Maersk Line, the world's largest shipping company, announced the expansion of its product portfolio between Europe's Mediterranean region and Canada to cater for the growing demands of importers and exporters on both sides of the Atlantic. The exclusive, fully Maersk Line-operated weekly service will be a five-vessel rotation stopping in Salerno and La Spezia (Italy), Fos-sur-Mer (France), Algeciras (Spain), Montreal and Halifax (Canada), and Valencia (Spain). Other Mediterranean markets will also be conveniently connected to the new service thanks to our integrated transhipment services in Algeciras and Valencia, with consistent products to/from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

At 104.9 million tons, total seaborne cargo throughput for the first three quarters of 2016, covering general and bulk cargo segments, was up 0.3 percent on the previous year. “Seaborne cargo throughput in the Port of Hamburg has stabilized and for the first three quarters of 2016 again increased. First-half seaborne cargo throughput of 70.2 million tons reflected stabilization of the trend for the Port of Hamburg. At the same time, a steep increase occurred in freight transport by rail to/from the Port of Hamburg. At 70.2 million tons, in the first half total seaborne cargo throughput, which includes the general and bulk cargo segments, was slightly – 0.9 percent – down on the previous year. In the first six months of 2016 containerized cargo handling totalled 4.5 million TEU – 20-ft standard containers – corresponding to a downturn of 1.2 percent.

The Port of Hamburg achieved its best-ever result in 2014, reporting total throughput of 145.7 million tons, representing growth of 4.8 percent. Up by 6.1 percent at 102.7 million tons, general cargo throughput was outstanding. A 1.7 percent increase in bulk cargo throughput to 43 million tons also contributed to the new record for Germany’s largest universal port. In 2014 the Port of Hamburg set a new record for seaborne cargo handling. Never before had such cargo volumes been loaded and discharged in the Port of Hamburg.

During the past five years, trade between Indonesia and the rest of Asia has mushroomed, particularly when compared to trade with North America and Europe (see the graph shown here). How much of this is due to proximity, or Indonesian goods being re-labelled by another Asian country, is beyond the scope of this analysis, but the lack of deep-sea services to the main consumer markets of Europe and North America must play a part, considers the analysis. Although Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous nation and South East Asia’s largest economy, ocean carriers currently offer no direct mainline services to either Europe or the US due to port capacity shortages.

In 2013 the Port of Hamburg achieved total throughput of 139 million tons. That represents growth of 6.2 percent. Both general cargo handling totalling 96.8 million tons (+ 5.7 percent) and bulk cargo handling at 42.3 million tons (+ 7.2 percent), ensured above-average growth for Germany’s largest universal port. “The Port of Hamburg‘s throughput trend is a fine signal for Hamburg and the entire Metropolitan Region. At 32.8 million tons, total seaborne cargo throughput for the first three months of 2013 put the Port of Hamburg back on a growth course. The trend in bulk cargo handling, especially, fuelled the increase in seaborne cargo handling: In the first quarter of the year a total of 10.1 million tons of bulk cargoes were handled in Hamburg, corresponding to an increase of 6.3 percent. At 2.2 million TEU (20-ft standard containers), the container handling that dominates in Hamburg as a universal port reached almost the same level as in the first quarter of 2012.

In a release, the company said the last Andean vessel from Latin America to North Europe would be the Marianne Schulte, which is set to leave Chilean port San Antonio on May 20 and Peruvian port Callao on May 23. The last direct service Andean-bound vessel from North Europe will be the Thekla Schulte, set to leave the Dutch port of Rotterdam on May 23, Tilbury in the U.K. on May 24, the German port of Hamburg on May 26 and Antwerp, Belgium on May 28. Maersk said Peru and Chile would continue to be served with vessels via Balboa, Panama, while a direct service from the Colombian port of Santa Marta will continue with an improved transit time of 12 days through the existing network.

Maersk Line announced service enhancements between North America and the East Mediterranean area. The company says the enhancements will enable them to meet customers' requirements for schedule reliability and fast transit times.
