Fire Breaks Out Aboard 80-year-old Great Lakes Freighter

A fire broke out aboard a Canadian-registered bulk carrier transiting on Lake Erie near Pelee Island in the overnight hours on Tuesday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.The fire, which originated in the engine room of the 80-year-old laker Cuyahoga, is said to have been contained, with no injuries reported.U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, TowBoatUS and the Canadian Coast Guard responded the incident.The 664-foot-long self discharging bulk carrier is operated by Lower Lakes Towing…

Fishing Vessel Sinks in New Jersey

The U.S. Coast Guard said it is monitoring the salvage of a partially-sunken commercial fishing vessel in Manasquan Inlet, N.J.Watchstanders in the Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay command center received notification at 2 a.m. Saturday that the 44-foot fishing vessel Miss Kathleen allided with the northern Manasquan Inlet jetty and was taking on water with three people and a dog aboard.The Miss Kathleen’s captain intentionally grounded the vessel on Dog Beach, about 20 yards outside the channel.

One Person Missing After Boat Capsized

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for one person who ended up in the Pungo River near Hobucken, N.C. after a boat capsized. The 21-foot TowBoatUS vessel was towing a 47-foot recreational boat when the lead vessel capsized near the river entrance Thursday morning. Officials say and they are now searching the water for a 45-year-old TowBoatUS captain reported to be wearing coveralls, rubber boots and a lifejacket. SeaPro FourStroke Making Gains in the Commercial Market

Mercury Marine’s family of SeaPro FourStroke outboard engines is suited for high-hour applications and harsh environments, according to the manufacturer, who said the engines are gaining popularity within the commercial marketplace. The line’s latest commercial marine endorsement comes from TowBoatUS, operator of more than 600 boats in the U.S., who is investing in Mercury SeaPro outboards on some of its fleet, including one vessel in Ft. Myers, Fla. “Having Mercury’s on the back, you never have to worry about breaking down,” said Captain Dan Medina of TowBoatUS.

Man Rescued From Sinking Yacht in Wrightsville Beach, NC

The Coast Guard rescued a 59-year-old man Saturday from a yacht taking on water in Masonboro Inlet. A 29-foot Response Boat-Small (RBS) crew from Station Wrightsville Beach received a mayday call at 9:37 a.m. while on patrol. The 60-foot yacht Somewhere in Time was taking on water with one man aboard after the yacht stuck a rock jetty. The RBS crew arrived on scene at 9:40 a.m. The crew transferred the man and returned to the station with no reported injuries. The Somewhere in Time sank and TowBoat U.S. has been notified.

USCG Rescues Injured Woman from NC Sailboat

The Coast Guard medevaced an injured woman from a grounded sailboat Sunday just east of Seagate. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina in Wilmington received a call at approximately 3:15 p.m., reporting a 38-foot Sundancer sailboat ran aground with a man, woman and two children aboard about one mile south of Bradley Creek near Money Island. A crew aboard a 25-foot Response Boat-Small was launched from Coast Guard Station Wrightsville Beach. A good Samaritan with friends of the grounded family arrived on scene and transferred the children aboard his boat. The Coast Guard RBS crew arrived on scene and found the man waiting with the woman. The woman suffered a head injury, so the Coast Guard crew placed the woman in a stokes litter and brought her aboard their response boat.

Boater Rescued from Sailboat Blaze

The U.S. Coast Guard assisted with the rescue of a boater Monday after the man's 33-foot sailboat caught fire five miles west of Windmill Point in the Chesapeake Bay. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads received a VHF-FM channel 16 broadcast from Brown at approximately 10:40 a.m., stating his sailboat was on fire. Watchstanders were unable to maintain communications with Brown after the initial broadcast. A good Samaritan contacted the Coast Guard watchstanders and reported they had the burning sailboat in sight.

USCG Rescues Fisherman off Massachusetts

A fisherman was rescued by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) after his 40-foot fishing vessel became caught in the surf on the Chatham Bar in Chatham, Massachusetts, Wednesday. USCG Watchstanders at Sector Southeast New England received a notification from a good Samaritan informing that the fishing vessel Never Enough was stuck in waves and needed assistance. Coast Guard Station Chatham rescue crews arrived on seen with two 42-foot fast response boats to assist. The Chatham Harbor Master also responded.

The U.S. Coast Guard is monitoring salvage attempts Wednesday of the Bald Head Island Ferry Adventure, which ran aground Tuesday in the vicinity of Battery Island near Southport, N.C. Personnel from Bald Head Island Transportation attempted to refloat the Adventure at approximately 10:30 a.m. Wednesday during high tide without success. The owner of Bald Head Island Transportation is working to submit a salvage plan of the Adventure for Coast Guard approval before any additional action is taken.

The U.S. Coast Guard and partner agencies are responding to a ferry grounding which reportedly caused multiple injuries after the Bald Head Island Ferry Adventure ran aground Tuesday in the vicinity of Battery Island near Southport, N.C. Likely Distress Hoax Call: Coastguard Seek Information

The Coast Guard is investigating a possible hoax call after multiple Coast Guard assets and partner agencies responded to a distress call that was made via VHF-FM channel 16, Sunday at approximately 2:45 a.m. near Beaufort, N.C. As part of this investigation, the Coast Guard is seeking the public’s assistance to identify the caller or provide additional information. Coast Guard Sector North Carolina Command Center watchstanders received a mayday call Sunday via VHF- Channel 16.

Fuel to be Removed from Sunken Boat in S.C.

The U.S. Coast Guard contracted the removal of any fuel or hazardous substances that may be aboard the 65-foot motor vessel Wanderer Monday, after the vessel sank in the Intracoastal Waterway at Osprey Marina in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Saturday morning. Personnel at Coast Guard Sector Charleston were notified of the sunken vessel and directed pollution responders to investigate further. The vessel Wanderer was found partially submerged at the pier and was actively sheening diesel fuel. The responsible party made initial efforts to mitigate the spread of pollution to the local waterways by having an absorbent boom deployed around the vessel and dock. Horry County Fire and Rescue and Towboat US recovered or removed a total of seven 55-gallon drums and two 50-gallon fuel tanks from the vessel.

Coast Guard, Good Samaritan Rescue Three From Capsized Boat

The Coast Guard and a good Samaritan rescued three people Sunday after the 15-foot boat the three boaters were on capsized in Pamlico Sound near Avon, N.C. The boat's operator contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders at approximately 4:48 p.m., stating he and a passenger were clinging to the overturned boat and one person was floating in the water. Sector North Carolina watchstanders dispatched a crew aboard a 25-foot Response Boat - Small from Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet and an MH-60 Jayhawk crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., to assist. The RB-S crew arrived on scene at 6:09 p.m. and rescued one man in the water who was holding onto a buoyant boat seat while a good Samaritan aboard a recreational boat rescued the two remaining boaters.

Capt. Steven Moore, a former hired captain with the on-the-water towing company TowBoatUS Lake Lewisville, has purchased the business from his former boss, Capt. Jay Nunnally, who will remain with the company as a towing captain. Moore, who has boated on the lake for 30 years, is US Coast Guard licensed and carries a Masters 50-ton with commercial assistance towing certification. Much like an auto club for boaters, BoatUS offers on-the-water towing plans for freshwater boaters and anglers for just $58 a year, which includes BoatUS or BoatUS Angler membership.

Coast Guard Rescue Mariners near Nasketucket Bay

Coast Guard crews rescued two mariners from a sinking vessel in Nasketucket Bay, four miles southeast of Fairhaven, Mass., Sunday. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England watchstanders received notification that a 20-foot fishing vessel was taking on water at 7:30 p.m. A Coast Guard Station Woods Hole 41-foot rescue boat crew and a MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod responded immediately. Local authorities including Fairhaven Harbor Master and Fire Rescue, New Bedford Marine Police and Towboat U.S. assisted in the search. The rescue helicopter crew located the mariners one mile from the last reported position and hoisted the two mariners from the water. The mariners were transported to Air Station Cape Cod where emergency medical services were waiting.
