World Maritime University Graduates Class of '23

On 28 October, the maritime leaders of tomorrow - World Maritime University (WMU) class of 2023 - graduated. The WMU 2023 graduating class includes 283 graduates from 71 countries, including a record of 99 women graduates.WMU President, Professor Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr., delivered welcome remarks. As a WMU graduate himself, President Mejia reflected on the power of the WMU experience and how it affects the way one thinks, works, plans, and interacts. “You have acquired information that you did not possess before you enrolled here," he said.

Arntzen Joins World Maritime Day Risk Management Panel

John Denholm Takes Over BIMCO Presidency

The new president of BIMCO, John Denholm, has identified environmental pressures facing the shipping industry as some of its most significant current challenges as he embarks upon his two year term. Speaking in Paris, as he took over the presidency of the shipping organization from Yudhishthir Khatau, Mr. The third BIMCO President from the Glasgow family shipping company, Mr. Denholm said that the challenges currently being faced by the industry are “more difficult and more complex” than those of the past.

Change of Guard at BIMCO

BIMCO has announced that its new Secretary General/CEO to succeed Mr Torben C. Skaanild on his retirement later this year will be Mr Angus R. Frew, currently Chief Executive of the UK Chamber of Shipping. The appointment of Mr Frew was unanimously approved last week by the BIMCO Executive Committee at its meeting in Shanghai. It is expected that Mr Frew, who will be relocating to Denmark, will take up his appointment on 1st October 2013. Mr Skaanild will continue in a support role to the new Secretary General, and the incoming President of BIMCO, for a period of six months thereafter.

VAdm Salerno to be BIMCO’s US Liaison Officer

BIMCO said that the organisation’s new US Liaison Officer is to be Vice Admiral Brian Salerno, who has retired from the United States Coast Guard as its Deputy Commandant for Operations in USCG Headquarters, Washington DC. He will join BIMCO on 1 August 2012. Vice Admiral Salerno took up his final USCG appointment in May 2010, following assignments as the Assistant Commandant for Marine Safety, Security and Stewardship. He has also served as the Assistant Commandant for Policy and Planning, and as the Director of Inspections and Compliance at Coast Guard Headquarters.

Industry Asks IMO to Require Weighing of Containers

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has received a formal proposal co-sponsored by a broad array of industry organizations, labor, and governments to require loaded containers to be weighed to determine their actual weight. The proposal was submitted by Denmark, The Netherlands, the United States, BIMCO, the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), and the World Shipping Council (WSC).
