outlined the project to Markey last May, then hired Sentinel Survey, Markey’s after-market service division, to undertake on-site inspection of the winch. Following inspection, Markey offered its Class I winch-control package, and SAAM responded with an order near the end of December. Okawa Joins Hawboldt’s Marine Cranes Division

Hawboldt Industries Ltd., a manufacturer of deck equipment and a member of the Timberland Group of Companies, announced the hiring of Reed Okawa as Business Development Manager, Marine Crane Division. Paul Phillips, General Sales Manager at Hawboldt industries said, “Reed brings over 35 years of experience in crane design sales and service to Hawboldt . . . Okawa joined Hawboldt in late January and is based near Seattle. Okawa will also be able to assist customers with Hawboldt’s core product lines, which include ROV, AUV and subsea drill launch and recovery systems, commercial deck equipment (anchor and mooring winches) and oceanographic products. Hawboldt manufactures cranes from 2 to 150 ton capacity in fixed, knuckle and telescopic versions.

Research Winches for R/V Maria S. Seven special winches were supplied by Hatlapa in December 2003 after being tested and demonstrated in the factory. These winches are intended for the new research vessel Maria S. Merian, which will support the vessel Polarstern during operations in the Arctic. Hatlapa has escorted this project for five years, during which time the design of the winches was formed in close cooperation with the order principal BAW (Bundesanstalt für Wasserbau) and the shipyard Krögerwerft in Rendsburg. One specialty is the combination of friction and storage winch for handling the very long and relatively thin measuring cables. The advantage is that the sensitive and expensive research ropes can be spooled on the storage winch free from load.

Washburn & Doughty Wins Tug Contract

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. signed a contract to build a 92 x 32-ft. Z-Drive Tug for the Providence Steamboat Company. Providence Steamboat Company, located in Providence, RI, operates tugboats on Narragansett Bay and adjacent southeast New England waters. Engaged primarily in vessel assist work, the company has six tugs with two under construction. The vessel currently being built by Washburn & Doughty is Providence Steamboat’s first Z Drive Tug. Delivery is scheduled for December 2004. The new tug will be powered by two Caterpillar 3516HD main engines each rated at 2,500 hp @ 1,600 rpm. The propulsion units will be Rolls-Royce Aquamaster model US 205 Z Drives with NiBrAl 90.5-in. propellers and Kort nozzles lined with stainless steel.

Blount-Barker Delivers Tug

The 85-ft. tug, Sea Bull built by Blount-Barker Shipbuilding was delivered to its port of Bayonne, NJ, on April 21, 2002. The vessel will be used for marine towing in the greater New York area. The Sea Bull is powered by a pair of 12-cylinder, 3512B diesel engines, which produce 1,100 hp at 1,200 rpm. The Caterpillar engines run through Twin Disc 4.03:1 reduction/reversing gears which turn Aquamet shafts and two Kahlenburg, stainless, 4-blade 76-in. propellers. The vessel can maintain a free running speed of 12 knots. The Sea Bull has a Timberland Almon Johnson electric towing winch and a pair of Caterpillar 65 kW diesel generators to supply service power for the winch and other on-board uses. The tug is rated for forward bollard pull of 25 tons.

Timberland to Supply Equipment for Tugs

Two Panama Canal Authority tugs, being built by Saint John Shipbuilding at East Isle Shipyard in Georgetown, Prince Edward Island, will be outfitted with deck machinery supplied by Timberland Equipment. Saint John Shipbuilding won the contract for two new 4,000 hp tugs, along with an option for two more, in October, 2000. Timberland's scope of supply consists of two Series 651A Hawser winches, one Series 353H, 24-in. Hydraulic Capstan and a 160 hp diesel/hydraulic power unit per ship-set. On the bow, two Timberland Series 651A Hawser winches, each with a line pull rating of 8,000 lbs. at 230 FPM mid-drum. The drums are designed for underwound configuration. Located aft is a Timberland Series 353H hydraulic capstan, complete with a 24-in. diameter cast steel head.

W&D Signs Contract with Wilmington Tug

Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine signed a contract to build a 4,200 hp Z-Drive Tug for Wilmington Tug of Wilmington, Delaware. Designed by Robert Allan Ltd., this ASD 25/55 Class Tug will measure 80 x32-ft. and admeasure less than 200 gt. It will be used primarily for ship docking; however, an extended keel will allow for operation as an escort tug in the indirect mode. Wilmington Tug operates five tugs and in 1977 became the first operator in North America to operate a Z Drive Tug. Wilmington Tug's newest vessel will be the ninth Z Drive Tug built by Washburn & Doughty since the Fort Bragg was constructed for Cape Fear Towing in 1998. Two Detroit Diesel model 12V4000 main engines rated at 2,100 hp at 1,800 rpm will power the vessel.

Deck Equipment Completed

Timberland Equipment Ltd./Almon Johnson Ltd., in cooperation with TUGZ International, has completed the deck equipment for TUGZ Z-1, Z-2 and Z-3. Each new tug has been supplied with a Johnson Type Series "650" Double Drum Hawser Winch, designed to store 450 ft. of 2.25 in. diameter synthetic rope and brake holding of 350,000 lbs. On the aft of each tug will be a Johnson Type Series "651" Single Drum Towing Winch with a storage capacity of 2,000 ft. of 2 in. diameter IWRC wire rope with a linepull of 60,000 lbs. and a brake holding of 300,000 lbs. Both winches will run on a Johnson Type Electro-Hydraulic Power Unit mounted below-deck.
