Larsen Named Director at CLIA
Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) announced the establishment of a Global Ports Committee as well as new regional committees in the Americas, Australasia and Asia in addition to the regional committee already operating in Europe. CLIA is now focusing more on engaging directly with port communities around the world both on operational and strategic issues. Port partners will now have increased opportunities to engage with CLIA member lines through this newly established Committee structure.
Oncam Grandeye to Host Panel Discussion at Cruise Ship Miami
Oncam Grandeye’s panel discussion at last year's Cruise Ship Miami explored standards for port and cruise ship security & surveillance, discussing, among other topics, the importance of surveillance systems and security technologies in the prevention of crimes at sea and how close cooperation and integrated information sharing between cruise ships and ports contribute to situational awareness and improved security and safety for passengers. This year, the company is hosting another topical discussion on security issues regarding terminals in-port and onboard. This session will look at the challenges of achieving consistency in terminal offerings and how they can most effectively be met.

SUNY Maritime Sails to the Rescue
Sailing along the Atlantic coastline from New York , the Empire State rounded Florida , dodged Hurricane Ophelia and cut a path along the same waters that Hurricane Katrina had sliced in its rampant urgency. On board were faculty and staff from SUNY Maritime College , which operates the 565-foot training ship. The Empire State is owned by the federal government, which activated the vessel after Hurricane Katrina. The ship's operators are trading their normal lives to provide disaster relief, leaving their own homes to provide one for the homeless. The Empire State is now serving as a floating hotel for uprooted oil rig workers who are working 24 hours a day to repair a New Orleans oil refinery.
