Empty Shipyard: "Hyundai Town" Grapples with Uncertain Future

Hyundai has outsized influence over town's economy, population; Ulsan could be South Korea's Rust Belt in the making.When Lee Dong-hee came to Ulsan to work for Hyundai Heavy Industries five years ago, shipyards in the city known as Hyundai Town operated day and night and workers could make triple South Korea's annual average salary.But the 52-year-old was laid off in January, joining some 27,000 workers and subcontractors who lost their jobs at Hyundai Heavy between 2015 and 2017 as ship orders plunged.To support their family, Lee's wife took a minimum wage job at a Hyundai Motor supplier.

Damen Takes Second in Maritime & Aviation Sector in MT500 Rankings

Damen Shipyards Group has achieved second place in the maritime & aviation sector in this year’s MT500 rankings of the top 500 companies and institutions in the Netherlands. It also came twentieth out of 500 in the overall ranking, its best ever result.In the ratings breakdown, Damen achieved the full five stars for product leadership and employment practises. The winner in the maritime & aviation category was national airline KLM, with the Port of Rotterdam coming third.The MT500 is the result of an annual survey of business decision makers that asks them to assess and rank companies in the same and related sectors as their own businesses on product leadership, customer focus and excellent execution.

ONGC bags Dun & Bradstreet Corporate Excellence Award - 2014

ONGC was honored with the prestigious corporate award – ‘The Dun & Brandstreet Corporate Excellence Award’ for its stellar management and leadership on May 28,2014. ONGC received the award for excellence in the Oil and Gas Production sector. Mr A K Jain, Executive Director, Chief- Offshore Engineering Services, received the award on the behalf of the organization. In all, there were 46 sectors which were recognized for their excellence and these were chosen among the top 500 companies of India, by the primary yardstick of their contribution to India’s GDP. These 500 companies contribute to over 20 percent of the nation’s GDP and are the pillars of economic progress of the country.

Chinese Shipbuilder Plans Next Component of 'Oceanaut' Station

China Shipbuilding Industry Corp. (CSIC) is developing a manned submersible for dives to 4,500 meters (14,764 ft). The move comes as part of a greater plan for the nation to eventually build a deep sea station where submersibles can dock and oceanauts can work. CSIC, builders of the Jiaolong manned submersible, which made record dives to more than 7,000 meters in the Pacific Ocean's Mariana Trench, said that the submersible has returned to its test base since completing deep sea diving missions, and it will be handed over for use after maintenance. The vessel will be used to conduct scientific research next year, the Beijing-based state-owned company said.
