Torqeedo is supplying electric propulsion systems for a fleet of 15 new passenger excursion boats recently delivered to Vinpearl’s newest resort development at Hoi An, Vietnam.The nine-meter FRP displacement craft, built by Song Lo Shipbuilding in Nha Trang, are powered by Torqeedo Deep Blue 80 inboard electric motors with BMW i3 lithium batteries. “We are very happy with the performance of the Deep Blue system for these boats,” said Nguyen Van Thanh, Director of Song Lo Shipbuilding Company. “They are very quiet and provide a smooth ride.

Tanker Rescues Castaway in South China Sea

Mitsui O.S.K. Vietnamese Boat Collides with Hong Kong Cargo Ship

Hong Kong-flagged cargo ship, Rich Better, collided with and sank Vietnamese squid boat BD 96660 in the East Vietnam Sea on August 2, 2016. According to Tuoi Tre News, six Vietnamese sailors are safe and being taken to mainland China to await pick-up by Vietnam’s authorities. The Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) confirmed the six aboard boat BD 96660, which was hit and submerged by Hong Kong cargo ship Rich Better in the East Vietnam Sea, had been rescued by the Hong Kong vessel and were on the way to Shanghai. According to the Vietnam MRCC, Rich Better collided with the Vietnamese boat at coordinates 12.17oN 110.38oE, 85 nautical miles east off Nha Trang City in south-central Vietnam, at around 9:00 pm on Tuesday while the former was on its way to Shanghai.

On Saturday, April 23, General Dynamics NASSCO hosted a christening ceremony for the second Jones Act ECO Class tanker for American Petroleum Tankers (APT) under construction at the company's shipyard in San Diego. Barge Collision Spill Impacts Houston Ship Channel

A section of a key Gulf Coast waterway was shut after two barges collided Monday, setting one afire and possibly spilling a gasoline additive near the entrance to the Houston Ship Channel, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), which runs between barrier islands and the coast of the U.S. mainland in the Gulf of Mexico, was shut from where it intersects the Houston Ship Channel to Mile Market 350 on the ICW. The Houston Ship Channel itself, which supplies the nation's busiest petrochemical port, remained open after the collision shortly after 1 a.m. local time (0600 GMT). Early media reports erroneously said a channel section had been closed, but it was unaffected.

Shipyard to be Established in South Thailand

YKP-FM Global Shipyard Co Ltd to develop a workboat repair & maintenance facility in Kantang, Trang Province, Thailand. Freight Management Holdings Bhd (FMH) is buying a 25% stake in a Thai shipyard for RM2.5 million cash. The logistics group having earlier entered into an agreement with YKP-FM Global Shipyard Co Ltd for the proposed acquisition, reports 'The Sun Daily'. The other shareholders in YKP-FM are Thai investors, with a combined stake of 70%, and another Malaysian investor who owns the remaining 5% stake. YKP-FM's core business is the development and operation of a shipyard, which will focus on the repair and maintenance of vessels such as tugboats, barges and other types of boats.

Vietnam Shipyard Contract for Japan

Oshima Shipbuilding Group of Japan to construct Vietnam shipyard facility Japanese Oshima Shipbuilding Group will construct a US$180 million shipyard in the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa , according to Nguyen Chien Thang, Chairman of the Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee. The project will occupy a total area of 304 ha of Cam Thinh Dong Commune in Cam Ranh Town . Using the latest technology, the shipyard will build 24 different types of cargo vessels with capacities between 38,000 – 56,000 DWT. Currently, Oshima cooperates with Nha Trang University in training local personnel as well as through sending apprentices to Japan.

GL Opens Two More Offices in Vietnam

In recent years, Vietnam has emerged as an important producer of oil and natural gas in Southeast Asia. Despite the current economic crisis, the country continues boosting its activities in the energy industry. Accordingly, global technical assurance and consulting company Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has reinforced its local presence by opening two new offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Danang. Germanischer Lloyd Industrial Services have been operating in Vietnam since 1996. At first only a Representative Office with four people, GL today employs a team of almost 30 based in the country office in Vung Tau, in Hanoi and the new offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Danang.

Blue Marlin Serves as Floating Drydock for SemiSub

The first job of the recently jumboized heavy transport vessel Blue Marlin is the transport of the the Dai Hung I semi-submersible production platform of VietsovPetro from an offshore location to Hyundai-Vinashin's yard in Nha Trang, Vietnam, where the Blue Marlin will serve as a dry-dock facility. Dockwise was awarded the contract by Hyundai-Vinashin of Nha Trang in Vietnam for the transport and dry-docking of the 13,200 tons semi-submersible production platform Dai Hung I, as no local dry-docking facilities were available.

Blue Marlin is Back in Business

After undergoing a major conversion at South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD), the world’s largest semi-submersible heavy lift vessel, Blue Marlin, has entered service. Owned jointly by Norway’s Jan-Erik Dyvi AS and Holland’s Dockwise Shipping and managed by Glasgow’s Anglo-Eastern, the 76,061 dwt vessel was built in 2000 by Taiwan’s China Shipbuilding Corp in Kaohsiung. Conversion work in Korea saw the vessel lengthened by 6m as well as having her breadth increased by over 21 m to 63 m to provide an unobstructed cargo deck area of 11,227 m². The conversion of Blue Marlin has been undertaken to allow the vessel to transport some of the world’s largest floating oil platforms and drilling platforms, as well as semi-submersibles.

PetroVietnam to Sign Oil Exploration Contract

PetroVietnam is to sign an oil exploration contract with US Pogo and Canada’s Keeper Resources on block 124 offshore of central Vietnam. Block 124 is located in Phu Khanh Basin covering a 6.007 sq.km area along the country’s central coastal line, 50km northeast of Nha Trang City. The exploration block was offered for international tender by PetroVietnam in October 2004. Under the seven-year-term contract, the foreign contractors committed to conduct 3D seismic exploration on an 850 sq.km area and drill two exploration wells in the first three years of exploration. PetroVietnam is entitled to 20 percent equity participation when oil or gas is discovered under the contract, in which US Pogo is the main operator.
