Polaris Bunkered in Finland

The world’s first LNG-fueled icebreaker, Polaris, received liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel in January from the Pori LNG import terminal and in February from the Manga LNG terminal located in the Röyttä Harbor in Tornio, Finland. The commercial use of the Tornio import terminal begins this year, said a press release from Nordic gas company Gasum.The gas and fuel market of Northern Finland will diversify as the commercial use of the Tornio import terminal begins this year. Access to LNG is an important competitiveness factor for current industrial operators in the area as well as for the Port of Tornio. Skangas Inks LNG Bunker Deal with Gothia Tanker Alliance

Skangas entered into an agreement with parts of the Gothia Tanker Alliance to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel.The new agreement comprises current as well as new vessels with LNG propulsion soon to come, said a press release from the supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the Nordic markets.The main Swedish shipping companies that will get the advantage of the supply agreement with Skangas are Furetank Rederi AB, Erik Thun AB and Rederi AB Älvtank. These shipping companies have invested in total six new LNG fueled vessels and together with the existing Fure West they are all jointly operated by the Gothia Tanker Alliance.The Swedish Shipowners’ Association is actively contributing to reduce any negative environmental impact of the shipping industry.

Polaris, the newest icebreaker of the Finnish icebreaking service company Arctia, set out from Katajanokka, Helsinki, for icebreaking duty in the Bothnian Bay and arrived January 10 for bunkering at the Skangas liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Pori, where the vessel received approximately 700 m3 of LNG. “Polaris arrived via Utö through the Turku Archipelago to the Skangas LNG terminal in the Tahkoluoto harbor in Pori. The Pori terminal is located by a deep and wide fairway, so it was easy to access and we kept on schedule.

Megastar's First LNG bunkering at Skangas Pori Terminal

To be completed at the Meyer Turku shipyard in late January, Tallink’s new liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered fast ferry M/S Megastar was bunkered with LNG for the first time at the newly opened Skangas Pori LNG terminal on January 4. Her maiden voyage will take place from Tallinn to Helsinki in late January. The ferry is fuelled with the cleanest available marine fuel LNG and is compliant with the new, stricter emission regulations of Emission Control Areas (ECAs) such as the Baltic Sea. The hull with unequalled efficiency was designed exclusively for Megastar by Meyer Turku Shipyard. M/S Megastar is 212 meters long and can accommodate 2,800 passengers. The fast ferry will operate between Helsinki and Tallinn at a service speed of 27 knots.

Honeywell to Automate Finland's First LNG Terminal

Honeywell has announced that it has received a contract to supply its Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) automation controls and tank gauging systems for Finland’s first LNG import terminal. The new terminal will efficiently supply natural gas to marine vessels and industrial facilities in Finland, helping to replace other fuels that have higher emissions. Honeywell’s technology will help to efficiently supply natural gas to marine vessels and industrial facilities in Finland from Skangas Oy’s LNG facility in Pori. In addition, Honeywell’s Enterprise Buildings Integrator (EBI) will connect and power comfort, safety and security systems within the LNG terminal itself.

Skangass Builds LNG Terminal in Pori, Finland

With investment support from the Finnish Government of 185 million NOK Skangass has decided to build a new import terminal for LNG. The terminal will be completed in 2016. Skangass plans to create an efficient LNG logistics chain in the Pori area. When the terminal is ready in Autumn 2016 it will have a capacity of 30,000 cubic meters. Skangass has already selected the main contractor and suppliers for the project. ”The investment decision will result in speedy progress in the construction project. It is highly important that the Pori terminal is completed on schedule and that we can launch deliveries to our existing and new customers.

Gasum Boosts LNG Network with Skangass Deal

Reuters - Finnish gas company Gasum is to acquire 51 percent of Norwegian Skangass's distribution operations from Lyse Corporation as it seeks to improve the efficiency of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) network. Gasum said on Monday that the deal, which will make it the largest Nordic operator in the LNG market, is also intended to ensure that it benefits from tighter European Union emissions regulations. Various new regulations on sulphur emissions in the shipping sector will come into place for much of the North and Baltic Sea as well as the United States and Canada in 2015, which has driven interest in alternative fuels to diesel.
