Wärtsilä welcomed cadets from the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College to its Trieste factory during the school's summer sea term Italian port stop in June. The students use the summer sea term to gain practical experience on board the SUNY Maritime training ship, the Empire State VI. Upon arrival in Trieste, the Wärtsilä Italy management team welcomed the group of close to 600, which in addition to the cadets, included the crew, faculty from SUNY Maritime College, as well as its president, Rear Adm. Michael Alfultis. This visit marked a return to Trieste for SUNY Maritime as the group was also hosted by Wärtsilä in 2013.

Baltic Sea cruise ferry operator, Viking Line, has entered into a new five-year contract with Marlink continuing its existing agreement for the supply and operation of its satellite communications and the enhancement of its Sealink(TM) systems onboard the company's fleet of ferries. CAE's marine controls division has won contracts worth around C$5 million to supply its automation systems for installation on a number of commercial ships, two French naval ships and a U.K. Royal Navy research/support vessel. For the French navy, CAE Valmarine will build integrated safety management systems (ISMS) for French shipyard Direction des Constructions Navales (DCN), which will install the equipment on the two Mistral-class landing helicopter docks (LHD), being built to commercial standards. The first vessel (Mistral) is to be fitted in March 2005. Installation on the Tonnerre is to be completed in December 2005. CAE has already supplied the integrated automation system and emergency shutdown system for the two vessels.

TM Systems has been awarded a contract worth $2.1 million to supply two Stabilized Glide Slope Indicator (SGSI) systems to National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO). The SGSI systems will be used by NASSCO on ships being constructed for the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). These systems are becoming a critical component for the Navy as they allow helicopter pilots to land safely on ships at sea at a time when the Navy needs increased flexibility to engage in military maneuvers from international waters rather than continuing to depend on foreign states to provide landing permissions or allow U.S. military installations.
