Columbia Shipmanagement Receives DNV GL Certification

DNV GL has confirmed that Columbia Shipmanagement complies with the highest standards in energy and safety management. Torsten Schramm, President at DNV GL – Maritime, recently presented the ISO certification for the standards ISO 50001:2011 and OHSAS 18001:2007 to Carsten Sommerhage, Director of Columbia Shipmanagement (Deutschland) GmbH, at the shipping company’s offices in Hamburg. “These certifications highlight our efforts to perform a systematic energy management as well as maintaining the highest levels of health and safety through our company. At Columbia, we pursue an integrated strategy to incorporate health and safety into all units of our company,” says Carsten Sommerhage. “Columbia holds the protection of the environment and natural resources as extremely important.

Hamburg Port to Implement Green Tech

DNV GL has signed a letter of intent with the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA). Claudia Flecken, Member of the HPA Executive Board, and Torsten Schramm, President of DNV GL – Maritime, agreed to join forces in boosting the sustainability of the existing HPA fleet and all new acquisitions. “This letter of intent is another building block in our strategy of setting Hamburg’s harbour on a sustainable course,” says Jens Meier, Chairman of the HPA Executive Board. “We are delighted to know that DNV GL is working alongside us as a strong partner and independent advisor, supporting us every step of the way with their expertise,” Meier continues. Ship Emissions & Efficiency Agenda, GL North American Meeting

The introduction of new emissions control areas (ECA) off the coastal waters of the US and Canada promise great changes for shipping in the region. regulations coloured many of the topics discussed at the North American Committee of Germanischer Lloyd (GL), which met at the Hotel Delta in Quebec City this week. The Committee examined such topics as GL's activities, both globally and in the Americas, ship efficiency, the rising importance of natural gas for the maritime industry, the technical challenges facing shipping in reducing emissions and upcoming regulations. The classifications society Germanischer Lloyd (GL) rewarded three young engineers for their outstanding diploma theses. For the 2010 Award engineering students were asked to submit theses on “Innovative Ideas for Increasing the Energy Efficiency of Ships”. Gas as ship fuel was the topic of the March 18 GL First Class Exchange Forum which highlighted GL's approach towards the environmental concerns of the maritime industry.
