McDonald Named ABS Chief Operating Officer

John McDonald will become ABS Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer as Tony Nassif has announced his plans to retire on December 31, 2021.As part of the company’s succession planning process, McDonald will assume the head operations role on July 26, 2021. Celebrating 25 years of service with ABS this year, McDonald joined ABS in 1996 as a surveyor and served in various frontline operational roles in Korea, the Northern Europe and Africa Region and the Central Region for the former Americas Division.

ABS Reaches an IHM Century with Seaspan

Classification society ABS reports it has scheduled its 100th Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) Certification for Seaspan Ship Management, 98% of which are remote surveys.ABS says it is on course to ultimately certify more than 100 vessels for the world's largest containership lessor as part of a huge increase in demand for ABS remote surveys of around 300% since the start of the global COVID-19 pandemic.“COVID-19 has provided the maritime industry with unprecedented challenges. ABS Spearheads Offshore Standardization JIP

Classification society ABS convened industry partners at the Offshore Technology Conference on Wednesday, May 4, to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) establishing a unified joint industry project (JIP) for standardization. The goal of the JIP, which includes participants from Korean shipyards, operators, drilling contractors, engineering companies and classification societies, is to develop offshore design standards that will help to improve safety and increase efficiency for offshore projects. ABS COO Tony Nassif praised participants for their willingness to join this milestone JIP, stepping out of their comfort zone to enter into this unique collaborative effort.

ABS Names New Chief Engineer

Montaruli steps up at ABS as technical engineering authority. ABS, a provider of classification to the global marine and offshore industries, announced the appointment of Bret Montaruli as Vice President and Chief Engineer. In his new role, Montaruli will be responsible for overseeing the interpretation, application and compliance with the ABS Rules across all ABS Engineering offices worldwide. Montaruli steps into his new position February 15, 2016 to replace Jim Gaughan, who is retiring from ABS after 30 years of service.

ABS to Class Maersk's Mega Ships

Maritime shipping and offshore classification services provider ABS has been selected to class 11 newbuild ultra-large containerships (ULCs) for Maersk Line A/S of Denmark, the classification society announced today. At 19,630 TEU, Maersk’s second generation of Triple-E containerships will larger than the first, and were ordered from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) of South Korea last month in a deal that includes options to build up to six additional vessels. ABS notes that it classed 20 of Maersk’s Triple-E containerships from the same shipyard four years ago.

ABS Group Concludes Acquisition of Safetec Nordic AS

ABS Group of Companies, Inc. concluded its acquisition of Safetec Nordic AS, with a signing ceremony attended by senior ABS, ABS Group and Safetec management in Trondheim, Norway, on January 5, 2012. Wiernicki to Become CEO of ABS

ABS President and Chief Operating Officer Christopher J. Wiernicki will assume the duties of Chief Executive Officer of ABS following the classification society’s annual meeting in April 2011. Robert D. Somerville, currently Chairman and CEO of ABS, will relinquish the CEO responsibilities while remaining Chairman of both ABS and the ABS Group of Companies. Wiernicki, a member of the Board of Directors of ABS, has been working closely with Somerville for the last four years in his position as President and COO. The role of CEO will be in addition to Wiernicki’s existing responsibilities.
